I'm Dutch and I love our anthem... guess it awakens my patriotism, but I think the Russian anthem is the most beautiful anthem of all..
For all of you foreigners who love our anthem... I wonder if you'd still like it so much if you had to listen to all 15 verses, like I had to when I was in school (unfortunately I had a teacher who had written a thesis and 8 books on the damn song, so he kinda ruined it for me for a long time)
Relax, we are both Germanic tribes fighting the Romans side by side, so being from Duitsen blood is something to be proud of on both sides of the Rijn...

The translation: William van Nassouwe Am I, of Dutch descent Loyal to the fatherland I will remain until I die A Prince of Orange Am I, free and fearless The King of Spain I have always honoured It's a tribute to Wilhelmus van Nassau, better known as "Willem van Oranje", a very important historical figure. Our royal family descends from him. Oranje = orange so that also explains our national colour ;) This is by the way the oldest national anthem in the world!
holland, belgium and luxemburgo was part of the spanish empire, holland until 1648, with the peace of westfalia and belgium until 1700, the holland was a great nation with a very strong soldiers, our great army, the ``tercios´´ was fighitin again the protestants of holland, and the general duke of alba was gobernator.
No, the music (not the words!) of the Japanese anthem is older, but the lyrics of the Dutch national anthem are really the oldest in the world. Look it up if you don't believe me ;)
het zou verboden moeten worden! Met alle respect voor de zangeres, maar het wilhelmus is nou eenmaal truttig en saai; verpoppen helpt niet en beledigt zelfs!

