  • I'm here because I was actually in this show and want to remember my fellow castmates performing this (I was dead since I was the wolf :P )

I loved this, as well as "Your Fault"

...Also here because of ponies. XD

  • I came here expecting to be the only brony... Yet I come to find just about everypony is already here!

  • Why is My Little Pony in the related?

  • @pirateking56128 The song from MLP in the related videos is a reference to this song. It's actually a pretty good bit of music, especially for "children's" animation.

  • @BrianaGhostGirl MLP is an amazing show.

  • @pirateking56128 Click it and the relationship becomes obvious.

  • Saw this before ponies ... *hurrdurrhipsterdurr*

LOVE this play... I played the witch once and it was just too fun... Second half is better story wise, but the first act can stand on its own just fine. Go to this play live sometime, and the narrator will usually tell parents to take their kids home after Act 1... well, considering the second act

  • this song would be 20% cooler with the tune of RD's verse

  • I expected this, But why are ALL the comments about ponies?

  • @Nintendasaurus cause a song from 'My Little Pony Friendship is Magic' is based off this song

    AT THE GALA!!!!!!

  • @red5robb1 Yeah, I know -.-

  • @Nintendasaurus Ponies are popular.

  • 1:50 INTO THE GALA to MEET to SELL to FIND to PROVE to WOOP to TALK. INTO THE GALAAAAAAA (AT THE GALA!)

  • thumbs up if you came here because into the woods is awesome and can stand on its own without stupid ponies any day

  • Here because of ponies.

  • My little pony Friendship is magic bring you here!!

  • @Bijou42 I know. I'm really, really, really hoping we do it for the school production this year. ;p

  • When is RD's rock breakdown?

  • Wherever you go, ponies will take you there.

  • I dunno, I feel 'At the Gala' was at least 20% cooler then this.

  • @fotaWoodman You've gotta watch the entire musical in order to fully appreciate this. Into the Woods blows my mind all over again every single time....of course, so does MLP! ;) Ingram chooses his inspirations and influences well.

  • :D THE. BEST. NIGHT. EVER.

  • Thats kool how they made this after 'At the Gala'

  • The obvious reason this is the most viewed one of all of the "Into the woods" ;)

  • I like how every comment on the first page is about MLP

  • Comment removed

  • At the Gala?

  • Haha, I love how MLP has made this so much more popular... especially considering it was allready a great musical to start out with!

  • @siriuslyconfused1 I love Ponies. But I love Sondheim more. That said, anything that might lead people to discover the wonder of Sondheim is ok by me.

  • @printthelegends I agree :) Like I said, such a great song to begin with. Love Anything Sondheim, and I love that people who wouldn't ordinarily be exposed to him are being exposed :)

  • At The Gala. My mind is blown.

  • AT THE GALA!!!

  • I know why everyone is here...

  • AT THE GALA!

  • All our dreams will come true, right here at the Gala! At the Gala!

  • *shivers when Rainbow Dash begins singing*

  • I feel sorry for everyone here who doesn't know or like My Little Pony, but I have to do it. Forgive me. AT THE GALAAAAAAAAA!

  • I've been dreaming I've been waiting to fly with those great ponies

  • Ahh, the foreboding end of Act I...I will NEVER forget my reaction to Act II. Missed it in school because I was absent, so I borrowed the tape and watched it at home. I was completely blown away and had to buy my own copy. (Which at one point I lent to a friend and didn't get back for a while...when I did, the box was missing. XD Oh well, long as I've got my recording!)

  • At the gala, at the gala... <3

  • Fellow bronies/Pegasisters: Our godly Daniel Ingram does not base pony songs upon anything less than utter masterpieces. As a fellow musical theater and Sondheim fan long before a pony one, I can tell you this with the greatest certainty. The meanings of the original songs & shows coincide w/ the episodes. If you love the MLP songs, for the love of all things pony, you must do yourselves the favor of watching the influential musicals. They just might change you even further-especially ITW.

  • I can't even explain how powerful the show is;one of the greatest of all time, imo. My 8th grade class that studied it changed so much for me (incl. showing me that English is one of my best subjects.) Incidentally, I played the Witch 4 us--probably chosen due to my hair. ;) For which I feel crazy lucky. I worship Bernadette Peters, & secretly hope for her to show up on FiM as a Twist relative. XD Hey, she played Rita the cat on Animaniacs among other voices, & I'm convinced MLP can do ANYthing!

  • i remember "at the gala" from MLP: FiM with this song during drama class. i was singing the lyrics from that XD

  • Finally decided to watch an episode mlp. "Gee, this song really sounds like Into The Woods. Wait a sec..."

