this is a test of a 2006 400AT? i have a 2004 400AT (the first year of this model), and even though i did the recall i still have issues sometimes where at low speed in automatic it puts it into too high of a gear ratio with a little load (climb a hill and it puts it in "5th gear" ratio), so i have to stop and then hear it downshift. did the 2006 not have any of these issues? could i put an ECM from a 2006 in mine and solve this problem. have brought it to my dealer and they can't solve it
ok, thanks, also, if i put a 2 inch lift in a stock rancher. would it make much of a difference. id use he quad for going thru thik bush, and over logs and stumps, and thru the occasional mud hole. for work. would u put a lift into a rancher for that type of work?
@TheHondaAbuser Sorry about that. There were two sets of Ranchers in 2005, the 'older' model 330s in foot shift and ESP, and the 'new' 400 ATs. You are no doubt looking at the older style 330.
@EvansAutoShop Thanks for the infro but If it not that good all I got to do is trade it or sell it. I believe it will do just fine, As long as you take care of something it will last for a long time. Alot people dont like polairs and say they break way to easy but from the ones I used they are very good atvs and they are still runing good from this day right now(99Sportsman and 01 trailboss) And I took them threw everything, Mountain sides, rivers, swamps and every mudd whole I could find lol
@Mrdeandean100 Yes you can. I had a 99 recon and it was the worst thing i ever bought. It took forever to start and when it finally did start it wouldnt stay running, and the brakes only lasted a few days. Now i have an 87 polaris trail boss 250 that works perfectly.
Im thinking about getting a 2007 rancher 420. What are the differences between the 2006 and 2007? and Is it a big deal that the rancher lacks a low range
@javaleira The test started at 1:07 but I suppose if you couldn't wait for that to go by, or even skip through it, why bother watching a test? Probably should just find some pictures to look at.....
@ATVTVCOM i watched the video but its ridiculous to wait that much to load to skip it in each video of ur chanel... ok ur doing publicity no problem, im just saying it.....
and yes i thumbs it down and i will do it again today and tomorrow and each time i pass 1 video with introductions with more than 10 secs
@javaleira Well I guess you win..... I give up! I won't make you watch even one more of our videos..... I might suggest (just in passing) that if there is a new video posted that you 'might!' want to watch, have a friend watch it first and tell you what it's like.
If anyone is thinking of buying one I would recommend the Yamaha 450, I had a Rancher 400AT and found that it has the annoying Hondamatic whine, the suspension was very stiff and the plastic is thin and scratches very easily, so I sold it and bought a Yamaha 450 and it solved all the problems
Hey, would you rather have a yamaha grizzly 450 or the rancher AT? I want a 400 class machine and these are more two choices. Your opinion is greatly appreciated thanks
Hi, i'd like some help. I am not planning on doing competitive racing (just to ride around on farms) but not sure whether to get a Honda sport atv or honda utility atv. Thanks
i have the 06 350 it not even as big as the 400 i go riding on stairstep in WV we camp at mountaintop it climbs fine and with the aftermarket diff i go where the big bores go i would say it would be perfect
Is a honda recon too small for someone 6'1 230lbs. I am looking for a trail rider, the prices used are so much better than the rancher but I am afraid I will be let down with the smaller size. I've never owned an atv before. BTW the atv tv website is great!!
Depending on your age and how and where you plan to ride the Recon is most likely a tad too small. While the Rancher is a bit more it would no doubt prove to be a far better machine for you - especially if you can swing the extra money for a 4wd model.
@jackapeople yes, it will spin a tire. those little bikes are impressive. i don't ride a recon, but they will go! you ever ridden a recon? fun little quad. it's a shame that they weren't offered with 4wd...like the yamaha timberwolf.
The low range is 1st gear. My cousin has a Polaris and driving his in LR feels the same as driving my Honda in 1st gear. I wouldn't get mad if they put a low range or espically I think it's about time for Honda to put a Diff Lock on there bigger machines.
my honda rancher 350 es 4x4 has 4000 miles on it and i change the oil and filter every now and then and i have had no problems and i a little ruff on it t times i have to say it has endured it well.
i got a question if you still have this four wheeler and have driven it alot... is your transmission slipping out of gear and making a grinding noise?
Sounds like you need a new angle sensor. Honda had a recall out on them but it ended in Oct 2008. I just changed it both of my '06 Ranchers for aprox $120.00
EXACTLY! its so dumb that they think they need "low range" all that is, is 1st gear. anybody with half a brain can put the thing in 1st and do w/e needs to be done.
Brakes. On 2-lever machines (with automatic clutches and transmissions) the left hand lever controls the rear brakes and the right hand lever controls the front brakes. Why did it evolve that way? Because motorcycles and manual-shift ATVs use the left hand lever for the clutch, the right lever for the front brake, while the rear brake is operated by a foot pedal.
The Rancher (as well as other simple, foot-shift, swingaxle ATV's like the Big Bear and the King Quad 400) are great work machines but will lack the comfort and oomph for great trail explorers - unless you're the slow and scenic type. Doug

For the same reason Jeeps and other 4 wheel drives need a low range - sometimes you just need that added leverage to creep over difficult obstacles.

why would you need a low range selection when you have the esp mode and can put it first gear for tough hills and such