Duitsen is a very old word (this anthem is written in 1568) and means nothing in contemporary Dutch. Boyes1980 is right that 'Diets' also means people but not in this context. By the way, the English word 'Dutch' derives from 'Diets'. Despite what many people think, Duitsen has nothing to do with German. That's a big misconception.
not any essential differences? You fucking stupid?
Germany is a patchwork of former states.
The netherlands is in a better (historical) position to claim certain german regions along the border than germany claiming the netherlands
We've always been ashamed to be called German. That's why we've been on our own for so long. That's why we never wanted to be part of Germany. except our queen during WW1, but thank god for her staff.
In comparison there's no other country as successful as Holland, so small yet so dominant. Amsterdam was in the 17th century the center of the world, even New York used to be Nieuw Amsterdam. If the Netherlands were a province of Germany(only in your wildest dreams) it would instantly be the most powerful economic region.
You know the difference between a farmer and a peasant, right? Peasants you'll find all over Europe; Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain etc. ,in Holland however you'll only find farmers, you know, the people who provide us our food. No sympathy? Then what the hell are you doing here? And why do I feel your wet tongue up my ass? You want to be proud of something that you can't be proud off.
Ooops...logged in with the wrong account, tommyjob is me.
Austria? We ridicule Austrians even more then you Germans, search for Muntz + Austria on youtube. Watch both parts. Poor Austrians, thousands of Dutch are coming for you this summer and trash your silly country, LOL. We Dutch only look up(well just a little bit) to the British, the rest of Europe we consider inferior. Don't try to compare yourself with the arrogant Dutch, dipshit.
There are Germans in Germany, Denmark, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Luxemburg, Belgium and the Netherlands. They all belong to different states and that's ok. There's nothing - apart from your passport and the language you use in writing - that makes you more different to someone from Berlin than me, coming from the Cologne area. There are huge cultural differences.
cultural differences are making me different from the cologne and berlin areas, right?
Don't get me wrong, I don't favor borders very much; to many states, to little space.
I wouldn't mind a single nation european continent, like you said, we're not that different. But we are slightly different and therefore such a nation would be under European Flag and not under Germanic just because germans seem to live everywhere. Germs always do:)
Well, anyway, I will never feel as being abroad, when I'm in Holland or Austria. And as I said Eastern Germany is much more different to where I come from than the Netherlands.
But yeah ok, good suggestion, let's wait for next month. We'll have three teams: Germany, Holland and Austria. One of them might win...
At one point in history we decided that we were more über then you germans, that's what happened. We're way too cool for you germans, you can't party with us, we're way ahead of you retarted bradwursten.....pfffffff. Halve communisten met vervuild bloed van de polen. Oprotten!
Onze taal kan dan wel 1 van de dialecten zijn, ik dacht dat de gedachte dat wij dan ook maar gelijk tot de duitse stammen behoren er in 1945 redelijk was uitgeramd?
Dutch vocabulary is predominantly Germanic in origin, considerably more so than English. This is to a large part due to the heavy influence of Norman French on English, and to Dutch patterns of word formation, such as the tendency to form long and sometimes very complicated compound nouns, being more similar to those of German and the Scandinavian languages.
Jij is pronounced "Yei". In German there is only one way to say 'you', that is 'du'. The other words like der, die, das, dem, den etc. are articles. E.g. 'THE man' = 'DER Mann', THE woman = 'DIE Frau' and 'THE child' = 'DAS Kind'.
By the way, there isn't much difference between 'je' and 'jij', but in general 'jij' is often used to emphasize the person. For example, when you say: "YOU love football" (and not someone else)! it is only correct to use the word 'jij'. However, if you want to emphasize the verb, it is more common to use the word 'je'. For example: "You LOVE football" (you don't hate it). I hope my explanation is clear ;)
They only you in German is du as i know it. das, dem, den etc is something we call naamvallen in Dutch. It kindof gives a word meaning in the whole sentence with the naamval. We used to have this in Dutch too, but we deleted it out of our grammar. We only say for example in the morning = 's ochtends and the 's means des
The consonant system of Dutch did not undergo the High German consonant shift and has more in common with English and the Scandinavian languages. Like most Germanic languages it has a syllable structure that allows fairly complex consonant clusters. Dutch is often noted for the prominent use of velar fricatives (ch and g, pronounced at the back of the mouth).
Dutch grammar also shares many traits with German, but has a less complicated morphology caused by deflexion, which puts it closer to English. Dutch has officially three genders, masculine, feminine, and neuter, however, according to some interpretations these are reduced to only two, common and neuter, which is similar to the gender systems of most Continental Scandinavian languages.
Zij is dus echt geen mislukte popzangeres, maar een meisje van nu 21 jaar die al verschillende prijzen heeft gewonnen, waaronder een zilveren harp! Ze schrijft haar nummers zelf, en heeft ook een paar naar mijn mening erg goede covers en haar nieuwe nummer baby blue is schitterend. Doe haar dat maar eens na
people from abroad say Dutch sounds like German.. but there are many many differences, although German is easier for most Dutch people to learn than French or whatever. I don't know if it's closer to English though.. maybe some words are.. because people here tend to take over English words easier?
dutch is closer to english than german, but there isn't mutch difference between dutch and german for outsiders.. However people who do speak one or the other, can hear the difference very well!
To my opinion Dutch is more like German, the way a sentence is written is completely equal to German, tho in German there's no gerund. I'm reading/Ik ben aan het lezen - German, has no equal to that, but some dialects have. 'Ich bin am lesen' is a dialect thing in Nordrhein-Westfalen, but it's not proper German.
Okay, in Dutch the 'cases' are almost gone, just like in English.
But further to my opinion Dutch looks more like German.
It was written as a protest song for the glory of the Dutch (rebel)leader Prince William of Nassau.
You refer to the last two lines of the first stanza. In which is indicated that the leader of the Dutch civil war against Spanish Empire of which they were part, had no specific quarrel with Philip II of Spain,
but rather with his emissaries in the Low Countries, like Fernando Álvarez de Toledo. This may have been because at the time (late 16th century) it was uncommon to publicly doubt the Divine Right of Kings.
"den Koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd." is "I always respected the king of Spain." in English. It has nothing to do with loyalty to the Spanish king, as that would make the stanza self-contradicting. It simply states that Wilhelmus respected the king of Spain.
I have found this whole topic soo intersting, If I have to do a research paper in our history class, I will definety do it on Wilhem of Nassau- It seems like the more replies I get, the more I want to know about him. I guess thats why the Dutch revolt was sucessful- I havent never heard of him before but he seems like a very distinct person.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this song(the lyrics) suck! We r Dutch=Netherlands (not Deutch=German) but the King was from Germany, so in the song they sing, WE r of german blood"". Yes, THEY r, WE r not. Then it says "we honor the king of spain" again that was their family, not ours. Listen to "Waar de blanke top der duinen" would b much better cause its about the beauty of the NETHER(=Low)LANDS, not about race or DNA discriminative royalty.
@lauttamus ... Agreed, one of the world's most beautiful anthems. Greetings from Canada!!!!!

well, i asked it myself, too, but if you hear the 2nd part of the anthem, you should understand it better:

that I may remain brave,
your servant for always,
and defeat the tyranny,

I don't know what you have in your ass, you faggot, I've never felt anything wet in mine.
And if that is your level, then have fun down there.

