The US had been supporting Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden for decades before the 9/11 attacks. True these people were radicals, but their was an element of suppression, at least under the more brutal regimes, there wasn't a massacre-a-day by some extremist. Furthermore, the US hasn't had a very good influence in the past, look at South America, or SE Asia, the US screwed them.
