I'm American and I hate wasting food. I probably throw out less than 5% of what I buy. And I go shopping almost every other day so that my food is always as fresh as possible. There are grocery stores that donate food that is past its expiration date but still edible. Trader Joe's is one...

We have 3 dogs and cats. Food that is not consumed is used for animals. Dogs are happy and we are happy to have pets. They also do some job for us by guarding our house and a workshop. We use organic waste as mulch for our farm and we collect plastics and paper for recycling. Actually, we produce little rubbish that has to be burned or put into landfills.

actually this "waste" is caused from LAWS which dictate that certain things get thrown away after set amounts of time, for public safety. SO BECAUSE OF THESE LAWS WE HAVE EXCESS. Because there is an amount which needs to be consumed, but the laws create situtations where the excess MUST be thrown out. Working in the supermarket produce industry for many a year, my strong hunch is that whatever these estimates are for wasted food, it undershoots the actual unholy shit-ton of edible-but-trashed fruits and veggies the system generates.
If you're of a mind to suspect that capitalism 'has issues', the ultra-wasteful, massively unsustainable food system is a great place to look for validation.
@signboyy I'll answer that. No they do not, at least not in the US. Most places will fire you if you try to take food home, even if its being thrown away for whatever reason.
Does it make sense from a producers point of view to produce food that gets thrown away? You do realize that they have to make the profit for all thrown away products with those bought. So from capitalist point of view the less thrown away the more profit.
There is another reason to blame like waste management. In my country there is a law that makes producers pay for waste disposal no matter how much gets thrown away. So waste is no extra cost.

I worked in fastfood when i was 16 and every 1-2 hours there was at least 1pound of perfectly good food thrown in the trash (no one was allowed to eat it even though it was completly edible).....complete waste.... no telling what bigger restrants in bigger cities throw away per 1-2 hours

Some food has been thrown out because it is no longer edible due to being in contact with say some chemical or other contaminating substance. One does need to use caution and ask Why it was thrown out in the first place, sometimes its not all wasteful consumption.

@laprop that's interesting. I guess it depends on food culture, in Kazakhstan for instance finished food is never thrown away, instead is kept for next day or is being fed to dogs/cats.
This shows the amount of waste in this country. Some of this food is perfect for homeless and the poor. I do not know why the restaurants and small groceries throw it out. @jd007200 yea but part of the obesity problem stems from how bad a lot of the food really is. Eating 4-6 lbs of organic produce a day versus 4-6 lbs of McDonald's will show major health/obesity differences in the long run.
And I am not saying I disagree, I hate wasting food. I always eat everything on my plate because to not do so and let it spoil just seems wrong to me. I can understand food accidentally going bad, but wasting food is a major pet peeve of mine.
I try as hard as I can to not waste food and "only" take what I "know" I am going to eat.
Sadly, organic is rather expensive and the poor are usually have no choice to eat high fat, sugar GMO crap. I could never afford, (with my budget) the heath food store here in Knoxville, TN.
However, when I was living in Berlin, Germany the organic food was cheap and Mcdonald's-esque food was actually "more" expensive. And surprise, there were literally no obese people!

Could have been you were lucky to be in a place where it's nonexistent. Similarly in America there is more obesity in the Southeast and Southwest because obesity is higher among blacks and Mexicans.
Possibly, all I know is that the only place I saw overweight people in Berlin was in the tourist zones. Outside Berlin I am certian it would look at lot different. Kind of like how the San Francisco bay region is a lot different culturaly than the other outlying counties.

@jackburton2009 true. But if your looking for cheaper organic food, try your local farmers markets. They generally sell stuff from half to 3/4 the price of what you would find in a health food store. Can find really great deals at farmers markets and still sustain a healthy diet.
dive is a great film. if you haven't seen it, watch it. and if anyone isn't familiar with composting, do some research. save any actual food waste you do have and use it to grow your own food.

I use to work at Starbucks 6 years ago and you wouldn't believe the waste. They donated the dry food like granola bar etc, but the sandwiches and yogurts they would make us throw out, if we were caught taking any expired food we would risk getting fired. Starbucks always talks about taking care of the community, many corporations say the same, they are more about abusing their employess and making lots of money and only care about their shareholders

It's even worse here in Canada. I believe we throw out tons and tons of harvest to keep market prices high. As far as the retail industry goes, I worked at a local grocery store and they throw out TONS of food. I mean if something form the hot foods section is removed for over an hour, it'll be thrown out right away. Tons bread/pastry products get thrown out every day even though they're still edible.
Then think about the food families throw out because they forget it's in the fridge, etc. SMH.

