  • damn I love the way those nasty b3 chords and the way they vibrate along each other, focking funky

  • the bass guitar feels like im flowing in cold water and having the best time of my life!

  • i need a porno.

  • Ya you may be right about that. But their doing well for sure.........they don't worry about money. Tell me about this camp in New York. It sounds awesome.

  • I love woods faces :D

  • It's definitely a Big Time! Very groovy!

  • muy buen trio , very good

  • love the bass

  • ça groove trop ! si t'aimes pas, t'as rien compris

  • is this song theirs? i looked it up on my pirate downloaded discography and there is no studio version of this song. It never crossed my mind because this piece here is full of magic

  • @rootsradicals87 This track is from the Dropper-a very funky avante garde album, which was released in 2000, studio version is much shorter, only 3:23 long.

  • @rootsradicals87

there is an album version...afraid I cant think of it off the top of my head...but its out there.

  • @goldteefforerbody the album version is called big time, and its off the album "The Dropper" afraid i like this version better though, i just really like the intro.

  • well it seems that someone came 5 days ago

  • I just came

  • Redban !!!

  • 2:21

  • = Baby Making Music

  • = Baby Making Music

  • what sounds better than a rhodes and a b3?

john medeski playing them at the same time.

  • Its a Wurlitzer and a B3. Sorry had to.. but you're right.

  • @FunkDoctor49 that's not a rhodes or a b3........it's a Wurlitzer 200 ELP and Hammond C3 (although a C3 is a B3 with a different cabinet)

  • @Deltarogers The Wurlitzer actually has an awesome feel to it since it uses hammers on steel reeds to produce the sound which tends to be warmer than Rhodes. Cheers :)

  • coooooool ... very cooooooooolllllll

  • that breakdown at the end is very reminiscent of pink floyd's "interstellar overdrive" back in the syd barrett era. i'll bet these fellows are big fans of the early psychedelic stuff from Britain in the late 60's.

  • @redape6870 good my man.

  • Bravo. A brilliant performance, much praise for Billy Martin, such an emotional yet refined style. MMW defines musicianship, within and beyond the boundaries of rock and jazz

  • @btfink This is a part of their Umbria Jazz Festival appearance. If you sniff around You should find it somwhere :)

  • someone has to have the full video of this set - if they do......they should message me

  • 16 people are justin bieber fans

  • @slidez11 and huge cocksucking fags 2!

  • yeaaa

  • hey whats that in billys pocket, oh wait a minute.........

  • what peddle is the bassist using, and the keyboard? why are you so obsessed with peddles? it's really upsetting me now, dont go on about peddles all the time. : (

  • What year was this??? MMW are the ELP of the 21st Century, Actually they are in their own category.

  • 16 people love the cock really hard

  • Great! Death to MIDI.

  • @Pur11zz you can get all this sound and a whole lot more with MIDI, my band has just one person in it, and I play everything from the keyboard in my bedroom

  • this stuff 's gonna crunch your brain...baby!

  • Chris Wood. F*cking bad ass tone!!!!!!

  • doctor medeski ftw.

  • so damn funkaaaay...somebody lite a match...

  • Hammond, Clav, Wurly, Farfisa, Vox, and is that a Mellotron??

This is all electromechanical, and all legit!

  • @dhpcraptor ,

Yes, that is in fact a Mellotron. And they tour with that bad mamma jamma!

  • the only way this would be better is if frank gambale played guitar with them

  • @rocketman676 or john scofield perhaps?

  • @rollerblaker

i like scofield, but i find his phrasing both intriguing and lacking at the same time. imo.

frank never ceases to amaze me.

although i love everything scofield did with them, especially at the north sea jazz fest.

  • @rocketman676 yeh man I totally agree with all that stuff, especially the north sea jazz festival, which I of course attended.

  • John medeski makes me cry.

  • Medeski Martin & Wood big time

  • claassss!

  • hands which fly..

  • jaw dropping...

anyone care to name all the keyboards medeski is using here?

  • @pacoalbisua hes using the hamond b3, the clavinet d6 on top, a mellotron, a wurlitzer, the other two i dont know, i think its a 1/3 stage piano but i dont know the brand, and the one on top of the wurlitzer is the otherone i dont know, but in the vids of this show hes not using it.

  • @negritus hey, great!!! thanks a lot!

  • Comment removed

  • @pacoalbisua

    Wurlitzer 200A Electric Piano

    Hammond B3

    Hohner D6 Clavinet

    Farfisa Compact Combo

    Mellotron

    Stage piano (probably Steinway)

  • Martin is such a good drummer !!!!!!

