@chairuser4 You can count on that! Right now I am working out some wrinkles in my video editing software/codecs/drivers and I expect some downtime for about a day or two...
Spat - problem solved. After importing the Lubuntu desktop environment and logging off, you apparently need to click on 'Guest Session' in order to bring up the small gear symbol that allows you to change the default from Ubuntu to Lubuntu. Failure to do this will result in the gear remaining invisible and Ubuntu remaining the default. After clicking on the gear symbol and choosing Lubuntu, you can revert to your own session to log on to. Cheers
All went well until the install/unpacking was over. Action in the Terminal stopped and the prompt appeared. No 'package configuration' window appeared. Re-booted, no options on the password box. What now?
@LinuxSpatry Speedy response! Yes. Downloaded the .iso, created bootable usb. Works fine, so I decided to install on disk, alongside XP. After files are copied to disk, a box asks for password and other info, including desired desktop environment. LXDE is not among choices so I opted for Ubuntu and followed your video to install LXDE with results mentioned. I am obviously doing something wrong. Can't see it.
@johnhughlang this tutorial covers the installation of LXDE over ubuntu 11.10... did you open a terminal and issue sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop ? I am pretty sure that is the command to issue if you want to run LXDE on your ubuntu system.
@LinuxSpatry When I simply run Wubi from the usb it invokes an "Ubuntu Installer" with Desktop environment choices: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu. No Lubuntu, which is what I downloaded to make the USB. Odd.
@johnhughlang OK... this is what I recommend trying... Search google for unetbootin (windows version) then search for Lubuntu website. Download the disk image for Lubuntu and use Unetbootin to install it to USB. I will send you a private message with a video link that has a tutorial I made a few months ago...
@LinuxSpatry You are quick. I'll try the unetbootin installer. This might be the answer! FYI, I did use Terminal but at the end of its installing LXDE no configuration box appeared. Could not do the 'sessions' option after logging off/on that you do in the video. The installer I used to make the usb was Universal usb installer 1.8.7.9.exe. I'll try unetbootin and revert. Tks
@LinuxSpatry Repeated install fails from bootable unetbootin-made usb. Lubuntu does not like me. I'll give up for a day or 2 then, maybe, start all over. Many thanks for your assistance. Might come back to you. - jl
@554mdmd both xfce and lxde are lightweight when compared to gnome or KDE. I never do any benchmarking. My recommendation is to try the different desktop shells and see which one you like the most.
thanx for tutorial. very helpful. i wonder what kinda hardware u got stashed there. but i havent had any luck with Ubuntu 11.10 at all. logging to 2D environment, i keep loosing icons, panels, etc.
OK - Just got Ubuntu 11.10 loaded onto the Virtualbox. Couldn't install it with regular Ubuntu .iso downloads (kept aborting due to having 'live cd' option on the install. Had to download the 'alternative' text Ubuntu installation. Went with the i386 (32 bit). It seemed to go alright, and did the protocol on this video for the Lubuntu desktop install, and went with the LXDE. It seemed to work pretty good. As many are saying, I really don't like the Unity thing much.
Yes - This is an awesome video (but what the heck happened to the pirate costume at the beginning? lol)... I can't figure this out. this is the most recent Ubuntu 11.10... Does it still have Unity on it (after) the Lubuntu desktop is added, or is it just gnome at that point?
@brobriobri "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" is not available for commentary, please file any protest at your local used car dealership. Sorry for the confusion... When you select to run Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D you will get Unity.
@LinuxSpatry ..Sorry, but I'm still ignorant of the Unity/gnome thing at this point of time. From what I understand, Unity is actually laid on top of Gnome (or gnome3) - in reference to the new Ubuntu 11.10. Am I correct in making such a statement?
@brobriobri ----Spatry scratches his head---- If you want Gnome 3 you need to install that separately... I know I have a video on my channel demonstrating that...
@LinuxSpatry LOL! No, that's not what I trying to get at. It's all good. I like the video, and will probably do the same thing on Virtualbox soon so I can play around with it a little.
On my old netbook Asus EEE 901 Peppermint OS runs fast as hell, also i have replaced all look in to Windows Vista - my friends are amazed how fast Vista is until they figure out thats not Windows :D