I have to agree with the top comments here. It was a nice reference, but it pales in comparison to the real thing. So I had to listen to it again :D

  • Ponies.

  • @ the gala! XD

  • How is this musical related to MLP?

  • @zcai11 /watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=_IQkkyN9JAg

  • @zcai11

    @ The Gala

  • Hurr Durr, I call myself a brony but I really just pretend to like My Little Pony so I can use it to troll people, fuck you, you shit on the names of us real bronies.

  • My Little Ponies will never compare to how great this is.

  • Came here just through Ponies. But eh, I like both.

  • I love FiM for paying tribute to Into The Woods.

    SO AWESOME. *^_____^*

At first, I thought it was supposed to sound like the Finale. My bad.

  • wow, i was linked here through 'the pony stuff' and I actually like this version a lot more. :) props for the awesome music.

  • So this is the original

  • Ponies..

    'nuff said..

  • All I hear is "in the galla" xP

  • I can't believe it....I got the baker in this musical and I am also a bronie. This is the greatest day of my life!

  • wow... ok ingram, I see where you got your inspiration, and it is glorious.

  • RIGHT HERE AT THE GALAAAAAAAAAAAA!

  • I love this musical to death!

  • I check my college requirements today and find that "Into the Woods" is one of the requirements. I remember that it was what was inspiration for At the Gala by Daniel Ingram. Semester made.

  • Did I miss something? Why is everyone talking about ponies???

  • @Nostalgia1920 Because in the closing episode of My Little Pony: Frienship is Magic season 1, The song "At the Gala", used the same music as the first sung lines of "Ever After", as a tribute. The Show's song writter, David Ingram, specializes in Broadway music styles, and incorperates some actual broadway melodies into the showes songs.

  • I love musicals, and when I heared At the Gala, two peices from it sounded familiar, but I did not know why. I read the comments, and kept seeing "Into the Woods", so I wound up here. though, I have not seen this play, I recognize the song(the first peice (probably from PBS' Broadway Special) and liked it. Thanks for posting!

  • My school is doing this for our play. I'm the narrator.

  • I knew this piece way before I got into ponies. Then when I first heard "At the Gala" I lept for joy, listened to "At the Gala", and returned to the source it paid tribute to, and listened to "Ever After."

Please quit the quality comparisions especially when this was written first and the Ponies only mean to pay loving tribute to Sondheim's work. I think Sondheim would be proud ponies love his works.

  • I was an Into the Woods fan waaay before being a Pony fan (played Cinderella last summer, and Rapunzel years ago), and because of this crossover I am now very, very, very happy. For now and ever after.

P.S. Anyone else notice the other Sondheim reference at the top of "Art of the Dress"?

  • ponies.

  • Came here after the Gala song and of course there are flame wars happening in the comments...

  • AT THE GALA IN THE GARDEN I'M GOING TO MEET THEM ALL. ALL THE CRITTERS I'LL BEFRIEND THEM AT THE GALA!

  • Great works like "Into the Woods" shouldn't need to be reminded to the world by ponies, society fails if they forget great works, this is the most disappointed in society since reading comments from people watching LoEG who didn't know the characters and references

  • @ILoveMattPriceClub You...By the gods you're ignorant. Think of it like this: Not everyone knows of "Into The Woods," Because not everyone is musically or theatrically inclined or knowledgeable. And if it reminds people who do know of this work, then that is a homage and not an insult. "At The Gala" would also provide a link of interest to the younger generations and make them want to watch this.

In short, get your head out of your ass, both are well done and should be appreciated.

  • @Shugo324 I'm not disrespecting the ponies, the fact people are growing up and only learning of classic stage works like IttW by watching shows like MLP is a problem. At least the creators of MLP were knowledgeable to give it a homage but too many people grow up today not being taught of the truly great works of the past

  • @ILoveMattPriceClub Not everyone has the driving force or motivation to find it, if that's the case. Say someone grew up with someone who thought musicals were pointless. I'm saying that if MLP can bring people to this work, then that's a step forward and may spark people's interest in musical works like this. Not everyone finds things out immediately, it all just takes time and a hint in the right direction.

  • @ILoveMattPriceClub What's LoEG? And I don't think it's a failing that Ponies has reminded people of great works, I mean I'd heard of Sondheim before but not this, now I know and what to find more. It may even become a new favourite, so through Ponies I have learnt something new and fun, just because you knew about it doesn't mean the whole world needs to, or should. I have great fun telling people who don't know about Avenue Q. So no, society will not fail, ponies will prevent it, with homages!

