  • 1 minute 30 seconds is my favorite:)

  • SPUD, The cigarette that made Idaho Famous

  • Of course, the reggage version would go:

    'Oh listen to me lady,

    Listen to me stud,

If you wanna be mouth happy,

Then you gotta toke a bud'

  • @CrummyCurtis of course

  • The "snowman" was supposed to be "Spud"'s mascot, as "Willie the Penguin" was to "Kool"...

  • At 4:52 is a series of 1957 ads heralding the appearance of "New" Spud, "regroomed" for the "filter-tip" smoking market, in new packaging and the addition of a filter [Philip Morris figured, if they could "reinvent" their Marlboro brand two years before and see sales soar because of it, they could do the same for Spud]. Note the "hypnotic" ad at 7:49...

  • @fromthesidelines great background sidelined. thanks for the info

  • Spud was origially marketed by the Axton-Fisher Tobacco Co., later acquired by Philip Morris by the early '50s. The first batch of 20 second ads [with five seconds of "space" at the beginning of each so local TV stations could "blend" them into their "station breaks", inbetween programs] were originally seen around 1952-'53. Note the dig at rival Brown & Williamson's "Kool" menthol brand {"They're actually cooler than 'Kool'"}. At 1:28 is a series of 60 second ads from the same period...

  • I'm sure it read "cooler than cool" in the ad copy to prevent a lawsuit from B&W, but they weren't fooling anyone!!

  • wait how can a snow man smoke wouldnt he melt my life doeset make sence anymore im soooo confused

  • Spud. It's not toasted. It's baked.

  • @Poehr LOL

  • Great commercials! Thanks for posting.

SPUD was the nickname of the guy who invented menthol cigarettes.

  • @RiisPark99 glad you liked it

  • I could go for a "mouth happy" right about now...

  • @armours yep only the yanks

  • @armours

Why do people in the UK keep calling us "yanks"? The American Revolution was in 1776, not 1976!
