  • well, there go my chances of sleeping well tonight.

  • Japan seems really peaceful

  • Can it do math?

  • Is there where they got the style for their dragons and such?

  • epic. colors of the legs just so terrifying

  • It's hungry for blood.. D:

  • I see it follows you, he want to bite you

  • hmm , lol.. thats nothing xD

  • is, is it on me?..... I feel like it's on me!!!

  • great video, iv just recently bought one of these as a pet and it great to see them as an adult, they are fascinating to watch eat and move

  • Dang, should've eaten the other insect at 2:09 !!!

  • Awesome!

  • Jap Style color!

  • Wow, accurate unsensational title, lead-in, steady camera, gradual focusing, actual audio without commentary, or pointless background music, and a quick follow up, A++++

People with video cameras could learn a lot by watching this video as a "how to".

  • I was expecting to see three people attached to each other via their gastric systems, but this is cool too!!

  • Are they faster than snakes? Do they kill snakes?

  • @HardKore5250

No, they are not faster than snakes. Yes, they can kill snakes up to 1.5 times their size (girth, not length), anything past this would be too strong for a centipede to subdue.

  • hey kurt,

    do u live in japan?

so yes are there giant water animals or something

  • i wonder if you could get two of them to fight...

  • fuck if i saw a fucking thing like that i would pull out my .44 mag and blow it the fuck away.

  • im Asian

  • i love his accent. #LOL

  • It's...

    kind of cute.

  • A very beautiful specimen indeed.

  • Disguasting animal

  • by its colour can already tell how dangerous it is...suddenly i felt something crwling on my foot!!!!

  • This species is very common in the pet industry. They are called Scolopendra Mutilans, this particular one is a orange legged mutilans, they can be kept in communal tank set ups. The one you taped is a very very good size :)

  • wow o.o hes a big boy, thanks for taking the time to show him to us :)

  • It really has a beatufully "gothic" color.

  • could you imagine waking up to one of those crawling around your junk!

  • Mukade is very annoying but beneficial creatures for us by controlling the ecological balance. That's true in spiders in our house. Giant spiders can even kill cockroaches. It's ironic they are not thanked but hated us by their ugli looks.

  • Is it true they have 100 legs??? Thanks for showning this to us

  • @unboxingreviewdude The number of legs can actually vary greatly. I'm not sure of the average number. ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa Wikipedia!

  • @softypapa i think the average number of legs is between 32-36 pairs of legs :)

  • @unboxingreviewdude 23 or 24 im not too sure though millipedes have 100 or so plus legs

  • This was awesom!!!

  • Wow, Kurt, great job capturing this elusive creature on video. This was a beautiful specimen, and it's uncommon to see home video of these in their natural habitat (most home videos of scolopendrids are taken of pets in captivity).

These most definitely have a poisonous bite; the mandible-like appendages on the sides of the centipede's head are what inject the venom into its prey. The fangs are hollow to conduct the venom and very sharp, and these guys definitely know how to use 'em.

  • @Jimaera I'm delighted you enjoyed seeing this video. I was equally thrilled to spot this big fellow hunting along the ground. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips. ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa is it poisonous?

  • @beogia05 Yes, these huge centipedes are indeed venomous though the bite should cause more pain than long term damage. We certainly need to be wary around them though. ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa I like millipeds better.

  • i'm very glad I fought my bug/insect fear and decided to watch this video. it was very interesting though it was scary to watch.

  • What would it have done if you got to close? Bite you? I don't know :D

  • What a fantstisches animal, it looks like from a Science Fiction film.

  • Looks incredible, is that thing poisonous or anything?

    Looks VERY dangerous and poisonous.

  • nice camera skills!!

  • This is no better than suzume bachi when you get stung.

Good side is this one doesn't come in a group and doesn't sting where unexpected such as by the neck or the back, but most of the time foot or hand.

I was told many times that my aunt got stung when she was young. Scarey story.

  • Thanks Kurt. That was DUH BOMB! Feile Case

  • I have to admit I squirmed like a little girl watching that thing crawl around. I don't know what I'd do if I saw one of those in my house!

  • What a beautiful creature.

  • Wow, that centipede looks cool, you weren't scared to get so close.? o-o;

    That thing iz huge. x-x

  • @Killa9904 It was indeed a little scary getting so close. Thanks for watching! ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa Np, your videoz are very interesting.

  • I hope you don´t walk barefeet in those areas. Colourful and fascinating spieces

  • @pekinobo I try to avoid being barefoot here as there are also many fast and aggressive mountain leeches eager to cartwheel after me in search of a blood meal. I'm happy you chose to join me on this outing. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • What beautiful colours! And the legs looks like they're made of rubber, haha.

