During the Hitler era in Germany, Richard Strauss was appraoched with a request to write new music for "Midsummer Night's dream."

He decline rather emphatically, stating that no one could improve on Mendelssohn's.

He was quite correct.

I recently played this piece with an amazing orchestra at a chamber music camp, and wow, I can't believe that we could play it, especially the Scherzo. I love the donkey-ish part at the end-ish. It was alot of fun! To whoever is going to play this, have the funnest time that you possibly can. It's quite amazing =]

There is a movie version of the Shakespeare play starring Kevin Kline as Bottom, Rupert Everett as Oberon and Michelle Pfeiffer as Tatania that uses this music throughout - quite a magical combination in my opinion.
