Elliot quit because he had reported having 6 shootings that have killed people in his career. The last was the armed girl he shot dead. The nypd were investigating him to see if he should continue, they stated that he had to attend anger management and other physco testing. He felt the pressure and didnt want to deal with all that the police were throwing at him and quit.

@MrSmooth62 Elliot actually retired. That's what Cragen meant when he said Elliot put his papers in. A cop in NYC can retire after 20 years. Elliot had that amount of time. In fact, all of the veteran SVU detectives can retire anytime they want, except Olivia.

I can't watch it anymore. I loved Elliot and Olivia together too much to bear his loss :( And Olivia never shares her emotions with anyone or even to her audience, and to see her crying like this ... it made me cry, too. It's so real.

Sure, it make sense for the character, but it just doesn't ring true for a cop. If she needs to take five, she shouldn't make any call wait, but just take the time she needs on her own.

The writers could have just left out the call, and it wouldn't have made any difference to the story, while helping the show stay the course on police procedure and credibility.

@chloelovesSVU i am almost posititve that sadness went beyond the story in the show, it went beyond the acting because i'll tell you this much...i would cry too if chris meloni's fine ass up and left me!! i would be sooo hurt i would cry on and off the set!! because even though it is a great crime drama, it would feel so real and that we were really partners and cleaning up the streets togther...as best friends. :( can you imagine the heartache mariska must be feeling right now!! i feel it :(

Yes, he had his reasons, and they're justified, but leaving straight like that, with no closure, that was just pure childishness on his part. He's not indispensable, no character is. I think the fact that Mariska was asking for a lesser workload and getting more money on top of that was the last straw for Meloni. I'm really sad that he is gone because Stabler and Benson together were the face of SVU. It'll be hard for the show to carry on without him but I hope people will give it a chance.

Elliot was my favorite character but without him it just won't be the same I don't suppose he'd be interested in making a guest appearance later in the season I guess we can hope.

@oliverjumelle : Correct, he accidently fatally shoots her although I don't think he intended to hit her fatally just tried to shoot the gun out of her hand. I think he decided to quit to save the unit from further disgrace -Liv really loved him and I think it was mutual - they should of bonked the hell out of each other and had done with it, it was so obvious they fancied each other.