Are they dangerous apart from being able to bite? Like poisonous or something?

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @Kaminix Oh, just saw your reply to Mystek23 about them being venomous.

    Very interesting.

  • @Kaminix Isn't that amazing about the fang-legs? In fact, all of the centipedes legs include venom glands and very large centipedes can leave welts on your skin just from crawling over you. With so many legs the centipede has enough to spare and in addition to the fang-legs at the front the rear-most legs are modified into "feelers" which are used to sense what is going on in the area behind the centipede. Thanks for watching. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa Amazing! Also thanks for always repying to comments, it's always very interesting to read your replies. :-)

  • @Kaminix It's my pleasure! I'm sorry that I am sometimes so late in response. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • Awesome video! First time I've seen an Asian Giant Centipede; they certainly are big lol. Are they dangerous? (poisonous?) Thanks for sharing Kurt.

  • @Mystek23 Centipedes are indeed venomous though they deliver their venom not via jaws but instead by modified front legs which are hollow and include venom glands. These modified legs look like enormous fangs though in fact a centipede does not "bite" its victim as much as it "grabs" with it's fang-like legs. A very fascinating creature! Thanks for watching. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • It's really giant!

  • @zhangsha555 These centipedes can indeed get very large. This particular specimen was big though I have seen larger centipedes in this same area. They often give me a shock when I find them crawling about near my feet. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa Yeah~You should be shocked~And have a great day too!!!

  • Are there any millipedes in Japan? How large are they? I happen to be very interested in millipedes and I have one as a "pet". If you happen to find any, could you try to film it?

  • @BlueMew There are indeed many species of millipedes in Japan and some can get quite large. I will try to make a video of one the next time I have a chance. Thank you for letting me know you might be interested in such a video. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • it looks like the place with the rock wall and pathways, i didnt like the centipede iv seen bigger if i were to encounter it in my house it would be dead but id just prolly walk away from it in nature

  • @Invisiblepanda You are right! This is indeed the abandoned garden featured in the video "A Special Place". I'm impressed you recognized the site! Thanks for watching. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • that was majestic. thank you. <3

  • @maliciousdevice I'm delighted you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • If this Centipede were larger, like human size or bigger, then we talk. Ok?

  • @sandor139 This specimen was indeed only a medium size animal. The big ones always give me a shock especially when I spy them zipping along past my feet while resting in the mountains. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • AHHHH its centipedzilla! seriously that thing is huge!

  • @patsybob What a great term "centipedzilla". Thank you for watching and sharing this excellent name! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • Cool centipede, looks like something out of a monster movie! :)

  • @TheGhostOfSabotage Centipedes are certainly excellent source material for writers of fiction involving monsters. Thanks for watching! Have a great day. ~Kurt :-)

  • what a beast...yiiiiikes

  • @dirtbaggz What a beast indeed! I dread finding one of these in my shoe, clothes or bedding (they seem to like hiding in futons). Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • I used to see heaps of them in Izu my Japanese co-workers of the time would freak out!

  • @shibuyakun I live fairly close to Izu and would love to explore more there. I will certainly keep my eyes open for centipedes the next time I hike in that area. Have a good day! ~Kurt :-)

  • They are magnificent, I wish we had more of these than snails or slugs(shudder) Some giant species can take on rodents!

  • @jxz107 I agree that centipedes are indeed magnificent. It's also interesting to note that there are usually many centipedes in a forest though few are seen during daylight hours due to their preference for dark, moist places. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • O.O their so Beautiful But I'm scared of them...because What my mom tells me. Since I was young my mom and grandmother would say....they would crawl into your ear.........T.T

  • @kaoru85 Your mother's information is very interesting. I have heard that in old Japanese homes centipedes would sometimes hide in futons to the great surprise and shock of the sleeper. I sure would hate to have that experience. Thank you for writing and sharing with us. ~Kurt :-)

  • Hi softy, I just found your channel today. It's almost like watching uncut Planet Earth filming ;) pretty awesome. I enjoy your videos very much. You may be the next David Attenborough!

  • @pudicus2 Thank you very much for watching and for your nice words. I sure do enjoy making and sharing these videos and I am so delighted that you have come with me on some of my outings. I promise to work hard to make more and better videos in the future! Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • I'm not the squeamish sort...but if one of these things got near me I would scream like a little girl. Definitely to be admired from a distance.

  • @killerecho I'm with you on this one. I like seeing and filming these creatures though I dread the day I find one in my shoe or pack. ~Kurt :-)

  • Black and red

    ō-yoroi,

    A hundred feet

    to march on.