  • @Vampiratelycan LOEG is the abbreviation for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a graphic novel series and a film, that combines literary characters into a connective universe, where sadly many people don't recognize names like Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Professor Moriarty, etc. it is quite sad too many people don't know about it, thankfully the ponies can help people discover it but IMO education needs to introduce people to great works more than currently does

  • I'm playing the Witch in this musical; it opens tomorrow!!! I'm SO excited

  • ponies

  • Okay, I like ponies just as much as the next person, and I loved that they paid tribute to Sondheim, it was very well done and very clever...but seriously...this version is infinitely better. Not just because its original, but the depth of this show. If you watch the whole thing it's very deep and has a lot of great messages about life and what "happily ever after" really means. The ponies just can't compare to that.

Besides, this version has Bernadette Peters. All other arguments are invalid.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Oh my gosh you don't know how much I agree with you!!!! I just had my callback for the "Into the Woods" yesterday and I've been listening to the music all day. It's really great. And I love Bernadette Peters! -Elizabeth

Ps. I love your username too :)

  • @TheElizabethMusic Oh, that's so exciting! Break a leg! ^^

Bernadette is just flawless lol, I love her! And thanks, I like my username too. XDXD

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Thanks! I'm hoping for Baker's Wife or Cinderella. Happy thanksgiving! -Elizabeth

  • @TheElizabethMusic Both are awesome roles! (Personally I'd want to play the Witch, if I had the talent lol).

  • @WickedWitchElphaba I love the witch as well :) She is such an awesome character, and I love the songs she sings...however, I think I'm too "dainty" to be the witch, LOL. (And I'm just not as awesome as Bernadette Peters!)

  • @TheElizabethMusic Very few people are as awesome as Bernadette. XDXD I know I could never pull off the Witch...I just don't have that power in my voice

  • @WickedWitchElphaba true, true. yeah the songs are hard :P also what is this thing with the ponies?? I guess I wasn't much of a My Little Pony fan when I was little..

  • @TheElizabethMusic Oh, well, there's a new tv series called My Little Pony- Friendship is Magic. And it's actually not a bad show, it's pretty clever. And in one episode they had a song called At the Gala set to the tune of Ever After as a little nod to Sondheim, which was very well done and clever. And so now the Pony fans are discovering this musical...but for some reason most of them seem to think the pony version is better. which is ridiculous imho.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba ooh I understand now. But how could anything be better than the originial? :)

  • @TheElizabethMusic Well, sometimes adaptations or covers are better than the originals...and often it's just a matter of personal opinion.

But really, you can't compare a parody of a song on a children's cartoon to the original SONDHEIM. The only similarity between the songs is the melody. There's really now way to say that At the Gala is better than Ever After...the two just can't be compared. The sophistication and power of the original just doesn't exist in the ponies parody version.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba True, true. I just found out yesterday that I am the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods! WOOT!

  • @TheElizabethMusic COngrats! That's so awesome!!

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Thank you! I'm so excited...I hope I can be half as awesome as Joanna Gleason.

  • @TheElizabethMusic Hard to beat Joanna Gleason, lol. She was absolutely fabulous. XD

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Lol I know!!! Of course I don't want to beat her, I just want to be half as good as her

  • @TheElizabethMusic Lol, well you obviously earned the role for a reason, so I'm sure you'll do great.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Thanks so much! Our first read through is Tuesday and I'm so excited.

  • @TheElizabethMusic Lol, I bet!

  • @WickedWitchElphaba do you sing/perform as well?

  • @TheElizabethMusic I wish. No, I've never been talented enough...I can sing, but not that well. I was in choir, but I never got on stage. I was always behind the scenes, usually running the spotlights or building sets. Stuff like that. But now that I'm in college I'm a psych major. XD

  • @WickedWitchElphaba oh well it's still cool that you like to sing! :) Also, random question, but does the baker and the baker's wife have to kiss at the end of "It Takes Two" or is that just a director's choice?

  • @TheElizabethMusic Lol, I love singing...despite always being a little flat. o.O

Um...pretty much anything is a director's choice, even if it is written in the script, especially stuff like kisses. But usually they keep stuff like that in.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba

LOL sometimes it is pretty hard to stay on key!

And thanks, okay, I see. :)

  • @TheElizabethMusic I just have a hard time with it...but I'm okay if I'm singing in a group. XD

Yeah, that'll be your directors decision ultimately.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba well that's good :)) I take voice lessons..that really helps me!

