Originally, the title Czar (derived from Caesar) meant Emperor in the European medieval sense of the term, that is, a ruler who claims the same rank as a Roman emperor, with the approval of another emperor or a supreme ecclesiastical official (the Pope or the Ecumenical Patriarch).
i feel that the american companies are trying only 2 things. copying the japanese, and going retro. like farah said, we need to go back to making the cutting edge cars of the future. Whether they are big, or small, they need to be american and they need to be reliable. my name is Micah, and i am 16. My dream, and reality, is to start my own american car company that will give us our faith in the auto business again, and will be unique.
The unions HAVE to go. It is an outdated system that has caused the quality of American cars to suffer for many, many, years. The big 3 want to keep the 'passion' that I feel MOST foreign makes have lost and implanted into the US minds (Priuis, Kia, etc...). However, with the unions always forcing the big 3 to fall to their knees, they will never be able to push ahead and promote that 'passion' which has been slowly going away from America's streets.
Why do retards ALWAYS given management a pass? Oh yeah, your Republican master tell you what to think and you just swallow all that corporate jesus bullshit.
its very simple... You need to have someone that will tell the auto makers that they need to start to produce quality products even if it means the cost of the cars goes up. They also need someone that will say that the money must be repayed. If it is not then the companies will sink. I think the car companies will get kicked in the but and wake up to keep in business.
two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue. The clown statue is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this to 10 videos today, the clown will be in your bed at 3 am with a chainsaw in his hand
My rule is the Power of product VETO. every new car the Zarr gets to test and change or kill any thing that would prevent us from getting our money back.
look american car makers cant make a good interior because american cars are cheap.... if you compare the price of an american car whit a basic renault our a citroen it would set you back more money so its normal the interior sucks :P
Totally untrue. Even more expensive American cars have had sub-par interiors. Cadillac is getting better but is still no match for a similarly priced Audi.
Look your being sptupid because european cars a less expensive in de USA than in Europe... so the equivelant american car is always cheaper so its normal that the intirior is CRAP. The US is the cheapest place to buy a car...
my rule is not to build a car just to fill a gap in a production line. we dont need small suv, mid size suv, regular suv, and a large suv from the same damn company. car companies should try to build a wide range of cars yes but not that wide. they should try to specialize in one area. what happens is they make all these cars to fit markets and they all suck. if they only competed in one or two classes, companies could make one or two really good cars
what the f happen to the dodge ram srt 10? i say bring that back and blend it with the 09 and u know how fast that sell? new price for 1 of them back in the day(8-9ish years ago) was near 45 thou the new dodge ram is for the sport pack is about 44 thou and no viper 5oo hp 522 ft lbs, 500 watt stereo system really? i got a 95 dodge ram 1500 5.9 liter and it still running ill bet give the 09 3 years and it be dead while my truck still going strong, why don't the japo and ero come here? just a idea
great show, i completely agree with you. car manufacturers need to remember that cars need to not only be fast, economical, practical, etc but that they need to have passion, soul, and be fun as well.
the chevy volt is a hybrid because it still has a gas engine. so are you saying electric is the way to go? the best electric car right now goes 250 miles max on one charge. great for daily commutes but what about long distance travel. e-85 is still part gasoline and you can convert a regular engine to run it. it could also be distributed to the east and west coast. hydrogen would be the next best but its even harder to make and distribute.
I would keep the cars that are uniquely american like the Corvette the pick up truck ,the Jeep or even the big suv but make them better by design. Bring european and asian cars made by the subsidiaries and also focus on development of the new golden era of US made cars. Ayen
the alternate fuel is what will determine what type of cars are made in the future. i honestly think that e-85 is a step in the right direction but not a solution. in order for the hydrogen market to be popular they have to start out in the sport world and optimize from there. what toyota is doing with the prius is backwards. they should have made a sport car hybrid first because it would be much more interesting therefore increasing popularity.
unless you live in the midwest... e85 will do nothing for you - hybrids will do NOTHING FOR YOU!
the only thing i see that will keep chevy afloat is the new chevy volt in what is it - 2010? (if not sooner) - 40 mpg with out fuel at all - thats the step the world is looking for - not some hybrid e85 - sure you can buy a hybrid e85 anywhere.... try finding a pump on the east or west coast to use it with is my point.
its like... clean coal... (psst...coal can never be clean!) thats y we have to make DRASTIC changes - - - - hopefully no one has bought off the car czar allready....
