The Temptations were still a great group after they lost key members in my opinion. They made more great songs beyond "Treat Her Like a Lady" and "Lady Soul."
@ Dienglee. No REAL fans of the Temptations denies the talents of other non-classic 5 members of the group. Richard Street, Glenn Leornard, Ali Woodson (RIP), Ron Tyson, and many others are talented in their own right and they are respected by REAL fans of the group.
I love the Temptations. I have ALL their recordings, including those with El Bryant & from when they were dubbed the Pirates. On lots of those recordings, they sounded terrible compared to later years. Ruffin struggled at first which is why Smokey refused to release any of his recordings for his 1st year with the Tempts. He sounded badly in some later performances too. Don't deify them just because they were the originals. All Tempts members were outstanding singers, originals & otherwise.
These guys sound very good to me. All you vocal critics, shut the fuck up. What do you know about singing? Just because the "Classic Five" were the "original" Temptations doesn't mean that no one else can sing. They very often sounded badly during live performances & messed up during dance routines. You guys won't talk about that though, because they were the "Classic 5". Well, the Classic 5 included alcoholics, drug addicts, & selfish egomaniacs (and all this describes David Ruffin alone).
@dienglee It's no secret that David, Paul, Eddie, and Dennis have had some substance and professional problems in their careers. They weren't perfect nor did they ever claim to be. However, it shouldn't give anyone the right to talk down on these guys. Many performers had battled the same issues but people are far more forgiving towards them but far more harsh and less forgiving towards Paul, Eddie, Dennis, and especially David
They are good, and Damon was not at fault,he did his job up untill he left the group.Damon sang his part well and so did Richard Street.I respect them all!
@realality58 We done talent shows with Danon Harris and he was a a danm good singer but he needed some work in his ME ME ME department .From B-More MD a place called Turners, Station. MOZART BROWN
@mozartbrown Hey Mozart what's up? I don't doubt what you are saying man. Berry Gordy was not too fond of that characteristic either and that is why he had to leave the Tempts. Hey, did you also know Billy Griffin from back in the day?
I respect the elder soul artists' work, and am a Motown fanatic. Motown helped shape the post-segragation popular culture, and also were precursors of a genre which today is somewhat the norm : choreography and costume-sustained pop-music. But this video also shows clearly how Motown was more revolutionary in extra-musical content than profoundly musically-oriented. I can't count the number of times I noted mistakes either from the vocalists, the Funk Brothers, or the editors and mixers.
Which gives Motown a certain pleasant, if imperfect, natural touch. BUT... Geez the guys were SERIOUSLY off-key in their a-capella segment, here. Starting around 0:50, you can just hear them sliding a semi-tone too flat before the music shuts. When it comes back, the guys are comPLETEly off, and I'm sorry to say: this time, it ain't cute like when Diana Ross is strugling to modulate at the end of "I Hear a Symphony"... The Temps REALLY dropped the ball in this video. Sorry fellas, but:*BARFING*!
UGGGHH... Same thing at around 2:20... When the music stops, the guys are surprisingly on another tonal planet, which hits like an uppercut when the music comes back... Gravol please!! lol
Nah man... They didn't rehearse for shit. A little less funny gestures, a LOT more vocal training, please.
And it's very much Damon Harris' fault! He sure was NO Eddie Kendricks!! LOLLLL Don't take the job of falsetto if your ass can't carry the soprano voice properly!!!
This group is just as strong as any from the period they where in they weren,t competing on the charts with the Tempts before them they where competing against the Delphonics, Dells, Spinners, and others. As long as they had Dennis and Richard and Damon on the leads with Melvin and Otis keeping the background sound tight they could hang with anybody. They could hang on

A very good version of the tempts. But personally NOTHING nor NO ONE can compare to the original Temptations. They fit together perfectly. Their voices were made for each other. Long live The Tempts, the greatest collection of musical talent this world has ever seen.
