I think you have to separate people from the culture that they live in. There may be things that an individual truly believes, and things that society has thrust upon them. I think Beck always was something of a libertarian, but because the pressure is there to support a particular party or ideology, you need a crisis like this for someone like Glenn to come out and declare what he really stands for. But too often people hear what they want to hear, even if they've only been listening for 5 mins

Do they think corporations wouldn't infringe on this version of 'liberty' they hold so dear? Why they think smaller, hierarchical groups profiting from, say a defense remit in place of the government, would be inherently less corrupt, or even efficient, is beyond me. @Thebboss That's inevitable. At some point you cease to be an original and you become a charicature of yourself. Bill Maher is a great example. Libertarian guy, but because he's anti-war, his main audience is the Left. So it becomes a natural progression. Sure, the fact that their rhetoric sells isn't lost on either of these guys, but I think much of who these guys are on TV is inevitable, but I credit both guys with at least trying to maintain some form of individuality.

Beck's interview of Texas candidate for govener, Debra Medena, was a blantant charactor assination piece that showed Beck for who he really is, a wolf in sheep's clothing, a 'turn coat' and hit man. That interview proved he is much more a republican operative than a libertarian. His on-air appeal and support of Palin as the best person to kick off their co-op of the Tea Party is yet another example of his mission. "In message" he is libertarian, yet in action he is something else.
