Danny Gatton was fantastic. I don't care to say who was the greatest, he was a stellar player all the way. I adore to hear him playing and that's all that matters to me.

Danny started off as one of Roy's disciples, but before long Danny blew by him. When DG was at his peak, Roy couldn't hang with him - not even close. Johnny Hiland does not yet have the track record that Danny did, but give him time... he is the real deal... and don't forget that he sings, too...

These guys are truely genius,they are the cream of the pot studio country finger picking masters.But Johnny Hiland is my favorite,he plays it all.He rocks with Sammy Hagar,then has been the #1 first chair in Nashville studios for the past 10 years.I'm from PG county and Gatton you just had to see,technical,he is in a world of his own.If you lived in the dc area,you would know,Gatton was Roy Buchannon's#1 fan,Roy was the best ,Danny was always chaseing him,like Principato was chasing Gatton.

@sonoffrettkillr: You do mean "best country tele player ever," right? There's no best of anything... as Danny himself used to say, there's a lot of leaves at the top of a tree. Albert Lee has his thing, Brent Mason his, Reggie Young his, Vince Gill his unqiue style, Brad Paisley, too, etc. we could debate this for hours.... we have not even gotten into the older cats and their playing, such as Don Rich, Jimmy Bryant, Phil Baugh, Thumbs Carlisle, etc. - or Tele players in other styles of music.

@jarkre good point ; your right on and I agree 100% ; some people might think he is a gimmick like isn't he the guy who plays with the beer bottle, and towel, and pours beer on his guitar. Gatton is like W C Fields in comedy; if you understand these masters you realize they really are the greatest.