Ach gut, ben de E achter Nederlands vergeten, ben jij daar de hele dag mee bezig, comments van anderen op spellingfouten controleren? Wie is hier nu een zwakzinnige? Nog zo'n 5miljoen videootjes na te gaan.......wat een simpele debiel ben jij!!!
premiumtap 3 years ago 5

There are Germans in Germany, Denmark, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Luxemburg, Belgium and the Netherlands. They all belong to different states and that's ok. There's nothing - apart from your passport and the language you use in writing - that makes you more different to someone from Berlin than me, coming from the Cologne area. There are huge cultural differences.
schrekklie 3 years ago
cultural differences are making me different from the cologne and berlin areas, right?
Don't get me wrong, I don't favor borders very much; to many states, to little space.
I wouldn't mind a single nation european continent, like you said, we're not that different. But we are slightly different and therefore such a nation would be under European Flag and not under Germanic just because germans seem to live everywhere. Germs always do:)
If we'd consider us germans, we would be germans.
mrispens 3 years ago
You might not understand, and yes it is because it's a nationalistic feeling.
European, Dutch or German flag doesn't really matter. But as dutch, we don't feel subject to Germany, but we do feel equal to germany as Europeans.
Being under German flag would hurt in our pride and history. Equal to Germany under european flag is recognition for our history.
But yes, the Dutch will always think we are the better country of the two. Just wait next month.
mrispens 3 years ago
Now people will come up claiming Germany is automatically the worser country thanks to the wars in just a few years.
But don't let us forget the slave trades, East-Indies and all other actions considered crimes against humanity these days for over hundreds of years.
Dutch history, like any other European nation, has proud moments and more than one very dark pages, but it worked out alright. For now
mrispens 3 years ago
Well, anyway, I will never feel as being abroad, when I'm in Holland or Austria. And as I said Eastern Germany is much more different to where I come from than the Netherlands.
But yeah ok, good suggestion, let's wait for next month. We'll have three teams: Germany, Holland and Austria. One of them might win...
schrekklie 3 years ago
At one point in history we decided that we were more über then you germans, that's what happened. We're way too cool for you germans, you can't party with us, we're way ahead of you retarted bradwursten.....pfffffff. Halve communisten met vervuild bloed van de polen. Oprotten!

schrekklie, we ARENT FUCKING GERMAN. If you dont know shit then please stfu.
The time the anthem was made, GERMANY DIDNT EXIST, it would take 300 years before germany finally came up.
AND its not Duitsen bloed but DIETS, and thats something TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

I have heard there like 12 diffent ways to say "YOU" in German: Du,Das,Den,Dem
What bout dutch?
alikos88 4 years ago
you = jij, je, jullie
Praetorian84 4 years ago
pronounced "yey" "ye" "yullie"?
The "J" is pronunced "Y" correct?
alikos88 4 years ago
yea kinda , same with yes = ja you're = jouw you are = jij bent
Praetorian84 4 years ago
Jij is pronounced "Yei". In German there is only one way to say 'you', that is 'du'. The other words like der, die, das, dem, den etc. are articles. E.g. 'THE man' = 'DER Mann', THE woman = 'DIE Frau' and 'THE child' = 'DAS Kind'.
LindavG 4 years ago

We only say for example in the morning = 's ochtends and the 's means des
nightfairie86 4 years ago 3
In German, there are indeed twelve ways to say "you". But it's not that complicated if you know the grammatical cases.
Singular - Nominative: DU, Genitive: DEINER, Dative: DIR, Accusative: DICH
Plural - Nom: IHR, Gen: EUER, Dat: EUCH, Acc: EUCH
Singular and Plural (polite form) - Nom: SIE, Gen: IHRER, Dat: IHNEN, Acc: SIE
schrekklie 3 years ago
The consonant system of Dutch did not undergo the High German consonant shift and has more in common with English and the Scandinavian languages. Like most Germanic languages it has a syllable structure that allows fairly complex consonant clusters. Dutch is often noted for the prominent use of velar fricatives (ch and g, pronounced at the back of the mouth).
nightfairie86 4 years ago

