  • It's obvious to see why some people are race car drivers, and some aren't. David Purley's body and mind were racing as fast as possible to put that fire out and save his friend, while everyone else just kinda stood around scratching their heads, waiting for a green light.

  • Thank you that you uploaded this I looked for something like this for years. It is a great video and great music. Well done :)

  • Perhaps the greatest moment of heroism in sports, David Purley. Certainly the greatest one that failed.

  • where is jim clark? one of the best ever!

  • @emirler86 While Jim Clark was indeed one of the best drivers of all time, his death wasn't an "F1 Fatal Crash"; he perished in a Formula Two accident.

  • Good music choice

  • Pussy track marshels are pussy's

  • It's fair to say, that Colin Chapman was to blame for a lot of fatal accidents,

  • Nothing in the film about Jim Clark, He was a formular1 driver Although he was killed taking part in a forular2 race, it was the norm in the sixties for a F1 driver to drive in other classes of motor sport

  • guys why are all comments about Roger Williamson? no disrespect.

you guys should talk about other people like this person below

  • @TheWatchme14 this video is the first part of second for all died f1 drivers, not only for roger williamson.its very sad,i know maybe he can live now when the marshals would have helped him.

  • @TheFelix1703 I would put it as "would have been able to help him" because they would be equipped for dealing with cars ablaze with burning petrol.

  • @fluffymole0913 thanks my english is not so good

  • @TheFelix1703 I think it's good, it's just the way you phrased that sentence made it seem like the marshalls didn't want to help him.

  • 2:35 Jo Schlesser...

  • I'm so glad we have carbon fiber these days and cars don't burn like they do in those days anymore. Must have been a horrible feeling for that driver who tried to help but had to walk away from the burning wreck. =(

  • @AstonDBS9 Williamson was in his 2nd gp not third bro. Debuted at British GP, then this happened.

  • Roger Williamson was in his 3rd Grand Prix and he died from suffocation (asphyxiation). David Purley, arguably motorsports joint hero, alongside the great Jackie Stewert. But why were the Marshalls so poorly trained, why would the marshalls not have fire retardent clothing or fire extinguishers. Why would a circuit recently rebuilt claim the life of a budding young driver.

A young driver slipped though the soft center and fell off. The good die young. RIP Roger Williamson

  • @dortmundfan13 he died in formula 2

  • many people have died in the quest for speed R.I.P

  • 5:10 was really sad... David I take my hat off for you!

  • Seriously cried watching Purley trying to save that guy himself and just how bad he looked afterwards, just awful.

  • @undertheinfluence789 don't put a comment like that on a video like this you sick bastard D:-

  • @epicness856 .............funny sick basterd!

  • @undertheinfluence789 *bastard

  • @epicness856 I dont blame you for being a dick. No, I blame your parents. And the day you find out who they are you should tell them they a pair of cunts for leaving you in a wheely bin outside the hospital when you were a baby....

  • 6:00 D:

  • god, the ones that died on impact where lucky. imagen beeing stuck in a burning car... nightmare stuff. also must have been horrible for the other drivers that had to pass such a horrific sight

  • DAVID PURLEY IS THE NAME OF THE OTHER PILOT

  • spain fancorchamps is a killer

  • @Slouchbeanie it wasnt the people's fault blame the stewards or the officials they didnt let them while the people kept trying to go on

  • 6:15...dam.

  • id burn my fucken hands to save somones life damn right

  • David Charles Purley is a Great Man...

Дэвид Пэрли - Настоящий Мужик с большой буквы М... Маршалы в том гран-при - стадо оленей.

  • @alxuvrv you´re so right man. he tried everything to rescue williamson but he failed. it´s so sad.

  • The driver trying to overturn the car did his best. I take my hat off to anybody that tries to overturn a hunk of heavy metal with flames pouring out of it

  • 6:44 that racer was a good freind to try o save him those bastards r greesy for the race at least help the poor fucking guy who is going to get kileed MAN rip

  • the sad part about the guy who died at 5:10 also died in a crash but a plane crash only age 40

  • 5:00 now thats a real man there, you dont get that these days, who is he may i ask?