I know Steve Jobs is looking at retiring, and his health has been in question for the past year or so, but the fact is he is the reason Apple is what it is today. Take a second, go read the Wired Magazine's article about Jobs. There have been several stories about him making grown men cry. He's a bad ass. That is the kind of person that the auto industry needs. Matt was right when he said- no one knew they needed an iPod until Jobs said so. Jobs for car czar.
Your nuclear statement Matt is a long shot. Our country has banned any new nuclear power plants. Get those built first then worry about a hydrogen fuel economy. To many things needs to go into place BEFORE hydrogen cars can be the norm.
1 of MY Car Czar rules agrees with u - NO MORE SALES EVENT ADS.
* Sell the car [features] for at least promise me I'll get laid like the 501 Jeans & Axe commercials.
Matt & I agree with u on Hybrids & Hydrogen.
ALL sales are down new & used.
SUV biz is morphing to CUV. Will see if it's enough resizing. Toyota Venza is most car-like, IMO. BTW - 'Benza' in Japanese means toilet seat [Insert joke here.]
So yeah, SUV's Hummers and the such - are they going to get cut or not? I can see the big 3 cutting areas such as enine engeneering ect... but what the hell... why not cut the crap that cost the most to build - suv's ect... keep WHAT SELLS THE MOST and what is CHEAPEST TO BUILD!
America is the only country in the world that builds and sells huge ass gas hogs... that only get 1 mpg better every year.. lose the commercials for .. (continued)
Is anyone taking into concideration that more people are buying older used cars and trucks (mostly cars)?
Unless all the car companies make their vehicles lighter - they will keep sucking with gas. We have all the companies throwing "Hybrid" commercials at us.... NOTHING BEATS THE CHEVY VOLT.... Like the new escalades that are "HYBRIDS"? That makes no sense at all. BIG Vehicles are a big mistake.. they all have to go other than full size trucks for business.
I agree with looking to the future, rather than the past, for car designs.
I also think, and this is a small thing most audiophiles will appreciate, manufacturers should start using head units with RCA outs. It would make upgrading the rubbish they put in A LOT easier!!
Also, they should start making Xenon lights standard on all cars. They are brilliant!
exactly, the american auto manufacturer is 2 years behind and a penny short. they are so diconnected for who they think they are marketing for. a hybrid escalade? REALLY!? and all this retro car bs. wheres the new? take a cue from nissan gtr(new) 370z(new) and better in every way. they fixed everything that u could call a flaw with the 350. and i want one. its exactly what people want. the charger an obese under powered ugly thing. no one wants that. and there cars are all the same car. boring
Totally agree with you Matt! Where can I vote for you to be the car czar? Haha...
But really, right now it's sad. I'm 17 and there are very few American cars that I would actually want or be willing spend my money on someday. Instead I turn my eyes to import cars. I myself own a 1986 Toyota MR2 that has 112,000 miles and still runs great and love every bit of it. Decent gas mileage, decent power/acceleration, and comfortable/cool interior. That's how everything should be done.
Oh and "retro future" IS retarded... When I see an awesome futuristic concept at an auto show, I want to see it on the showroom floor within 2-3 years! Why build concepts if you aren't going to put them into production! "retro" is just a fancy word for OLD... Give us new stuff, and give it to us now. By the way. I think another rule should be that GPS should be standard in all cars, it's so cheap for them to put it in, the fact that it costs $300+ is ridiculous!