  • grooving in the pocket!!

    this guys are genius!

  • one of the best live shows ever

  • I saw them live once back around 92ish. They opened for Phish.

Saw them again at Austin City Limits 09 and they were just as great, if not better. Still an amazing live band.

  • Damn, life is so incredible... I met John Medeski in 1991 or 1992, i was a teenager and he gave some lessons in great workshops (south of France)

    Totally FREE ! Wonderful !

  • cool

  • superchingones

  • wow

  • jesus.... thats about as tight as a drummer and bass can get 3:06

    mesmerizing

  • I'm thinking about all those outstanding artists that can go as far as the human being allows in speed and technique but lack of musical "good taste"

I listen to this and rethink... virtuosity CAN sound good!! and how good!!

  • Well, I think the label virtuoso should imply taste as well. Thats how I personally define it, but sadly there are a great many "virtousi" out there that don't even know how to spell taste...I think it slightly depends on the musical genre they sit themselves in, but I do my best to generalize a little as possible so I will just let that issue sit.

When I listen to these guys, I go into a trance of tranquility and pure unadulterated joy.

  • I can hear echos of pioneer albums like Miles Davis´ "In a Silent Way" in their sound.

    They´re very talented musicians.

  • When do these guys join up with Jeff Beck?

  • is this a song, a drug, or both?

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not a big fan of the whole jam band concept, but there's no denying that these guys are monsters when it comes to music.

  • Does anyone know any other bands like MMW??

    These dudes are pioneers!

  • maybe elephant 9

  • Worldwide Zoo, inexperienced but talented; E.S.T. reminiscent of their mmw's youth; gotta checkout Skerik

  • A band called Galactic is similar in my opinion, not quite as jazzy, but definitely worth checking out.

  • Good Lord yes. Stanton Moore and Billy Martin set quite a similar feel now that you mention it. So good. Good call.

  • Go back in time and check out one of their biggest influences - the Funky Meters!

  • Comment removed

  • These guys are the most underappreciated act out there. Listening to them is better than smoking bud- no joke.

  • a combination of the two is ideal. some fungal friends will seal the deal, though.

  • I would say considering all the great instrumental acts out there, all the monster jazz musicians who are just scraping by.... these guys are among the most appreciated. All 3 are millionaires. They deserve it .......their killin' !

  • Comment removed

  • how do you know?

  • Comment removed

  • @MattFinstein are they really?? god i hope so.

  • @MattFinstein haha i wish they were millionaires, they rlly do deserve it, i know when they tour nowadays they have a personal chef with them since back in the day they would sleep on ppl's floors so maybe its about what they put they're money towards but when i had the amazing opportunity to attend their camp in new york state they're cars weren't exactly mercede benzes.....

  • almost

  • Then do both!

  • thats so intense i seriously feel like that is the farthest a band can go on a doors format.

  • nonsense poopypants! you can always go further (mmw is ahead of their time though..., might take a few years)

  • Note Bleu, their greatest hits release on Blue Note , has a really good DVD which has a French documentary of this period called The Dropper. Also has some music videos and live shows included. If you like these guys, buy it. It's well worth the money.

  • This was the first DVD I ever owned and is my fave period for MMW. The Dropper is just plain sick!

  • Never knew they had a dvd ... could you give some info or know if I can purchase and from where? THANKS!

  • so many tubes!

    awesome tones and awesome music.

found this in a thread at talkbass

  • I was actually listening to them for the first time here, thinking "What da fuck are all these dudes here all hyped about?". Until they touched that free, avande garde minute...

    Very unique for today...

Off to download some of their stuff...

  • nothing it's better than listening to this while i smoke a giant Joint

  • LOL hahaha i total agree with you man! Did the same right now!

    PEACEaaaiii

  • i'm in the same

  • @santico666 dont take drugs santico, as its not good for you, try and enjoy the music without it next time

  • @santico666 exactly

  • it has fretts

  • Oh, and is this available on DVD?

  • What kind of bass is Chris Wood playing here? My best guess is it's a fretless p-bass. One of the thickest tones I've heard!

  • Fretted P-Bass of vintage origin. Looks like a white one that has 'aged' from all of that barroom smoke. I have a J-Bass that did the same thing. Don't discount the Ampeg. It's got a lot to do with it.

  • so unbelievable.

