it's extremely refreshing to see a great artist saying how he finds virtual analogue just as useable as analogue. strange how it's always the guys who have never really taken their music anywhere that whine about everything that isn't analogue...
these fuckin drug companies turn everything into a disease so they can sell drugs. now being SHY is a fucking disease... what the fuck?? i suppose they will have drugs for kids who dont want to eat their vegetables one day
@deaftron Gary (Like Myself) has Aspergers Syndrome (I believe he was diagnosed in 2001). Unfortunately, despite our attempts to avoid it, one of problems we suffer is that of appearing stand-offish to others in certain situations or with strangers. Thankfully though, people usually soon realise it's not deliberate and it becomes less of a problem as you get to know eachother better.
@christhesnaildriver i am a support worker and support someone with aspergers. its difficult as well because most people dont know what it is and you cant tell by looking at someone that they have it and so they can make assumptions. i hope it doesnt have too much of a bad impact on your life as anything like mental health and learning difficulties can make people very isolated.
Love his music and ethos. One of the pioneers of dark and progressive music. Digging his new sounds along with other industralized acts like Nine Inch Nails, How to Destroy Angels, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle,
I really respect Gary a lot for his practical approach. It would be so easy for him to play into some kind of expected analogue king from back in the day, when synths were real synths and all. Instead its 'Im happy just recreate this sound on the Virus' or 'this drum track is on a DAT'. I myself got really into the sound of it all back then too but for Gary it seems like it was just a passing tool of the time that he grabbed hold of. Brilliant!
gary prefers the moog because it has limitations. newer synthesisers can go do anything, which is very worrying, because a good musician uses an instrument to the limit of its abilities. his words.
He's got some questionable pieces of gear in there, like the M1 and D550. I love my D550, but the sound quality is horrid. Had an M1R at one stage. Got rid of it almost straight away. It was sort of a micky mouse Synclavier at the time. Very innovative and ground breaking, but somehow all sounds had the same character.
I dont know why dischord got so many thumbs down. He's correct. Virus cannot reproduce early analog sounds like an early analog can. Its a good synth, but you'll never do better than just using the originals.
I've used a Virus before, and I have used a lot of analogue synths. Virus, Nord Lead, Ms2000, software synthesizers all sound good with their own unique sound. Analogue synths have their own sound that cannot be duplicated. You cannot get Minimoog, Andromeda a6, Prophet 5, and yes . . . Polymoog . . . out of a Virus. I have been programming synths and samplers for 15 years.
That's quite a career for a 26 year old. I doubt you can afford any of that gear certainly not a Virus. Shame, I could have sold you my MS20, Monopoly and CS1-5.
We're all experts on the internet, some people think $500 power cables, one way oxygen free speaker cables and wooden knobs improve their sound system. I'll trust Gary.
Wow. Your opinion really doesn't even matter because you're a jerk. How you think someone cannot afford a Virus at 26 years of age is beyond me. I only own two synthesizers now, MS2000 and Andromeda a6 (i will never sell my andromeda). I have had many synths i've bought and sold. Anyway this is pointless . . . you're just an asshole. Analogue synths sound different because of the nature of their oscillators. This is common knowledge.
And as far as Numan goes . . . he's no synth master. His most signature sound is a preset off the polymoog. I love Numan, but I'm just saying he's not an amazing programmer . . . simplicity is actually his greatest talent. ::shrug::
Difficult one this........For sure, nothing sounds like a Minimoog Model D, and it's extremely difficult to get the Vox Humana patch out of anything other than a Polymoog 280A. But, it's not so easy keeping vintage gear running so I can see pros and cons..
Numan hates all nostalgia and is (almost) obsessed in trying to stay up to date, that's why he treats all the old synths with such contempt.
Shame really, as Depeche Mode have "backpeddled" to great effect in using old analog gear...........
The thing is, the polymoog has its own sound, you could make a close sound to it with the TI, but it wont be the same. There are pros and cons with vintage gear, on the pros it has a special warm sound that no virus can copy, but can recreate in its own way, on the other hand, the Polymoog is old and heavy and probably not as reliable as the virus.

I'm just here to watch Gary Numan. I've got absolutley no idea what any of you are talking about. Something about synthasithers.

I reckon I'll trust Gary Numan's opinion on the Access Virus vs old analogue synths rather than some random internet people.

Gary, retire. You're boring and very sad, you have been since, er, 1980!.

As much as i love access virus, it will never have the same warmth and phatness of real analog, such as the actual moogs.

Great vid.
Very pleasant likeable bloke, that Gary Numan.
I'm not sure about the synth rig though.

To say the Virus can reproduce any of the early Moog sounds including the Polymoog, an do it better is just laughable.

How the fuck would you know dischodantbelief?

Technically speaking, moog's are real analog. Not virtual analog. BTW Virus is ok, but only with integrated effects on top of sound.

I take it you've usd a Virus and are an expert synth programmer with decades of experience.
