  • @eabffe My point is that Petra was built by locals. Greeks were there early true. but thats all I will cede.as for the word, i'm not going to split hairs w/you. even if its a rock we are talking about. LOL

    peace

  • Wonderful PETRA!!!!!!

  • So do you guys believe this was built by human?

  • Besides... There were other civilization back then that weren't recorded by the Greeks before. Perhaps during a time when the Greeks would only record influentially political, military, or economically powerful civilizations. Perhaps civilizations with culture weren't practically their thing or perhaps off reach. The Moabites are an ancient peoples mentioned in the bible that weren't recorded by the greeks! The Aztecs, Mayans, and other Civilzations like China weren't Recorded by the Greeks.

  • Geeze louise, Just cause it's named Petra don't mean it was made by the Greeks. Other civilzations have carved rocks in ways we don't even know how they did! In fact, the civilizations then are probably the same with the one now if i were to coin out the term "Cultural Influence". Like our civization today, the intermingling of many international cultures have made caused foreign influence in many local cultures. The same could be said in your "Petra". The place was perhaps architecturally copyd

  • Petra is a greek word(crack in the rock)......thats all.

It was built by the nabateans way before the greeks even discovered it.Egyptians also recorded the location. Many towns and even people(cristos-the christ) were named so b/c it was the greeks who documented them. As many cities/landmarks in Egypt have greek names .. Greek lang. was the language of education. Like latin would later be in Europe. Petra was not a Greek city. .......

    peace

  • @translationwiz petra means "crack in the rock"? doesnt it just mean rock?

  • @JayBrew391 Perhaps.......it depends on context and variance of the language. IF you split up the word.....Pe-tra........it means "You can see"- in some semetic dialects. It also means exposed.......But for the context used by the historians, referring to this location...it means the crack in the rock. Personally, historical terms over time get mistranslated&parts or whole meanings are lost. But I dont want to go down that ave..LOL. LEts rely on the accepted meaning of the historians.

    peace
