I love Lucia Micarelli and love hearing more from her. Thanks for posting. Still, I think it's a shame that they have her singing when she's such a fabulous violinist -- though her singing is getting quite good.
This song is emblematic of the pretension that saturates this overrated program. 2 episodes before, the Earle's character and Annie the Dweeb prattle on and on about how one of her compositions sounds in passing like Dylan's Don't Think Twice. But suddenly Earle's keen sense of musical history abandons him when he -- and no one else -- acknowledges that 'After Mardi Gras' directly rips off Dylan's Simple Twist of Fate. Be consistent people!! This show never fails to irritate.
@nilradem you missed the point. It's fine to borrow from or reinvent other songwriters' material. Happens all the time. But the show made a ridiculously big commotion about how Annie's first songwriting effort bordered on plagiarizing one Dylan song yet that standard or concern somehow vanishes when the next song she writes is even a bigger rip-off of Dylan composition. THe show poses as if it has some unique insight into artistic creativity yet it fails miserably more times than its right.
"After Mardi Gras" is in no way directly ripping off Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate." They may share SOME cadences but the chords are different, especially between the verses. How can you relate a Dylan song that is written entirely in a major key, and a song whose verse is in a minor key.
@iiianggg The verse has nothing to do with it. The video above starts with them rehearsing the chorus and clearly the chorus is the focal point of the song -- what the viewer is supposed to drawn to. The 2 songs are in a different key, but the chord progression in the After Mardi Gras chorus indisputably matches that of the chord progression in 'Fate'.
The verse has everything to do with it, that's what sets the two songs apart, as well as the lyrics. Songs are going to match up, I'm sure there are scores of other songs that follow this progression. Dylan also puts a little turnaround at the end where he actually says "brought on by a simple twist of fate" that is not in "After Mardi Gras. Man has been making music for thousands of years, 12 tones, it's only probable that some will sound similar.
@iiianggg What are you talking about? Again, to make my point, borrowing or reinventing other songwriters material happens all the time. I get that. But in an earlier episode the show went ass-over-tit to point out how her very first composition was unusable because of a 3-chord sequence that copied Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice'. The similarity between those 2 songs was much harder to detect than this obvious, blatant forgery of 'Fate'.
The Beatles' "Cry Baby Cry" follows this progression. Neil Young's "Motion Pictures" follows this progression. It is a very popular set of chords because of it's melancholy feeling. Are all jazz players plagiarizers because the ii-V-I progression can be found in almost any jazz composition?
@iiianggg You must be joking...you're comparing the a fundamental building block of jazz to the chord progression in 'Fate'? Am I saying that it is the only song to use its chord sequence? No--but it's unique enough to know when being copied. It certainly is more singular than the progression that defines 'Don't Think Twice'...yet using a sequence in 'Twice' was treated as a severe breach of songwriting etiquette. I use 'Fate' primarily because another Dylan song was identified a prior show.
@DrJamesX Here's something I took from an interview with Steve Earle, the guy who played Harley -
Interviewer: I got an interesting email from a reader wondering if the song isn’t a play on Annie’s first composition, borrowed from Bob Dylan. He said the chord changes for the verse are the same as “All Along the Watchtower,” and that the changes for the bridge are “Simple Twist of Fate.”
Steve Earle: The fact of the matter is, there’s only so many notes. I’ll tell you one thing that everybody kind of missed is that the chords are most similar to “Sunny Came Home,” Shawn Colvin’s song. The melody’s not anything like that.
Trust me, when you take too much from something else, you usually get sued. I haven’t been sued yet, not even close. I got paid some money when somebody got too close to one of my songs, and I didn’t even ask for it.
Pure magic. Couldn't find it on iTunes either. I searched both "Lucia Micarelli" and "Treme Season 2." What a lovely, enchanting song. Been going through my head all week. Thanks for uploading it.
She has to be hands down my favorite character on Treme and I loved this song as soon as I heard it- and I must say I can't wait to hear what will come next :D

So did you love this song the first time you heard it on Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album? If not, try the original and far superior version of this song 'Simple Twist of Fate'
I really wish they'd release this as a song. I'm so IN LOVE with it. *sigh*

You seem to know something about pretension... and you realize how many melodies Dylan drew from old folk songs and other sources, right??