There are good things about Unions, but they are one of the main things driving the auto industry into the ground! The car companies are forced to pay people too much, and can't fire the people that need to be fired!
The car czar NEEDS to be someone like you! It needs to be someone who has a passion for cars, wants American cars to survive, but above all wants American cars to improve. The czar also needs to realize how much BS the prius is... Love Garage 419!!!
all cars should have individual platforms, or should i say an individual drivetrain. ok, i understand that sharing platforms save millions, but then it's just like driving the same damn car but in a different shell! for example... the lincoln mks, in the handling department the car is very similar to the taurus- which is tedious and boring. the mks should be a sport luxury sedan! like those of acura, lexus, honda and caddilac.
Lee Iacocca for car czar, he's been there and done this thing. I realize he's getting up there in his years, but nobody knows how to bail a car company out like Lee Iacocca.
Hydrogen? It's not ready, and don't forget it takes energy to produce it. Also, hydrogen cars are driven by electric motors, so electric first; unless you want to power ICEs with hydrogen, that's a different story.
Another, thing we gotta drop this US V. Them mentality. You know Toyota lost $1.7 billion in this market?
Allow me to both inflate and deflate your bubble before it bursts. Believe it or not hydrogen can power an internal combustion engine with only a few modifications. Problem is hydrogen generally requires electricity to create and an infrastructure to deliver. Nonetheless here is a 30 year old video of Jack Nicholson driving a hydrogen powered Chevrolet Caprice:
Hey, if the feds want to help GM Ford and Chrysler, why not give the money to the car buyers instead of the manufacturer. Five grand cash for buying a GM car would move them off the lots pretty quick.
I don't agree with you Farah on one of your points. Carmakers should continue recreating cars from the past. The new Mustang, the new Challenger, and the new Camaro are some of the best cars that the "Big Three" has to offer. Don't discourage them or you'll be left with nothing. And by the way, it's not as easy as you think to create a great looking car from scratch. I'm glad that at least we have those legendary cars from the 60's and 70's to get some inspiration from.
yes agreed but you cannot keep coming back to them, i mean look at the next years mustang it looks not all that different than the current model, i do however agree with you on the challenger and the camaro (lets face it every camaro the third and fourth generation up until this new one were butt ugly!)
Of course it's not easy to design a new car from scratch, but other car companies have no problem doing it. For the most part the Japanese and European companies don't bother with retro remakes, they design new cars. Even the SLR Mclaren Stirling Moss, which was designed as tribute to the original race car, looks nothing like the original car, save for a couple small cues.
i agree on the "department of the interior" the quality sucks but they need something more and its not only that, US carmakers need to have passion for detail. for example look at a citroën they are strange cars but the interior of all cars is diferent unique and has details like the controls or the lighting or compartments.. just details that make a car a betterplace to be without the need of fancy interior materials IMO
I would have less versions of the same car such as the corvette and mustang. It seems like every year there's a new corvette or mustang and they have very few differences from the one from the previous year. What I would do is have a standard version and a high performance version and nothing in between. Also release one every 5 or 6 years not every year.
i know what you guys are sayin about interiors lol. i was in a 2005 accord this morning, and the interior has a kind of high quality feel to it. all the knobs turn smoothly, and its actually good looking too. this is in a basic sedan here. later i got into a 2006 mustang, and it was all really really cheap feeling. looked horrible too. and this is supposed to be a sports car that ppl will pay extra for.
Jackson? Some very half-serious suggestions. If racing is the first thing to go, it's because it's a risky investment with little return. Conservatives are gonna be pissed when they hear tax $ are going towards motorsports. And the NSX was not a market success. the ZR1 is def a supercar, so GM is all set on that point.
GM's stock is so low, we could buy and OWN their asses for $4 bil. And we're loaning them how much?!
Hydrogen might be the future, but electric cars are ready NOW.