  • this made me take the funkiest shit ever in my pants. i had to get up and dance around with my funky ass shit pants on so that I could spread that rank funk aroma around.

  • @SonOfSconnie40s hahahaha! niceeee

  • @SonOfSconnie40s Smelling the funk. This guys knows what's up. Waft that shizz sonion.

  • @SonOfSconnie40s

did this really happen? and then you want to tell everyone about it! have the pants been washed yet? as you posted this 1 year ago

  • @isleoforkney yes. yes, and no. i hung the poo pants on my wall next to the shorts I crapped in while I was listening to the brecker brothers.

  • @SonOfSconnie40s still hung up on the wall after all this time, to show your appreciation? That is cool. I am very elderly and am doubly incontinent, so can easily show my appreciation to all types of music, playing or not. The nurse tells me when I've done it. the rank funk aroma never leaves me! ah what a life! : 0

  • OMG! I couldn't find the song i was looking for, i was looking for some rock song, but i LOVE FUNK and this is CRAZY FUNKY! I love it!!!

  • phuck yes. ughhhhhh i wish i was them

  • It's like Soft Machine in the sixties.

  • great band. they're so amazing live. a computer screen just doesn't do them justice.

  • Grooves like this are so deep, I can feel the funk rearranging my very molecules. Must... bob... head... cannot... control... neck muscles...

  • I can't wait to see Medeski at the Roxy in Hollywood march 21 with Will Bernard.we want the funk

  • your groove is tearing apart my insides

  • amazing as usual!

    Go MMW!

  • Imagine seeing them open for Morphine. AWESOME SHOW! About 96-97.

  • i came.

  • i love his bass

  • way too deep why I love MMW

  • love 'em. every time.

  • merories....memories.... trip

  • what the funk?

  • haha

  • que zapaaaadoo el tecladistaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

  • they´re playing tonight in my lovely Buenos Aires and i got seat number 7!!!!!

    life is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttt

    funk tha world

  • yo estaba en el pullman, me fui desde mendoza solo para verlos.

    tuvo petacular. saludos.

  • so good...

  • one more thing.....Medesk alwaysi has the sickest tone.

  • ... unless he's playing a detuned Wurlitzer, then you get a headache after about 30 min

  • Masters of the groove.

  • ¡Que ritmo tan rico !

  • wow very very nice.

  • What's the Fender Rhodes going through?

  • It's a Wurli not a Rhodes and I have no idea. I think he's running through a Pure Goodness Filter.

  • The Wurlitzer is running through an envelope follower low-pass filter, followed by a distortion box. Any brands will do it. I used to have a Electro-Harmonix Doctor Q and MXR DistortionPlus that I used with my Model 200. Or my flute, for a really sick sound... If you put the distortion before the filter, it sounds more like a synthesizer.

  • there's no rhodes, it's a wurly

  • sooo better

  • soo good

  • I like these guys! That bassist reminds me of John Patitucci in how he gets so into the music :)

  • Land Of 10,000 Lakes Festival 2008!!! WOOT!!!!

    ~peace Tom

  • Fantastic. I hope to see them in Montreal soon. 'been a while ...

  • sometimes i find there is fleck flicking my hammond organ, but then i ask for an harmonica donation ansd you say whether the storm, well, be my fried cajun popeil

  • wow if i had wanted to see conann o'brien's timing i could have just listened to the world's most dangerous band

  • Medeski is a genius with the keyboards. He knows a Hammond, period.

  • Funking brilliant!!

  • ahhhh it feeels sooo gooood.

  • Awesome!

I want to be in a band like this... :-)

    (I play bass.)

  • amazing!!

  • just downloaded some of their songs on limewire, i love it, great stuff.

  • if you love it and it's such great stuff, how about you actually buy the music so you can support the artists....

  • No, they don't own their own music. Support the them by going to the shows or buying their apparel, two things that they do actually own; they're off blue note now so it's ok.

  • actually, if you do the research, your money supports the record label. not so much the artists. see, the record label loans the artists money to make the album. that's why most of the money never sees the artists' hands.

a much more practical suggestion would've been to write mmw a letter thanking them for making beautiful music, or supporting them by attending their live performances.

  • i am going to see MMW in israel toniiiiiiiiiiight anyone else coming :)

  • i cant hear the bass in any song..

  • really? cuz you can hear it pretty easily in this one.

  • its always good

  • I love their fusion of jazz and funk - it's relaly nice, very improvisational yet very technical at the same time

  • These guys are pure genius... such a good original sound.

  • the best video of mmw
