"Ya ee it on the offramps, ther innercity parks and a dozen places scattred round this town Some are pushin' everything they own In castoff shoppin' carts driftin aimlessly Until the sun goes down Ya take it all for granted cause it never seems to end like the dead cats or the signs along the street Till ya recognize a Homeless guy who last week was a friend dressed in shitstained pants and can't so much as speak" jwf/destitution road/Roadside Business/Catbreth studios Inc.
Was a responsible music lover and tracked down some prior Savoy Brown and Kim Simmonds. Worth every penny. Got the "Savoy Brown Collection," which is roughly from from '68 to '78 and includes this tune, Tell Mamma, Poor Girl and others. But the jewel discovered was a compilation of tunes from 2000-2008. Wow. It's all Simmonds and all good, with some J.L. Hooker, Willie Dixon and old school tunes but a majority of blues inspired stuff written by Simmonds. Really kinda overwhelmed me.
About the original L.P. ending. I have a good friend whom I grew up with. His family lived next door to my family. His Dad was, at the time, a program director for the best radio station in the States; WXRT- Chicago. He brought this home and we were listening to H.B. Train, I'm like 13 yrs old. In the middle of what seemed the the get down and get with it part, it just stops to a dead silence. Shocked the crap out me.
Severely underated band. Great images. Good job. Savoy Brown is way up on my play list - unlike the Lady Gaga crowd. Poor Girl, Tell Mamma and all in between. Something special here. Just sit down with a guitar and follow this. It's deep - haunting.
A very deep, heavy hitting portrait of dark imagery. Quite haunting really... always loved this tune. Liked the live version on Savoy Brown Greatest Hits Live... sadly no longer available//
@maxinfidel This is not the original ending. On the album the song cranked along at full throttle and full volume until it suddenly and I do mean suddenly just comes to a complete stop. I had a buddy who was rocking back and forth and loving the song actually fly out of the chair and onto the floor and then look up at me and say what the F happened. I looked at him and said the song ended. If you can get a copy of the record check it out. This was taken from the CD.
A fantastic track from a band that never really got its due. If you were to compile a true soundtrack from that era, this song should be the lead track.
It has been nearly thirty-five years since I last heard this. Another perfect example of music which "stands the test of time". It just couldn't be any better.
I was lucky enough to see Savoy Brown in the best little bar in the universe, Vegetable Buddies in South Bend Indiana about 1979 or so. It was like a religious moment when the band started this song. The whole bar went silent like church. Thank you Kim and the rest of the guys for a masterpiece of music.
Great song from the early 70's. Remember it very well like it was yesterday. Still love the guitar sounds of that era compared to decades after the 60's/70's. The songs and sounds in the music were just very unique and creative.
I had never heard of this band until I heard this song last year on an old cassette that my friend's dad played in his garage, on a cassette deck, ripped from some car, and hotwired to speakers in an old garage.
I will spend the rest of my days trying to pass on the awesomeness of that experience to others.
I always liked the song but these are some excellent pictures to go with it.I have traveled the part of Route 66 that runs through Illinois where I live.I would love to follow it further someday.I know my dad said we traveled it on vacation a couple times when I was a kid but I hardly remember. Thanks MayaAtlantis.
Rusty&dog I know how what you guys mean.I went camping in the Sierra Nevadas and Yosemite as a teenager and we had two 8 track tapes with us.One was Hellbound Train. We played it for almost 3 days straight.I never got tired of it back then and still dig it today. They don't make music like it anymore that I have heard.
@VeryRustyDay You said it. I make it my missoin to turn everyone on to this and other bands, like Humble Pie, Blue Cheer, The Small Faces, Spirit. I have played this and other music for people in their teens and twenties and they love it. I think younger kids are starving for some real music and not the crap that passes for it today.
thanks for posting maya i agree with fmdog, this has always been one of my favorite jams since i was a 15 yr old kid. just goes to show how old i am eh lol

Seen Savoy Brown at Clay's Park in Ohio 2009 and loved this song. They don't write songs like this now a days.