And aaah, yeah I'm just really not looking forward to those kiss(es) :P

  • @TheElizabethMusic I'm sure it does. I just never had that passion for it...or the money. o.O

Well...I'm sure it's just a matter of really getting into the character. Just...pretend you're kissing someone else. XD

  • @WickedWitchElphaba yeah, it does take a lot of time (to practice) and it sometimes costs a lot!

And I'm working on it mentally..I'm still in high school and I've never kissed anyone before so we'll see how it goes :P

  • @TheElizabethMusic Yup...a lot of people from my school had voice teachers though. It just wasn't something that ever crossed my mind. Singing was something I did for fun, it was never a passion. That's why I'm a psych major lol XD

Oh high school, how I do not miss thee. I guarantee you there will be immature giggling at first, but you'll get past it as it gets closer to show time. ^^

  • @WickedWitchElphaba yeah...high school SUCKS. I can't wait till college!

  • @TheElizabethMusic College is pretty awesome, but you really gotta work at it.

  • @WickedWitchElphaba Working hard in college doesn't always work out. The institutions have different teaching styles, and simply working hard won't always make up for the difference.

  • @CraftingPansy Okay, who the hell are you? Of course different instructors have different teaching styles. DUH. But using that as an excuse to why you dropped out or failed a class is pretty pathetic. Hard work and adapting to the instructor's style, or at the very least going to office hours, WILL make up the difference for anyone motivated enough to complete the course.

  • Okay, I admit I'm a fan of Pony, but I'd at least heard of Stephen Sondheim LONG before that. However, I'd never really sat down and listened to most of his music until learning that Ingram was "inspired" by him, so I wanted to hear the originals. Just lovely. Ingram certainly ripped off a great source.

At the very least I ought to thank Dan Ingram for introducing me and many others to Sondheim. Most of us probably wouldn't have given this a second look otherwise. Now I wanna see this musical.

  • The only thing I don't like about the My Little Pony fans who are commenting here is the fact that they are acting as if My Little Pony put Sondheim on the map. I mean, I LOVE My Little Pony don't get me wrong...but I personally don't think that people should be raising up the idea that MLP and such are putting these musicals and what not on the map.

Although, I will say...MLP does have some great musical taste...considering that this is their SECOND Sondheim cover! :3

  • @TheMusicmanMB May I ask what is first cover they made, I mean, of which song?

  • @TheMusicmanMB What was the -first-??? Hold on, I've got to see if I can figure this out myself. Hmmm. >: S

And as far as the map thing goes, I agree. I came here from "at the gala" after a comment I saw, and am thankful for being introduced to Sondheim by it! While MLP didn't put them on the map, we can be hopeful and thankful it can help introduce people to this work of art.

Such are the gentle swayings of culture's fickle fancy!

  • @TheMusicmanMB What's their first one?

  • @Vampiratelycan watch?v=-836TtoF_5I Putting it together

  • Oh, wow, he practically stole the main melody and musical ideas!! Not saying that detracts from it, it's an epic song either way. Just wow O_O Not even a Jimmy Hart version. Surprised they didn't get sued or anything.

  • Trollllllllllllalalalalalalalalal troll.

  • After hearing this song on MLP, I came here to compare the songs and in the comments I see all of my fellow bronies!

  • For those of you getting upset with the MLP fans commenting, consider it flattery. This has been my favorite play for nearly a year, since my best friend showed it to me, long before My Little Pony did the "At the Gala" tribute.

A lot of people discovered the play after, and it brought new fans to Into the Woods. But a lot are also like my best friend and I, who loved the play already, and were reminded of it and had to watch it again after the Grand Galloping Gala ended.

    So chill out, 'kay? <3

  • AT THE GALA, IN THE GARDEN, I'M GOING TO SEE THEM ALL, ALL THE CREATURES, I'LL BEFRIEND THEM AT THE GALA..ALL THE BIRDIES, AND THE CRITTERS, THEY WILL LOVE ME BIG AND SMALL, WE'LL BECOME GOOD FRIENDS FOREVER, RIGHT HERE AT THE GALA!

  • Pony

  • honestly i didnt know about this before the my little pony thing (The south park brodway bro-down episode helped too( Although I dont know how accurate that was at portraying sondheim)

Anyways keep my little pony on my little pony. No need to put every reference to it on the orignal.

  • I have come to realise that my bashing the ponies was wrong and I apologise, I kind if forgot about the whole everyone is entitled to their own opinion thing... it happens...