  • @gt4driftster David Purley

He later dies in a plane crash

  • @gt4driftster That's true. Can anytone tell me who is this man trying to save human's life?

The rest of these ,,Helpers" should be killed in burning car, if they were scared to help...

  • @wdowa94 It is David Purley, the driver who drove behind Williamson

  • @zumholli I knew that already. Now he is my real hero

  • @gt4driftster david purley

  • @gt4driftster Honestly, I'm a 20 year old guy and watching him and that crash brought a tear to my eye. Fuck.

  • R.I.P ALL -_-

  • who was the driver who was trying to help? at 5:10

  • @blackness010 David Purley

  • 5:10 the saddest thing ive ever seen, hes such an amazing friend, God bless.. R.I.P roger Williamson

  • R.I.P. 05.10 was the sadest one.

  • at 5:10 is really sad because the other driver is the only one trying to help

  • i saw just thinking to myself, if i saw a fellow driver on the track spew out of control and burst into flames, id pull right over, get out and run to see if everything is okay. then i got to 5:10

  • i dont get jochen rindt's crash seriously did he hit his head?

  • @chikozo1 His harness wasn't on properly.

  • 5:10 Roger Williamson and David Pearley, who was trying to rescue him. Sad :( David was the real strong man, he died later in airplane crash...

  • @Primus525 SAD:(

  • Guys, their safely rescue was so poorly until around mid 70. One person have a fire extinguisher, that is not enough to put out of the flame. Clark have fireproof suit on so he wont get burn for short time trying to save Williamson. Other two guys do not have any protection from flame, they cant touch burn race car or they get burn themself. They can't do anything. They got local fire truck came to put out the flame. Once they learned the history of poor safely recuse, the better they become.

  • on the last part, the fuck they still on yellow flag. it should be red flag.

  • why those other people dont bother to try and help david purley save williamson is beyond me, he could have been saved if they had done something, and why do none of the other drivers stop

  • At 5:10 the other driver was the only one trying to save Robert Williamson

  • Fuck the race if i see somebody burning in a car i'll get out off car and try 2 save the person

  • the saddest thing about Williamson death is that he had almost no injury and was still conscious in his car, shouting at Purley to help him go out of the car. the marshals were idiots and not equipped and when some spectators tried to come help, they pushed them back with the help of dogs. in fact they thought that it was Purley's car that was accidented and that noone else was implicated (check the wiki of the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix for more infos : HORRIBLE !)

  • sadly in these years of f1 they didnt care that much about safety

  • david purley is a hero indeed but marshalls shouldnt be blamed for not helping....cause rogers car is to hot for them to touch while david got fire-safe gloves and suite on him... tho i think marshalls at that time should know better and have more water around to put these fires down...cause at that time it happened to many times if u ask me.

  • That last video is probably the most horrific thing I have ever watched );

  • @LangelStreetKillers they couldnt do anything they wernt in fire suits

  • @MrRagingbovine if they have really wanted to help they wouldnt care about heat... they could've protect their hands by wrapping their coats around them or something ffs and help pushing the car

  • 5:10 i was crying after seein his reaction that he couldnt save his friend anymore. Its so hard to find people like that, people who would give up a trophy, money, or fame to save his friend, even thought he probably knows there is no hope no more.

  • 5:10 it makes me mad to see how all the people standing there didn't try to save him

  • @TheDaMirell the fans tried to race on the track but the marshalls blocked them with dogs

  • @TheDaMirell They were poorly equipped and not well trained.

  • @soren1314 but you can't stay there and watch while a man is burnin' in a car

  • @TheDaMirell true...true.....you can at least f*cking try.

  • 5:10 I love that man who risked his life to save another..

