Istabrac would of won 4 champion hurdles if it wasnt for the foot and mouth out break which canceled the festival that year,he came back the following year but it was not to be,what a great shame.
What a brilliant horse he was, certainly one of the best hurdlers I ever saw. I think Charlie Swan must have had neck ache every time he partnered Istabraq, have you ever seen a jockey constantly looking round all the time wondering where the challengers were??

Some of my favourite hurdle races have been that one on the Saturday at the Aintree meeting, not just Istabraq laughing at French Holly, but Morley Street doing Granville Again when thought to be past it. I'd say it's my favourite race of the whole Aintree meeting over the years. Istabraq - mad cow disease stopped him doing the 4 timer. No horse could have. The benchmark for all other hurdlers to be measured against.
Great montage. What a racehorse - started favorite on all 29 of his NH races. That Champion Hurdle win in 1998 was probably the best single performance I have ever seen over hurdles. He became a national institution in Ireland by the end of his career. Legend!
what i find very insulting is that dato stars performance when winning at haydock on bog heavy ground backin 200 was rated better than anything istabraq ever did.
i think that is a complete joke and an insult to a briliant champion like istabraq who proved himself year after year and time and time again