I wouldn't call a technology "ready" unless people can get in the car and drive cross country in a manner no less convenient than their current gasoline car. Long recharge times and short ranges pretty much eliminate electricity from being "ready" now. Additionally, fossil fuels must be burned to produce the electricity, so it's not really 100% clean like Hydrogen.
The vulger attack on Leo was uncool. (Just the right height to kiss my ass). If this was a pointless vlog with no viewership maybe it wouldn't matter, but you are the new media, act like it. Arrogance is entertainment poison.
I'd have each and every car go through a 24 hour race on a closed circut(similar to the Nurdburgring 24 except these cars are nearly "showroom stock" with only a roll cage, and racing seats) before they can release their cars so they can get every little detail perfect. If the car dosen't make it to the end they can't sell it and will have to find all the areas that had issues and race it next year.
Matt, the only way I can think of that this episode could have been any better, by getting more hits, would be if you had conducted the interview while driving a Subaru in a rally race, covered in honey & trying to put on a wet suit. But then, youd have to consider the safety issues of such a thing & I really want to see your next episode. So, with that in mind, I can see why you didn't do that & this episode was perfect & couldnt be improved upon. Great job! MATT FOR CAR CZAR!
Matt seems like a cool person to hang around yo, i agree with his ideas, i think we need more affordable, innovative, supercars forget going green because less than one tenth of a percent of the atmosphere has CO2. I'm all for the hydrogen idea because of it's abundance. I think ppl just want to see something new. I see all these wonderful concept cars but i hardly see any of the concept ideas applied to the production cars.
lol good list except number 8. you know how bad i wanted a gokart as a kid but just couldn't get the money for it. Your right though a Car Czar should be well versed and not another suit...which will probably happen anyway.
10 hours ago, you watched this show and commented. And here I am responding.... If you wanted to ask something to the editor of Road & Track, how long do you think it would take to get a response? How come every time a new magazine comes out I've known about its contents for weeks? I'd say so.... Although I still read it for the editorials.
The car industry is not being run by car guys and girls. It is run by suits and bean counters. Put enthusiasts back in charge and also go racing in modified production cars ( not nascar ) .
Matt you have my vote for CAR CZAR IF you add a number 11 rule. ALL engineers MUST FOLLOW the K.I.S.S principle so that Bubba and Joe can REPAIR their vehicles with A STANDARD SET OF HAND TOOLS. I personaly am so &*#!@# TIRED of BUSTING MY KNUCKLES WORKING ON THOSE CRAMPED ENGINE BAYS.
OH YEAH REAL TRUCKS HAVE V8S And SOLID AXLES, just my 2 cents
I would make car company have their cars more aerodynamic... Increases performance, fuel efficency, so makes it better for "The Planet" and also makes it more of a selling point for the companies!!
Car companies needa make more hot hatches with good diesel engines... Such as the Fabia vRS from Skoda, combines good performance again with decent MPG!!
The GM and Chrysler bailout is just postponing the inedible. I guarantee both companies are going to go bankrupt no matter what. People aren't going to buy GMs and Chryslers knowing they need money from the Government. What's the point of a warranty on your car if there is no company to back your warranty. This is why people won't buy cars from GM and Chrysler, knowing they are in trouble.
My first rule would be to stop shorten development time. There has got to be a way to get a quality car in production in less than 3 years from concept.
My second rule would be to stop advertising what's in the pipeline before it's ready for delivery. The Camaro, for example, has taken so long to reach the dealerships that it will almost be obsolete when we can finally buy one. Nothing should be announced until it is production ready so we can surprise the competition for a change!!!
why not have the idea of building a car like the iconic gtr, this vehycle is beautifull and fast. and yes the g8 its aaaa great car and this stupid people almost screwed up the car give it a frigging manual transmission, a poper transmission not that crap like in the ctsv allways making clinging noises, stuff you don see in a m5
No more light gray interiors. Stop redesigning the European/Australian counter parts of vehicles before they hit the US.(g8, closest thing they have done to not completely screwing it up, and it was still a visual downgrade).