  • @LangelStreetKillers i'm pretty sure that guy got awarded for bravery. It is sad that the other people did nothing but i think it was to late. In my honest opinion i think he died before the car came to a stop. If you look the car is going at high speed while up side down therefore it would have been highly likely he died while the car was mooving.

  • @landorcolts He didn't. The crash itself didn't kill him. He died of asphyxiation. Officials, and the other drivers as well, assumed it was Purleys car that was crashed, and that he escaped unharmed. David Purley indeed got awarded, with a George Medal.

  • @BigBeakedCrow woah, that driver must have been made out of steel to survive that crash! David purley must have been so angry with those mindless stuards, he was the only one making a real effort to save him. He got what he deserved with his award!

  • @landorcolts I've read somewhere he didn't really blame the marshals, since they were not wearing flame protection overalls. A mistake of the organization, not the marshalls themselves. Nevertheless they can be blamed for not reacting quick with the fire extinguisher (the single one in the area).

  • zandvoort was a death trap!!

  • @dukeofstradone it was, but it paled in comparison to the Nurburgring's (The Green Hell) driver death count of 73, that track fucking ate people

  • No disrespect to these drivers but why isn't Jim Clark in this

  • @dortmundfan13 He died in a Formula 2 race.

  • @BigBeakedCrow ah i see thanks for clearing that up mate :)

  • i bet if a chrash like that happend today no body would stop to help doesnt mater how good the emergency crew is i would stop if i would see my friend burnin Purley is a real hero and those people that just stud there are real fucking assholes

  • @LangelStreetKillers i know man, that was David Purley, a real hero. It was only Williamson's second race.. so sad

  • Ricardo Rodriguez died in Mexico City, not Monza

  • I can't watch the Williamson crash any more. I just get so goddamn angry.

  • While I won't blame the marshals for Williamson's death, I will blame the governing bodies of the track for not being properly prepared for a situation such as this. 8 minutes before emergency crews arrived!! That shouldn't have been acceptable even back then.

  • btw when a car is burning with a fucking person in it I think they should everybody know even the riders to stop driving so people can safely travvel the road to help him..

  • 5:10 if everybody helped with pushing the car over they maybe had some buring on there hands but maybe nobody was killed..wich is still much worse that a burned hand...

  • 5:10 I'd sue those retards for a murder... he could be saved with a bit of luck...

  • @Killkec apparently Clark (The driver) could hear Williamson screaming, so ya, if they did so much as help instead of scratching their balls he would have possibly lived.

  • @Killkec no.....they were not well equipped, so yes, he could have been saved. No, on lawsuit......besides....he died of asphyxiation, not the fire.

  • @Killkec @TheDaMirell You wanna try lifting up a hunk of metal burning at 800'c with your bare hands, be my guest. Purley (the other driver) was the only one there with fire-resistant clothing and he still got badly burned for his efforts. Blame the sport, blame the organizers, don't blame bystanders who had no means to help a dying man. I'm sure hearing the screams of someone burning to death right next to them still haunts them to this day without your armchair judgmental bullshit.

  • @VoidSkipper at least fucking try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! god damn have a little of bit confidence

  • @1001samurais1 I sincerely hope you're never in their situation. Your lack of rationality is likely to cause further injuries or death.

  • @VoidSkipper Maybe so but those other drivers speeding through the scene are to be frank, bloody shameful, they all had fire retardant clothing as well.

    Hideous situation though.

  • @bsharo That, I agree with. It was a terrifying culture at the time that drivers would just drive straight past flaming wrecks.

That said, they interviewed some of the drivers afterwards and apparently most of them had actually thought that Purley was the driver of the burning car, and that he'd safely gotten out and was trying to extinguish -his own- machine.

  • @VoidSkipper

Yeargh, now ya know why that old shithead is roastin' in HELL... : P

If you had been honest to people and treated others fairly, then at least you'd been able to sleep well at night knowin' that you didn't do anythin' wrong to nobody.