  • @reymiland Wow! This video would seem to present a bit of a challenge in terms of poetry though you have risen to the occasion (no surprise there) and composed something which reads well and captures the sense of motion and purpose which is so evident in this hunting centipede. Your poem has been added to the video in info and annotations. Thank you as always for sharing your gift with words with us. Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa: You honor my insignificant comment. I am pleased you found happiness in it. Please keep up the video's as I learn more and more about a place I have always wished to visit.

  • its a really cool looking bug but I'd hate to have one crawling on me

  • @StatuesBleedingGreen Me too! I suspect that the day will come when I may find one hiding in my backpack or in my shoe. I try to always check though I guess it's only a matter of time given that I spend so much time in their natural habitat. Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • What a magnificent animal! I will attempt to write a poem about it.

  • Handled the dead one like you were Steve Erwin.. but don't see you picking this one up, brother ;-)

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom One does not touch the War Machine without suffering the consequences. I encounter these big centipedes often enough that I suspect it is only a matter of time before I will find one hiding in my pack or resting in my shoe. I guess that the resulting story might make an interesting YouTube video. I hope that you are well and enjoying a nice start of summer. Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • I hope to never encounter one,I'm sooo afraid of them:/

  • @kushinbou You may be able to avoid touching a centipede if you are careful in the places where they like to hide. Check your shoes, clothes and bedding when in Japan and you may be in good shape. Thanks for watching and commenting! ~Kurt :-)

  • Got a really close view one of those a few years ago when one crawled out from under my friends shirt-collar...

    Nasty buggers.

  • @Peekingduck Whoh! That would be a startling sight! I hope that your friend was not bitten. Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • @softypapa

He was OK but after killing it (with a Japanese / English dictionary) we showed it to his wife.

I hear they can give you a bit of a sting, right?

How bad a sting are we talking, any idea ?

  • @Peekingduck I'm glad that your friend was alright. That's pretty funny that you killed it with a Japanese / English dictionary. :-) Most centipedes can inflict a nasty bite and are able to inject venom though such bites are usually not serious unless the victim is allergic. My father-in-law has been bitten twice by the Asian Giant and he described the bite as very painful though without any lasting effects. I'm not sure about the situation with other centipedes though. Have a great day!~Kurt:-)

  • @Naproxenum I would pay to hear you scream when it "sucks".

  • Seems that the guy wanted to eat your camera...

  • @AndreR241 This big centipede did indeed seem interested in the camera. It got a little too close for comfort a few times. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • Amazing video! Great camerawork, keep it up!

  • @josephjinx Thank you for your nice words. I will certainly try to bring more such videos in the future. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • What animals does it eat?

  • @DerSchnurrbart

Some actually eat bats and rodents.....

  • @hahahajman Thank you for sharing this information. These animals are certainly fascinating and perhaps one of the most amazing and fierce predators on the planet. Thanks again and have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • @DerSchnurrbart I have read that centipedes will eat anything they are able to tackle and subdue. As hahahajman pointed out this may include comparatively large animals such as small mammals and reptiles. Centipedes are certainly impressive hunters. I'm thankful that they are not larger! ~Kurt :-)

  • Great Video!

  • Those guys will give you a bite you'll never forget!

  • @BusanKevin Hi Kevin! Have you experienced being bitten by one of these big centipedes? That's one experience I will not mind skipping during this lifetime. Have a great week! ~Kurt :-)

  • Nice video, hope to see more.

    Thumbs up!!!

  • @Cebrail1991 Thank you for the nice comment. I will certainly do my best to bring more and better videos to YouTube. Thanks for watching! ~Kurt :-)

  • Seeing life thrive in an almost unseen microcosm is simply stunning. Really gets you thinking about your place in the world.

  • @yousefamar I really like the point you make. I agree that there is a big advantage to seeing animals behaving in their natural environment. I suspect I will be thinking about our place in the world for the next several days. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • it's very beautiful , but it's absolutely revolting at the same time :D , i don't like creepy crawlies , so ya , it seemed to want to follow you lol

  • @DaivyElectrica I understand what you mean as these creatures both fascinate and frighten me at the same time. I agree that there were times in the video when I was sure the centipede was coming after me. I did get attacked by a huge spider I was trying to film today. The giant took a flying leap through the air at the camera which really gave me a start! I will need to be more careful in the future when trying to film these amazing animals. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

  • For some reason I would NOT want that in my bed....

How well does it see? Since its a predator it should have fairly good eye sight, right?

  • @Degenskonto: they rely more on vibrations and scent I think.

  • @dravarian26 I think you are right about this. Thank you for sharing about these fascinating creatures! ~Kurt :-)

  • Wow, fantastic video! Can't wait to see more of your vids, like always :)

  • @ikaruthenobody Thank you for watching and for your nice words. I will certainly try to bring more and better videos! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)
