You say that you understand my point. So,why debate with me on what I said. The reason why I wrote it like that was because I didn't have enough space to say black college lines etc and division 1 white schools etc. Certain people talk down on our lines with malice intent and no remorse. For example if you look at some recent Southern clips someone typed quote''AFRICAN lines think there so bad when they're not. THEY ALL SUCk''. I told that person to watch what they say. That should be the focus.
DCI percussionists are not automatically superior. The section leader for FORT VALLEY STATE'S DRUMLINE which is an (HBCU) marched with the MAGIC OF ORLANDO before going to college. The reason why I know is because I've worked with their line on upgrading techniques as well as ALBANY STATE and MILES COLLEGE which are all HBCUs. I played for Albany State's line and made 90% of the cadences that they still perform today. All of those lines have incorporated some DCI tech. and have improved.
The snare visuals are tight but the performance is not up to par. It needs to be much cleaner and dynamics need to be added. Also the margin between CORP STYLE and SHOWSTYLES LINES as shrunk tremendously in the past 10 years. It used to be true that if you marched corp you'd be better off but not now. Black lines can chop and out chop some white ones. This line needs to improve but it does have potential. Also understand that DCI percussionists are not perfect, they can get chopped out too.
What I mean is when you see a corp line on TV there are going to be mostly white faces for example(FLORIDA STATE). If you go to the Florida Classic you will see more African-Americans(FAMU and Bethune-Cookman). The point is we choose different schools and styles because of cultural backgrounds. People that march in showband drumlines are just as capable as people in corp lines of performing rudiments at a high level. We all choose to do different things in our performances.
I understand why you'd make such a distinction but using methods like that makes you no different from these racist youtubers everywhere and I yes I know that wasn't you intention but lets avoid such differences.
I never said there was a black and white style of play. A lot of them(DCI) think we can't chop like them and they underestimate our abilities. If you read my other statement below it points out that a current section leader at an HBCU marched DCI with the MAGIC before going to college. I have played with and trained both black and white percussionists. NO, I DO NOT fall in the same category as other racists. I'm just simply pointing out that race is a non-factor when it comes to perccusion.
I wasn't referring to style of playing, I was referring to your methods of distinction which are quite similar to some of the assholes roaming around here. I fully understand that wasn't your intention but stating "Black lines can chop and out chop some white ones." is no different from saying "White lines can out chop black lines" now that statement would be perceived as racist. I just suggesting we avoid defining lines as black or white no matter how typical a particular race is to a style.
stop talkin bout wat u dont kno about, traditional style lines stop hatin on corp style lines and ESPECIALLY in vice-versa cuz it seems lik alot of corp drummers semm 2 think dey kno ery damn thing
ur right, you wouldnt see serious marching percussion playing something this easy, but who the hell are you to compare a high school like this (with no DCI influence whatsoever) to Blue Devils or SCV.
Unlike the Blue Devils, or any DCI band for that matter, this particular school does not have the privilege of being able to audition members. What you see before you are not serious band students like you'd find in a DCI, but just kids who wanted something fun to do afterschool.
Its simple so inexperienced music students can learn it quickly, and its flashy so audiences have something to look at during halftime. An audience there to watch a football game, does not care what the hell "serious marching persussion" is, and is the farthest thing from a DCI audience you could probably find. Playing complex technical cadences doesnt do it for people who dont care about percussion, or even a marching band in general.
serious highschools, who give a crap, are pretty damn good
and I understand the southern bullshit bands, yeah so you can "blow that out your own ass" point is, you posted this, and I see people saying that this shit is "good", so I disprove it
im glad u feel its ur jopb to disprove what people think is good. but anyway, yeah serious highschools who give a crap do sound pretty damn good. nowhere did i say that this was one of them. u just seem to have ur own idea that every drumline should model itself after a DCI. all im sayin is, the purpose of this line and this video was never to look or sound the way a DCI does, but to entertain everyday average people who are not concerned with what ur idea of serious percussion is or should be.
and just a question, why do you insist that this is a southern drumline? is it because u think every band in the south sucks or do you just assume theres no black serious percussionists and therefore this line must be from a "southern bullshit band"
not true, but its a southern concept, when you think show bands, its a southern thing, you don't really see that in the north where everything is corps/uniform based, not that its a bad thing
and way to throw race into it, cause there are plenty of black and white DCI drummers and I'm well aware of that
but point enough, I'm getting into teaching lines and I watch A LOT of lines, of all sorts, and I'm tired of kids acting like this is the peak of marching percussion, thats all
haha, thats cuz u cant call it an arguement til someone throws race into it, i had to validate it
but anyway, yeah, im just as sick of people settling for the simple as you are. But realistically, there are just as many southern show style lines that play very complex, technical cadences as there are northern DCI influenced bands that can't play for shit, it all just depends who's holding the spotlight.
I'm sure uve seen vids from the DCI I&E championships, so you know the guys who really stand out are the ones who perform with a lot of show style influence all while making sure their technique doesn't lack because of it. U'd probably agree serious marching percussionists try to integrate the best of both worlds.
you're crossing the line there, we're talking real quad tuning, and no snare slings here
guys like Casey and Tim Jackson from BD, who are awarded solosist, just play fast stuff with stick flips
so yeah the idea of visuals can be compared, but the visuals themselves differ greatly
but like you said, there are both clean lines, but the slings and crappy hands don't do much for the south as far as complex shows, but just as many bad lines playing flamdrags and all that jazz
Dis is kinda weak who tuned yall tenor drums??? they sound like steel trash cans and they are very weak snare drums were kinda stiff but i liked the groove to it at the beginning and snare drums were out da cadence too long just doing unnessecary sticking
yall boyz rockin.. ignore HATERS.

Please don't distinguish different styles as black or white lines.

I think what this guy means is that this southern drumming flash crap is just that
crap
its simple a simple drum book with lots of visuals
you wouldn't see the Blue Devils or SCV doing this stuff, for a reason, its not respectable in the world of serious marching percussion