I guess that clears it up -I was always confused about that part.
if there were a Soccer match between Espana and Nederlands- and some of the spanish players could understand Dutch...
I think the Team ESPANA would expect KNVB to go "easy" on them and let them win...you know out of respect to the KONING VAN HISPANJE - lol!
alikos88 4 years ago
The Spain ruled the Netherlands thoseday, and in the Anthem it is more a protest song, Loyalty to the king of spain is just sarcastic.
Further more, Dutch = duits, that's true, they sing that, but it used to be DIETS, which has nothing to do with germany.
Snowwhite881 4 years ago
So Duits is Holland and DEUTSCH is German?
I honestly cant tell the difference -
Oh well maybe its like here With spain and portugal- we look the same, sound the same to others but there ARE differences
alikos88 4 years ago
Dutch = "Nederlands" (in Holland)
Deutsch = "Duits" (In Germany)
Those are 2 totally different languages :)
zihera8 4 years ago
They are somewhat similar though? are they not? I have heard Dutch is closer to english?!
Words like "Vaderland", "Den", "koning" sound pretty German to me.
alikos88 4 years ago
people from abroad say Dutch sounds like German.. but there are many many differences, although German is easier for most Dutch people to learn than French or whatever. I don't know if it's closer to English though.. maybe some words are.. because people here tend to take over English words easier?
zihera8 4 years ago
Dutch is similar to German becouse we have the same ancestors, the German tribes who also settled in the Netherlands.
lordbone 4 years ago
Well, yes it sounds like sometimes, like 'Ich bin' in german and 'Ik ben' dutch means the same, 'I am'.
JipKranjcar 4 years ago
dutch is closer to english than german, but there isn't mutch difference between dutch and german for outsiders.. However people who do speak one or the other, can hear the difference very well!
xxxLoveKellyxxx 4 years ago 3
To my opinion Dutch is more like German, the way a sentence is written is completely equal to German, tho in German there's no gerund. I'm reading/Ik ben aan het lezen - German, has no equal to that, but some dialects have. 'Ich bin am lesen' is a dialect thing in Nordrhein-Westfalen, but it's not proper German.
Okay, in Dutch the 'cases' are almost gone, just like in English.
But further to my opinion Dutch looks more like German.
Gaiajohan 4 years ago
In the German language Deutsch means german, example: ich spreche Deutsch = I speak German.
In German Dutch = Hollandisch
In the English language Dutch means: the language of the Netherlands, so i speak Dutch = (in Dutch)Ik spreek Nederlands

I am from Spain (Espana)
I have a Question -
WHY do you Dutch(Duits) people pleadge "everlasting loyaly to the king of spain? "der Koenig van Hispanjen"
Why OUR king?????? Dont you have your Own king?
Does that mean dutch citizes pledge loyalty to King Juan Carlos? I am UBER CONFUSED!!??
Please Explain...
alikos88 4 years ago
Pay attention to the 32 Sec - 42 Sec
I looked up the translantion
"I have pledged a lifetime loyaly to the King of Spain"
"to the king of spain, whom I have pledged loyalty"
?????
alikos88 4 years ago
It was written as a protest song for the glory of the Dutch (rebel)leader Prince William of Nassau.
You refer to the last two lines of the first stanza. In which is indicated that the leader of the Dutch civil war against Spanish Empire of which they were part, had no specific quarrel with Philip II of Spain,
ismaelvanwijk 4 years ago
but rather with his emissaries in the Low Countries, like Fernando Álvarez de Toledo. This may have been because at the time (late 16th century) it was uncommon to publicly doubt the Divine Right of Kings.
ismaelvanwijk 4 years ago
"den Koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd." is "I always respected the king of Spain." in English. It has nothing to do with loyalty to the Spanish king, as that would make the stanza self-contradicting. It simply states that Wilhelmus respected the king of Spain.
MatriarkTerVel 4 years ago
So Wilhelmus rebelled against the Spanish nobility - and not the King?
alikos88 4 years ago
Naturally, he rebelled against the Spanish king, but the stanza simply states that he had respect for the king of Spain. :P

it was during the 80 year war... the netherlands were fighting spain. and this song like the same as the french have..
It's a song to encourage your men..

I have found this whole topic soo intersting, If I have to do a research paper in our history class, I will definety do it on Wilhem of Nassau- It seems like the more replies I get, the more I want to know about him. I guess thats why the Dutch revolt was sucessful- I havent never heard of him before but he seems like a very distinct person.

this song(the lyrics) suck! We r Dutch=Netherlands (not Deutch=German) but the King was from Germany, so in the song they sing, WE r of german blood"". Yes, THEY r, WE r not. Then it says "we honor the king of spain" again that was their family, not ours. Listen to "Waar de blanke top der duinen" would b much better cause its about the beauty of the NETHER(=Low)LANDS, not about race or DNA discriminative royalty.

the lyrics don't suck, you should learn your history better! and btw, the original word was Diets so it means that we're Dutch, go google it.
