Great, Great song you can feel what slaves or depressed people would be looking forward to a better place were all are equal in Gods eye. Love to all man kind.
could some one post a lost song by sam cooke, name NEVER/ COME RUNNING BACK TO YOU,this song is the answer to bill cook song i'll come running back to you
This is a Spiritual. Spirituals began in the 1600’s and began to really blossom in the 1800’s often containing coded references to the Underground Railroad, sometimes passing on news or information, and always as a way to resist enslavement. By the time of Emancipation new ones were no longer being created. However, by then, over 6,000 spirituals had been collected.
@TamarZucker Hahahaha...The Lord is not of this world. A song about stealing away and ain't got long to stay here is talking about going to a Heavenly home and is not referring to any underground railroad. This Earth is temporary and will pass...the soul is eternal and you'll either spend it in hell or Heaven. You talk a big game, but it is just talk...no facts involved. Of course to understand the meaning, you have to be in touch with Christ. Acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.
@LT1HILLINGHOE I disagree. I don't believe in an afterlife, I believe what we have here on our planet is all that we have, we need to make the most of our lives, and spend them on helping others and ourselves to be the best we can be, without the threat of burning in flames after our death.
@TicTacJoe134 OK...that just means that you're wrong and unless you meet Jesus before you pass, you will feel those flames. You not believing in God doesn't make it not real. It just means you'll be on the wrong side of eternity and will perish in flames forever.
@LT1HILLINGHOE, Sorry but @TamarZucker is right. Spirituals had double meanings in slave times. This along with "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and many other songs were often sang as signs for escape. This way slaves could get away with communicating in plain sight of overseers who didn't know any better. The Lord works in mysterious ways and always has. Be blessed!
@LT1HILLINGHOE I love your dual display of warped Christianity and ignorance. No wonder people look at us Christian folk so funny...people like you got met them first!
@CoCoYvette Skipster, do you think I care about your lame insults?? There's no need to get your feelings hurt and start blabbing on things you know nothing about because you're wrong. Just grin and move on. You'll be wrong again, so get used to it. Do you think your insults actually change anything?? LOL @ "people like you got met them first". I gotta wriite that one down and make sure it gets in the "Sentences That Make No Sense" book. Have a nice life, Skipster. You hear?
yes , this lady with high pitch notes was also very gifted.. listen to those wonderful notess... ohh GOD what happened nowadays people sing with `auto tunes
@mbuguaki the people who need auto tune are not singers. They are not artists, they are artisans; they provide a product. Artists move the soul. Artisans provide footstools, shirts, bath salts... useable stuff. Artists like Mr. Cooke move us beyond mere survival. They make life the very delicious LIVING.

