First of all, this song is originally by Bon Iver, so you can't really compare the original singer with a cover, she wasn't trying to outdo the song, she just liked it and made her own version. Secondly, people stop saying that Birdy is talentless and stuff like that. Again, SHE IS NOT TRYING TO OUTDO THE REAL ARTIST!! If you don't like her version don't listen to it, I personally prefer it but it's my opinion...

I think the difference is context. The original writer of the song only knows it's true meaning and can convey what he or she intended. When someone covers the song, they play the notes, sing the lyrics, maybe even have their own emotion to the song, but it's not the same, nor can it ever be. This is the difference between Bon Iver's original and Birdy's cover.