I think you should be the czar. actually you have the only show in america that actually critizise the auto industry in the usa. all the other mags and shows only talk abouthow eficient the car can be or cheap to buy. they want to learn how to build better, more fun to drive automobiles, stop pretending you are the best. when detroid builds a car like the m3 civic gtr land rover land cruise golf r8, this are cars keep costumer coming back for more, not another buick.
THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU ... i agree with you completely, get someone smart in the auto industry , the apple analogy is brilliant ... the person in charge of the auto industry doesn't need to be an economist, he needs to be a forward thinking designer who can push these idiot companies to build me a car that i can drive with pride... disgrace all of top gears comments about america and make them want to come here to get a piece of what we got
Great show, now it just has to get to CNN, NBC, BBC all except FOX they'll just twist it. I just have two points all companies have to take a good research lesson on Old School Mercedes perfection innovations, ie; ABS, Safety cell, air bags, ect... the second point is, whoever is the new car czar (hopefully you good luck with that) has to have Jay Leno as Vice Car Czar.
matt- i dunno if u think its a valid point, but, porche bought a r35 GTR from the factory so they can make their own 911 better. camry and accord have been at each others throats for supremacy, and even hyundai, the little underrated company, competed with a bmw 5 series. my point is, matt, that competition makes good cars, the problem is this "i know it all attitude" the american car manufacturers have.
i say a czar rule : buy and study the competition!!! americans know how to do it!!! they built the 1970 challenger to beat the mustang boss!!! now compete with the europeans!!!
I heard that, and its not unusual for a company to buy a competitor's car as a testing benchmark, after all, I heard that Nissan kept a 997 Turbo right alongside their GTR's as a basis of comparison...
I definetly agree on all the points especially the no restrictions on the supercar one. Every automaker needs at least one masterpiece. I think im the most pissed off about the new nsx. My favorite shows are the ones with u and leo. Good stuff
I cannot agree more with the motorsports idea. Factory racecars are the foundation of the automotive industry. That plus higher quality standards could very well create cars that i would consider buying.
I think GM should do a show like this with maybe Matt as the host but talk about all brands of cars to compare with their own product and get some input from the ppl who watch the show. in the past 30 years they really didn't make any cars that i liked or would buy and that says alot because i only like GM. i would buy old gm cars and restore them cuz they didn't make anything new i liked. my list of cars gm makes that i would buy new. ctsv, camaro, vette if i could fit & G8 notice all rwd
import cars are the best. i have a 1982 toyota supra and the interior is the same or if not better and more advanced than than my moms 1999 dodge caravan
Couldn't agree more. Racing industry is the way to go when building new technology for consumer cars. Especially for new fuel technology such as hydrogen.
Also, hydrogen is the wave of the future. I'd take a hydrogen Honda over a Prius any day. It makes more sense AND the hydrogen car doesn't use any gas to begin with. Top Gear's latest episode featured the new Honda hydrogen car. The Prius still uses gas and has a battery, and the battery on the Prius is up to 40 times more polluting than a gasoline car because the chemicals in the battery are SO toxic. I must say, if hydrogen technology takes off, I'm excited for the future.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM with the big 3 is nobody running the show knows wtf their doing. every car i owned was a gm other then my ram and thats 23 cars. the interior in them suck ass but not my 72 impala and monte carlo tho i liked those but big changes need to happen and i really want gm to stay cuz i'm a GM guy.
This is a FANTASTIC show. Good job Matt and Leo. Bravo. These are great top 10 rules to live by for the automotive industry. Very straight forward and no bull shit. Loved it
I think the American car industry should go down the tubes. After that, allow Japanese and European car makers come to America and buy the rights to GM, Ford, Chrysler. In a few years, American cars are good again.
wait wait wait......they have to write a report to explain how there gunna use the money...it makes no sence tho...they havent been able to come up with a plan in how long, can this really work?