I live behind a delicatessen that bags 8-12 Turkey carcasses each night with a carving knife. They perform an adequate job stripping the bones, but I drag them out of the dumpster and acquire more Turkey tidbits, for sandwiches, sausage (halal), and plenty of extra for everyone around me.

actually this "waste" is caused from LAWS which dictate that certain things get thrown away after set amounts of time, for public safety. SO BECAUSE OF THESE LAWS WE HAVE EXCESS. Because there is an amount which needs to be consumed, but the laws create situtations where the excess MUST be thrown out. And if it wasnt tossed out, and someone got sick, then there would be lawsuits, and these people complaining would be the first in the lawsuit line. Grow your own if you disagree.

Working in the supermarket produce industry for many a year, my strong hunch is that whatever these estimates are for wasted food, it undershoots the actual unholy shit-ton of edible-but-trashed fruits and veggies the system generates.
If you're of a mind to suspect that capitalism 'has issues', the ultra-wasteful, massively unsustainable food system is a great place to look for validation.

Does it make sense from a producers point of view to produce food that gets thrown away? You do realize that they have to make the profit for all thrown away products with those bought. So from capitalist point of view the less thrown away the more profit.
There is another reason to blame like waste management. In my country there is a law that makes producers pay for waste disposal no matter how much gets thrown away. So waste is no extra cost.

I worked in fastfood when i was 16 and every 1-2 hours there was at least 1pound of perfectly good food thrown in the trash (no one was allowed to eat it even though it was completly edible).....complete waste.... no telling what bigger restrants in bigger cities throw away per 1-2 hours

Some food has been thrown out because it is no longer edible due to being in contact with say some chemical or other contaminating substance. One does need to use caution and ask Why it was thrown out in the first place, sometimes its not all wasteful consumption.

@jd007200 yea but part of the obesity problem stems from how bad a lot of the food really is. Eating 4-6 lbs of organic produce a day versus 4-6 lbs of McDonald's will show major health/obesity differences in the long run.
And I am not saying I disagree, I hate wasting food. I always eat everything on my plate because to not do so and let it spoil just seems wrong to me. I can understand food accidentally going bad, but wasting food is a major pet peeve of mine.

Sadly, organic is rather expensive and the poor are usually have no choice to eat high fat, sugar GMO crap. I could never afford, (with my budget) the heath food store here in Knoxville, TN.
However, when I was living in Berlin, Germany the organic food was cheap and Mcdonald's-esque food was actually "more" expensive. And surprise, there were literally no obese people!

Could have been you were lucky to be in a place where it's nonexistent. Similarly in America there is more obesity in the Southeast and Southwest because obesity is higher among blacks and Mexicans.

@Cookies205 Obesity happens simply because our species evolved with a scarcity of food, we were constantly on the verge of starvation. So our bodies evolved with a low caloric need. Now we have such an abundance of food our bodies cannot deal with that much calories, sodium, fat and sugar.
You see this at its most extreme with certain tribal peoples, like Pacific Islanders that have the highest incidence of obesity in the world, approaching 100%.

They donated the dry food like granola bar etc, but the sandwiches and yogurts they would make us throw out, if we were caught taking any expired food we would risk getting fired. It's even worse here in Canada. I believe we throw out tons and tons of harvest to keep market prices high. As far as the retail industry goes, I worked at a local grocery store and they throw out TONS of food. I mean if something form the hot foods section is removed for over an hour, it'll be thrown out right away. Tons bread/pastry products get thrown out every day even though they're still edible.
Then think about the food families throw out because they forget it's in the fridge, etc. SMH.

I went to an investor's conference (working, not getting tips, haha) and learned that all the filet mignon lunches which were uneaten got thrown away. They used to give them to the homeless at the church nearby, but when the hotel sold, the new managers refused to bother. This is messed up. The free market clearly does NOT provide for all.

I live behind a delicatessen that bags 8-12 Turkey carcasses each night with a carving knife. They perform an adequate job stripping the bones, but I drag them out of the dumpster and acquire more Turkey tidbits, for sandwiches, sausage (halal), and plenty of extra for everyone around me.