Sam Cooke's death has never been adequately explained - shot to death in the nude with one shoe on. What a tragegdy ! Check out his gospel songs with the soul strippers.
God bless you Mr Sam Cooke....we love you always....we miss you...we Thank God for the time he gave you here with us. Thank you for your music, style, love, and class. may God give you peace in your rest forever.
Beautiful and best version I've ever heard. Sam, the soprano and the bass singers who come at the very end just makes this a winner. Heck, everybody on this recording gets the job done very very nicely.
i remember buying this same album in australia and it was the first record I ever bought when i got my 1st job at 18 yo. If a song could get yu close to Heaven it would be his, as they guided me thru difficult times as it is not easy being a Greek woman with 2 homelands but Heaven is the ultimate destination
I love this song. I sang it in my Vocal Jazz class at school. It was a three part song for the girls in the group. This is a really cool song version though.
Thank you so much for touching down my page and for your compliment and encouragement. I've enjoyed, and been influenced by both your father and Sam for many years. There are none better.
I just LOVE the soprano 0.51 and 1.28 just amazing
gosh I love those background choirs from RCA and ABC records from the later 50's and 60's they sounded so full controlled and had amazing harmonies plus the great lead vocals of sam :)
@Individuell83 that soprano was probably an angel dropping in on the session! this song is amazing. makes me feel like crying knowing that sam died not long after the recording!
that's true most of these wonderful people die too young sam cooke, marvin gaye, florence ballard, tammi terrell, eva cassidy, billie holiday and many more... maybe god decided to get him to a better place which was heaven :)
One of our greatest "classic soul" singers is missed! His legacy lives forever. Thinking of him today, December 11th, the date of his departure. It's an honor to pay tribute to a brilliant entertainter. He was and his my inspiration. Vel Omarr
Does anyone have this mp3? is so please send it to me. I love this song. I was in the beauty supply store the other day and they were playing it and immediately tears filled my eyes. I ran to the counter and asked the clerk who sang it, but she was Oriental and didn't know. I must have this song. It speaks to me in so many ways.
@KrfNYC2 Marvin was good. But he couldn't touch Sam, vocally. Or David Ruffin of the Temptations for that matter. Even Marvin admitted he lacked certain things David had in his voice.
@JayGatz01 He said he lacked certain things, but that doesn't mean that he admitted that David Ruffin was better overall. I disagree about Sam. I think that Marvin was head and shoulders above the rest, and still is. I think we can at least agree that Marvin had the cabability to hit a far wider range of notes.
@KrfNYC2 Ruffin was a master at interpreting the emotions of a song. Marvin was great. But he was no David Ruffin. David's personal problems really prevented him for realizing his full potential. And Sam Cooke had years of experience with the Soul Stirrers. He watered down his sound for the mainstream, white audience. Whereas Ruffin infused his vocals with the gospel sound, Cooke checked it at the door. Marvin is great, but those two were on another level.
@JayGatz01 We can't say wether or not this or that hindered a singers career. All we can do is speculate.(By the way, the common perception of Marvin Gayes personal life is that it was extremley troubled as well).I've heard Sams gospel. I still take Marvin. I think that a lot of people say Sam, David etc are better than Marvin because they haven't heard enough Marvin. You can't skim through his songs or else you may very well miss the greatnest within them. Wha have you heard from Marvin?
@KrfNYC2 Ruffin got on Berry Gordy's bad side. Wasn't good for his career. Gaye was married to Berry's sister. Diana Ross had a kid with Gordy. Their careers were enhanced.
@KrfNYC2 Listen to Sam Cooke's two live albums. He could do "mainstream" and "gut-bucket" soul equally. And you can hear the variety of voices Ruffin used throughout his career by listening to his early work with the Temptations and some of his solo stuff. Both (Ruffin and Cooke) were better singers and live performers. Marvin was the best writer of the three. And that's even debatable, as Cooke wrote almost all of the Soul Stirrers stuff and his own solo stuff!
@JayGatz01 Can we dismiss all of this personal info because we don't know anything unless we enter the hearts and minds of the people involved.I think many people say that Cooke is better because he would showcase his abilities from beggining to end on each song(mainly his gospel work). That wasn't the case with Marvin. On a lot of tracks he would sing gentley for three minutes and then hit you with all of the power notes and "whoos" and schreeches and gowls and a million different sounds.
@KrfNYC2 Cooke was a better singer. Sam Cooke was a businessman first and foremost. And his tracks were aimed at the mainstream audience, which would make him the most money. So he checked the "churchy" stuff at the studio door. He could shout with the best of them. Like I said, check his "Live at the Harlem Square Club" album. Marvin could never do those types of things with his voice. Frankly, he wasn't a confident singer. He even admitted that.
@KrfNYC2 And David Ruffin had a far greater range than Marvin. If you listen closely to the Temptations' harmonies, you can sometimes hear David right below Eddie Kendricks. And other times, he's right above Paul and Melvin. David was a better vocalist than Marvin and definitely a better live performer. At the end of the day, Marvin, David and Sam are three of the top five soul singers ever. They just were great at different things. Marvin was the best songwriter of the three.
@JayGatz01 Basically what I'm saying is that I suspect that people skim through Sam's music and hear the extent of his vocals. But when people skim through Marvin's songs they may not. They must just hear him serenading and humming and not bother to listen to the rest of his work which is heavily sprinkled with soul stirring notes of unspeakable variety. I sugest listneing to "Everybody Needs Love" IN IT'S ENTIRETY for starters.
@KrfNYC2 Like I said, I owned the Marvin Gaye box set and other albums long before I started amassing Sam Cooke and David Ruffin records. I know what Marvin can do, vocally. But David and Sam were just better singers. They'd gotten more seasoning on the gospel circuit, so they were also better live performers. Marvin was a very, very timid live performer. And unsure of himself. He was even jealous of Jermaine Jackson of all people! But Marvin was surely one of the top five soul singers.
@JayGatz01 Well, I think that one can own several Marvin Gaye albums and still miss some of his best vocal work...but anyway, we can agee to disagree. So maybe that's what we shall do.
@KrfNYC2 I don't see how that's possible! I own almost all of Marvin's work. I own all of Cooke's. And almost all of Ruffin's work with the Temtpations and as a solo artist. We can agree to disagree. But, at the end of the day, Marvin was the third best vocalist of the three. But definitely the best songwriter.
@JayGatz01 I go back to what I said earlier. With Marvin, you could listen to 3 min and 45 sec of a 4 min song and miss the 15 seconds in which he hits an array of incredible notes(which were sometimes scattered throughout a song, and at other times consolidated).Or you could listen to one song in which he didn't really felx his vocal prowless and not one in which he does to the full extent.Lastley, just because you own a certain amount of his work doesn't mean that you've listened to all of it.
@Euphoriax1 Thats so true many wonderful singers. Type in Mahalia Jackson by Marie Guillian she sounds just like Mahalia. Its so good when we have people who keep these all music going. Thats what feeds the soul. Please comment.
I just took a look on ebay and yes it's still on for 5 euro the album is called "only sixteen" I don't think it's a 60's pressing but an 80's pressing or so included songs are god bless the child which was originally by billie holiday, steal away, win your love for me, you send me, i love you most of all, all of my life and finally only sixteen itself but I'm sure theres more on it but I can't found it on google or anywhere else
In fact, it's rather blatant how he excises the "...to Jesus" and replaces it with one more "steal away". Also, "sinner man" becomes "poor man", but that's about it. All the other words are unchanged.
This isn't to criticise, of course. I really love Sam Cooke's version.

I been looking for this song for years and here it is. This song is not listed on any CD's of Sam Cooke which I'm surprised.
Harmonous background by those "soul" sisters.

I found it on german ebay about one week ago I'm not sure maybe it's still on ebay
it was for 5 euro an LP with a green cover but I didn't know the other stuff from it so I didn't buy it...

Does anyone know who is singing backup? Just curious. Lovely rendition.
My earliest memory of this song is watching my much-older cousin doing an interpretive dance to it for a university class!

i'm sure by now you realize this isn't an r and b song. this is an old gospel classic.

In fact, it's rather blatant how he excises the "...to Jesus" and replaces it with one more "steal away". Also, "sinner man" becomes "poor man", but that's about it. All the other words are unchanged.
This isn't to criticise, of course. I really love Sam Cooke's version.