  • @TheSoulMan8 It's the internet, frankly if anyone gets pissed at you for bashing a TV show, they need a solid pipe to the skull.

  • You know you just made a SHITTY comment when you are the UPLOADER of the video and your OWN COMMENT get's marked as SPAM

  • The ponies are honestly better. Listen to them both before you disagree.

  • All ya bronies out there stop commenting that Ponies or Friendship is magic brought you here, It's kinda annoying, and all of you sondheim fans stop getting mad at them they're just overly excited fans, can't you all get along?

  • guess what.

someone was HERE BEFORE ANTHROPOMORPHIC HORSES BROUGHT ME HERE

i'm here because i' *gasp* a broadway fan, especially sondheim

    PRESERVE SONDHEIM

  • Everyone calm down. No one's forcing you to like ponies.

  • @EdwardCullen667 lol. I can judge too, if you so please. I loved Into the Woods much before MLP:FiM, but I happen to enjoy both. I know very well that Into the Woods is a much more sophisticated, etc etc (whatever adjectives you want) piece of work, but I don't need to be lectured on art appreciation by someone named "Edward Cullen". Don't really need the irony, but thanks.

  • @TheSoulMan8 Have you LOOKED UP the song? Geez, criticize AFTER you see the thing you are criticizing! What is wrong with you, what kind of artist appreciator are you?

  • @TheSoulMan8 That and Sondheim had to allow MLP to make the spin-off.

  • @nintendude0701 This isn't necesarrily true. Covers have to be allowed by the original artist, parody does not.

  • @TheSoulMan8 It's not that they are more popular, there was just a dedication made to this song in the show. I'd say that's a cool thing that this has reached a fame level for it to be imitated. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery I say. South Park also did a dedication as well just the other night. If MY Little Pony or South Park or some other random television show can bring people to be interested in works of broadway then I say bravo.

  • @EdwardCullen667 Woah man, the least you could do is is give the show a try. I mean, if it pays homage to Sondheim, it can't be that bad, can it?

  • @EdwardCullen667 Well I am a fan of both. I love Sondheim's work and this play especially... been cast as the Narrator in my high school thespian production actually I love Friendship is Magic for being a smart good kids show. I admit I thought it would suck but... don't judge a book by its cover exists for a reason. It's actually worth a viewing. But yeah I do wish this show and this musical were more recognized... but yeah the Gala song is obviously Ever After. Kind of cool I say.

  • @EdwardCullen667

    You seem upset :l

  • @EdwardCullen667 a Twilight related name though... delicious irony.

  • @EdwardCullen667

Yeah cause that makes you sound so much better saying it like that -.-'

Sorry to say but nowadays animation is more popular then musical Broadway shows.

And MLP happened to be a wonderful show with great singing.

Welcome to Earth were culture is ever changing.

(Also this song is pretty good for Broadway music.)

  • @EdwardCullen667 Cool story bro.

  • @EdwardCullen667 Would you perhaps like me to start ranting about Twilight, and all the faggoty ass fans who read it because they're stupid? People run into truly great works in stupid ways, like commercials. The fact is that musicals are a niche genre, and the show is bringing attention back to classics like Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George. Perhaps instead of complaining you should appreciate the lovingly crafted tributes that hundreds of people worked on.

  • @EdwardCullen667 It's not so much that they prefer the pony version over the other, they are just more familiar with it and aware of the context. It's simply that My Little Pony did a dedication through parody of this song. South Park did another one just the other night as well. It's a good thing that this work has reached a point of popularity where it is being imitated, if some random TV show can bring people to appreciate a work of art that wouldn't otherwise, then all for the better I say.

  • @EdwardCullen667 u mad?

  • @EdwardCullen667 It's because the show contains an homage to this song. In fact, the comments show that the show is actually introducing people to Into the Woods who would otherwise not know about it.

  • y no rainbow dash part?? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • @TheSoulMan8

    HOW ABOUT NO!

  • @TheSoulMan8

    I agree.

  • To meet

    To sell

    To find

    To prove

    To woot

    To talk

    Into the Gala!

  • OH GOD PONIES

  • 0:24 he's off timing

  • @nunya990 No he's not. It's written that way in the sheet music.

  • @MainstagerDR well in the new version the ''after" was waited a whole beat on if you understand plz reply but if you dont then dont

  • @nunya990

Well the "new version" is an adaptation. This is the original, so I think it has a better claim to their rhythmic choices.

  • Thumbs up if you came here without ponies on the mind.

*Gives own comment a thumbs down*

  • in the gala