Hydrogen? Seriously? It's all about electric. We have the battery tech to make it work, but lol @ the big 3. There's a documentary about "Who killed the electric car" on youtube, check it out.
Hydrogen is the most abundant substance on earth, and if we re-configure our country for Hydrogen filling stations instead of gasoline we can virtually eliminate vehicular emissions, make cars that don't have to return "home" every 200 miles, and use new technology to allow people to save the planet while not changing their driving habits at all.
i own a 1995 Chrysler lebaron convertible and i must say the interior is appalling. The switch to turn on and off the headlights is a button on the crappy one piece plastic dashboard and if you hit a bump the tailights turn off but the headlights dont. I have been pulled over by the police because of it on more then one occasion.
solar is just about as expensive....Germany and Japan has been working hydrogen for a decade now and is further along that solar...We should use electric cars as most will will fit the average US commuter. Maybe 200 mile battery range only turning on the gas engine to power/charge the batterys when the battery is 3/4s used up
Finally someone calls the JD Initial Quality Awards for what they are. Who the hell cares how good a car is when leaving the factory if they're going to start falling apart and squeaking the second they're put on the car transporter on the way to the dealership.
I HATE those stupid awards, they just falsely make a car look good.
Ok, this question has nothing to do with this episode in particular, but IS actually about the show: What car makes the engine noise in the beggining of every episode?
Well first of all, my first two cars were a ford and a dodge. the only reason my third car is a Toyota, was mainly due to the fact that breaking down after two years of use and scratching you haed to find what the hell is wrong with it is not fun. Trust me, i would gladly buy american, but i would also like to go from point a to b and back without going to c joe break ur bank mechanic.
well as far as new rules go, i think u covered just about all of them on my list.
and when it comes to giving us what we want, GM wants to kill Saturn, NOW that they're finally bringing cool Euro designs to the US...which is what a lot of people want..when they've been making the ugliest cars which we don't like for the past 10+ years.
George bush should be the Czar so they go bankrupt and hit rock bottom forcing a restructure in which all the management is fired and replaced with Guatemalans becasue they probably will work harder.
I totally agree with you Matt, but just one thing you kind of overlooked. What about the people who just see their cars as "tools" so that they can get from point a to point b. Im really passionate about cars, however both my parents arn't and cant understand my passion. So what would you say to those who don't think about cars the way that we do and those who believe the market is overflowing with cars that havn't been sold?
even pure tools have different levels of quality. Ever bought cheap screws to save some money? Don't, they are so easy to strip I rather spend more for quality.
Same for cars even as a tool. Unless the owner is a car enthusiast I have never seen a ten year old American Car that isn't rusting and showing problems. You want to know a good car? Try seeing how many old cars of that type are on the road. Old BMWs and Hondas are more frequent Chevys that aren't rust buckets.
The generic "people mover" car will never go away. There will always be taxis and rental companies, so they will need cars, and the people movers can buy those cars. But I really believe that if the enthusiasts like the cars the average joes will follow suit.
I watched an old motor week video, where they test drove the old Suzuki swift and got 58 miles per gallon. how did they make cars slower and less fuel efficient? :|
My Idea of a good all around car is a ford escort mk1 ( personal preference on body style and weight ) with a 20 valve 4a-ge. Its lightweight, correct gearing would make it a suitable car for daily driving, a weekend track car or both. Sucks that its so hard to get parts for them now.
Here are my top three. 1: Get unions out of the car industry. 2: Get trade restrictions lifted off manufacturing so american automakers can be competive. 3: These companys all so need get back to basics and start making cars the way they use to.