But that shure wasn't the case with Steve Jobs tho, so he paid the ULTIMATE PRICE by losin' his LIFE and EVERYTHING ELSE he had!

I just wonder how's he gonna spend all that 100+ billion he ripped offa poor innocent folks while he's six feet under?

  • @VoidSkipper TRUE, own safety first.

  • @VoidSkipper I could understand why those around the car couldn't help. What angered me was the other drivers driving past, scared to get a few burns and not help a man burning to death in his car? Purley was the only one who seemed to care for another drivers life.

  • @parappa2008 I've said it already, the reason the other drivers didn't get out to help is because they all thought Purley /was/ the driver of the burning car, and that he was already safely out and attempting to extinguish it.

  • @VoidSkipper These fuckers are driving so fast they don’t even care about their own life do you think they are going to care about someone else’s.

  • @VoidSkipper you all miss the point so well, these drivers died as a direct result of a sport that did not evolve, watch the BBC documentary " Gran Prix, The Killer Years " for a better understanding of what you are trying to talk about,

  • @VoidSkipper great man.he died later in a plane accident.

  • @Killkec how could they ever saved him

  • @Killkec so you see somethin like this and think someone shouldve profited by suing someone? you are why the world sucks mate. Accidents happen and what ifs dont change the outcome. give the guy the respect he deserves and leave the judgement to God

  • @CraigBryce2010

dude... go kill ur self and make a place for a smarter person on this planet ;) so... youd take it peacfully if for a example ur father had a car crash and his car would get on fire and u'd be the only one trying to save him and there would be 4 more ppl just standing and watching? idiot... judgement of God?... yeah God will help us all... making retards like this ...

  • @Killkec

also read : he didn't die cuz of crash... fire killed him... he burned alive... al he got from the crash was broken arm... you get it now?

  • @Killkec wow is all I can say about you mate. so you would have rather 2 more innocent people Burned badly or killed than just one and you say im retarded hehe. Look at it logically not emotionally mate. Also if my father was in a fiery crash I'd cheer, shows how much you know.

  • @Killkec Disrespectful twat.

  • Not being able to help his friend took the racing right out of him. It is hard to find racers that look out for other racers, it would have been an honor to have raced with him.

  • @skatezooyork24 but the car was on fire and they have no fireproof overalls! I don't think I would go near that fire with no protection

  • @CON72 in a way, that's worse :(.

  • whats name have this song??

  • @allgameproplayer clubbed to death i think

  • @patrick2012X

4:40 crying every time ;( Why doens't help the marshals ?

only the driver he must be the best f1 driver in history he helped his mate who was it?

was it the only time that one driver helpes another driver?

  • You cannot compare the F1 in this video to the F1 we know now, they are totally different from one another. But similarly, we wouldn't have the F1 we have now without the hstory we have seen here. Think how many horrible accidents we have seen in just the last few years, Massa, Kovalainen, Webber, Kubica, Perez, Rosberg....without the past, the history and people like Jackie Stewart standing up for change, these modern day drivers wouldn't walk away, wouldn't survive the crashes they've had

  • Please, do not blame the marshalls for Williamson's death, they could only do what they were equipped to do, and they only had the equipment that the sport felt was needed at that time. They had no fireproof overalls, no real firefighting equipment, nothing. Jackie Stewart spoke up, said he wanted to make the sport safer....he was branded a chicken....in this era F1 didnt care about safety, drivers had a higher chance of dying than they did of retiring. Sad, but true

  • @jaaames8 they could at least rolled over the car to give him a chance but no go ahead and walk away.

  • @skatezooyork24 htf can you say that! if its a choice of saving a friend or getting burnt wtf would you go for!!! i life of guilt or being a savior. :(

  • seeing how a stuck driver is burning and others can't do anything about...it's really tough to watch..

  • Zandvoort has 2 fatal fires

  • outs 4:26

  • David tried in vain. Imagine how he must have felt knowing he could do nothing!