Another thing they all need to do is cut down on their models and in GM's case their brands. It makes absolutely no sense to have so many brands producing the same crap. My idea for Chrysler is that they Have Dodge be the enthusiasts/workers brand with the sports cars and work trucks, Have Chrysler be the luxury brand with entry and upper level cars, and Jeep be the SUV/offroad. A new logo would also be fitting for Chrysler something more classy and updated to form their new quality image.
Build 1 seater vehicle with storage space for groceries and or around town errand running.
It's time to build more effiecent lightweight
single person vehicles. The numbers for miles driven daily show that over 75% of the miles driven on a daily basis are for single individuals driving less than 80 miles round trip back and forth to work. SUVS sporting 7 to 9 passenger capacities hauling 1 person on a daily basis is stupid and damaging the roadways and the environment in the process.
Ever ride a two-wheeler in the snow or heavy rain?
I want a Lightweight= less than 1200 lb. er
with a power to weight ratio thats fun to drive. I don't care if it's Carbon fiber or Fiber glass over plastic in a 1 or 2 seater version.
I want a Smart for 2 or a Corbin Raven that gets 70 + mpg with a Hydrogen booster or some
other hybrid type combo. Gas + Hydrogen would make more sense to start with, since it should make converting to Pure Hydrogen or HHO easier in the future.
They dont need one Car Czar; they need four, A German, to run finance and quality controll, a jap to run research and developement and a brit (possibly someone from prodrive or lotus) to sort ride and handling and run a 'Big 3' racing series (with race prepared road cars). And to bring them all toghether and keep them honest they need an American who simply loves cars.. someone Like Jay Leno.
the Jets are not a red herring. Rather, you are diminishing the event inappropriately. The issue is that if they do this with the jets, what else are they doing wrong? We see very little, but everything we see is wrong. Yet, they want tons of OUR money as a bailout.
And matt n leo are right when they say super cars initiate passion in some shape n form.and in my opinion instead of making a set number of cars tht u think the public wnts and need y not make it an ordering experience where dealers have an original with all the add ons and we the consumer order the car and when the vehicle arrives is when we pay or trade in whatever the decision maybe and if it doesnt sell send the car to a dealer where some1 wants the same options.more topics like this please!
But in addition companies need to be involved in some type of racing to better understand what the cars are capable of and just like mostly all the foreign makers they use their racing programs to further develop new technology. Y do u think more peolpe who have the money buy foreign cars is bc ont only the name but theres trusted tech. involved in the car there's resale value for another nice car and being tht a good amount of ur life is in ur car u want some amentities tht make commute better!
Honestly matts rite not only do the "big 3" need to pay attention to the real car people being the bloggers on the internet bc hey lets be honest were not mag. editors who get paid to write about something but real enthusiast who want the next best thing. did i mention tht i think this is the best show i thinki i've seen on 419 lol.. anyways amer. makers do need some1 like jobbs to make the companies better he is a visionary not a business man 1st and foremost.
i totally argree with everything especially with the reasearchers. i was saving up for a subaru WRX STI. until they made it a wagon, i mean WTF. i loved the box model it looked agressive, rugged, and badass. but now it looks like a run to the grocery store car for the "soccer moms". i want to kill the person who thoght about changing the look of it.
First of all, how about actually building a production car that looks like the concept. Its better to spend the money and build a new platform for a car that will sell than adapt an old platform for a car that wont. 2nd, the big three need to consolidate the number of models they offer. They have too many models within their own brands competing for the same buyer. Focus on building a handful of good cars instead of a bunch of ok cars.
I did a research paper on alternative fuel sources. For the time being hydrogen is a lark. To make a hydrogen powered car that is viable you have to use the fuel cell to power a battery. This is a heavy option, and weight is a factor in range and performance. BMW tried internal combustion with hydrogen yet even though hydrogen burns more efficiently than hydrocarbons, the horse power output was lower for hydrogen than for gas. I think it has to do with combustion chamber sealing. Go diesel.
But I would make car company have their cars more aerodynamic... Increases performance, fuel efficency, so makes it better for "The Planet" and also makes it more of a selling point for the companies!!