  • For all those critizing the marshalls, you have to remember this was a different time and a different era. Compare the response with the Roland Ratzinger (RIP) crash. Within seconds of Roland crashing, fire marshalls in kevlar suits with fire extinguishers arrive on seen just as the car stopped spinning. As much as I hate Bernie and all his bullshit, safety has come out of the dark ages.

  • they didn't have any protective clothing on bro, only the other driver did. the heat produced from the burning fuel and materials used to build the cars back then would have been so intense it would melt steel.

  • look at those stupid marshalls ... that guy is burning to death and they are just standing around watching how david wants to save williamson ... they should've helped david instead of doing nothing .

  • what is the name of this song??? cool vid.

  • the worst crash was roger williamson and villeneuve :[

  • Fucking Marshals Are Always Too Lazy To Help

  • 4:40 made me so sad, Im glad to have met Jackie Stewert's and got his autograph because that man is a legend, not for being an amazing f1 driver but because hes the only person ive ever seen stop his car when another man has crashed his.

    R.I.P Roger Williamson

  • perfsad music

  • Let's All Thank Formula 1 That the Safety Now-a-Days are Much Safer Than in the Early Years. Unfortantly Some Couldn't Be Saved

  • Remember the marshals and spectators who have also lost their lives.

  • 6.50 Why yellow flag? It had to be red to stop the race!

  • Comment removed

  • Bandini's death was just as tragic. The marshals could have put out the fire in time if not for the media sharks in the helicopter flying overhead to get the shots....the marshals continually tried to wave the helicopter away, but they continued hovering above the wreckage, the rotor wash continually feeding the flames and making the fire more intense and impossible to put out, to get their "shots".

  • 2:30 seeing scheleeser's body being dragged away was sickning

  • On the Roger Williamsson is death its look to me like the marshalls don't care if he die.

  • In the Roger Williamson crash, its like the fire-fighters had to come from the local town!... Very Sad

  • @DuploRabbit Its not that they didn't care, back then track marshals were voluntary and given no training. If you were put in a situation where you had to step into an inferno to lift a car while wearing no protective clothing, could you do it? Because I don;t think I could.

  • @C0N72 What the Hell are you talking about!!! I was pointing out that it took forever for fire personnel to arrive I wasn't knocking what the marshals were trying to do!

  • this song goes well with this video but it's name is terrible O_O

  • Roger Williamson's crash shows how bad trained was the Marshall in the old F1. They were looking while Purley was trying to help him.

  • He didn't even died burned,he was asphyixiated.

  • man fire sucks. Id rather go headlong into a wall at full song than burn. RIP my crispy comrades I am deeply saddened to see so many drivers perished in fires. people tend to take fuel cells and contemporary safety for granted till you learn how prevalent fire really was back in the day.

  • omg is that the body they're dragging? 2:34

  • @ruudparklimy yes...

  • I hate when my curiosity gets the best of me

  • At 2:11 Schlesser drove for Honda in 1968. The team had an experimental F1 car which was tested by John Surtees. He said it was not fit for racing, and a potential deathtrap. Undaunted, Honda entered it for the French Grand Prix. Being the local hero, Schlesser drove it.

After two laps, the car slid wide and crashed. The magnesium-bodied Honda and 58 laps worth of fuel ignited instantly, burning so intensely that marshals could not extinguish the fire, leaving Schlesser no chance of survival.

  • Dave Purely received th eGeorge Medal for trying to save Roger in this accident a true hero tring to save his best friend

  • what am I seeing in 0:10 is that fire from a car or trees? please comment at pokemon56761

  • a bit of death never hurt anyone! i think they should make a circuit in a figure of 8!

  • @undertheinfluence789 AND I THINK YOU SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP AND SHOW SOME RESPECT TO DEAD PEOPLE, BITCH!!

  • Comment removed

  • @lanpingpug my family arent stupid enough to get in cars that could possibly burn. unlike your family who are partially retarded. i say partially coz you probably recieved all the retarted genes! in a word - your family are retarted!