Car companies needa make more hot hatches with good diesel engines... Such as the Fabia vRS from Skoda, combines good performance again with decent MPG!!
right now its survival of the fittest. f1 is great, but honda is pulling out because it wants to focus on all the bits of fuel mileage it can get. and yes the car czar should do some prodding to force a little more development of hydrogen technology.
FANTASTIC episode. what the american auto industry needs is an gang-bang. a fantastic messy, hot, steamy gang-bang.
get the quality and stamina of the germans, the innovation and unique coolness of the french, the reliability of the japanese, the prices of the koreans, and the soul of the italians, and the crazy attitude of virtually all the swiss manufacturers and tuners.
the ultimate car-guy's czar: Gordon Murray. all other choices are stupid. the man IS modern motoring genious.
I agree with the fact that american cars need to be hitting European standards, however, I also believe European automakers need to come with AFFORDABLE sport cars, and I'm not talking about golfs or rabbits, I'm talking about real sports cars. The only reason I feel fond to the american automakers,
Get these motherfucking Unions out my Motherfucking Factories!!! LOL that needs to be the new slogan for the big three. love it

Jfkennedy62 2 years ago
i feel that the american companies are trying only 2 things. copying the japanese, and going retro. like farah said, we need to go back to making the cutting edge cars of the future. Whether they are big, or small, they need to be american and they need to be reliable. my name is Micah, and i am 16. My dream, and reality, is to start my own american car company that will give us our faith in the auto business again, and will be unique.
micahhsancurrie 2 years ago
The unions HAVE to go. It is an outdated system that has caused the quality of American cars to suffer for many, many, years. The big 3 want to keep the 'passion' that I feel MOST foreign makes have lost and implanted into the US minds (Priuis, Kia, etc...). However, with the unions always forcing the big 3 to fall to their knees, they will never be able to push ahead and promote that 'passion' which has been slowly going away from America's streets.

Why do retards ALWAYS given management a pass? Oh yeah, your Republican master tell you what to think and you just swallow all that corporate jesus bullshit.
apostate001 2 years ago
its very simple... You need to have someone that will tell the auto makers that they need to start to produce quality products even if it means the cost of the cars goes up. They also need someone that will say that the money must be repayed. If it is not then the companies will sink. I think the car companies will get kicked in the but and wake up to keep in business.

look american car makers cant make a good interior because american cars are cheap.... if you compare the price of an american car whit a basic renault our a citroen it would set you back more money so its normal the interior sucks :P

Totally untrue. Even more expensive American cars have had sub-par interiors. Cadillac is getting better but is still no match for a similarly priced Audi.

my rule is not to build a car just to fill a gap in a production line. we dont need small suv, mid size suv, regular suv, and a large suv from the same damn company. car companies should try to build a wide range of cars yes but not that wide. they should try to specialize in one area. what happens is they make all these cars to fit markets and they all suck. if they only competed in one or two classes, companies could make one or two really good cars

the chevy volt is a hybrid because it still has a gas engine. so are you saying electric is the way to go? the best electric car right now goes 250 miles max on one charge. great for daily commutes but what about long distance travel. e-85 is still part gasoline and you can convert a regular engine to run it. it could also be distributed to the east and west coast. hydrogen would be the next best but its even harder to make and distribute.

I would keep the cars that are uniquely american like the Corvette the pick up truck ,the Jeep or even the big suv but make them better by design. Bring european and asian cars made by the subsidiaries and also focus on development of the new golden era of US made cars. Ayen
ayengomez 3 years ago
Exactly, I agree.
Suprtigr 3 years ago
the alternate fuel is what will determine what type of cars are made in the future. i honestly think that e-85 is a step in the right direction but not a solution. in order for the hydrogen market to be popular they have to start out in the sport world and optimize from there. what toyota is doing with the prius is backwards. they should have made a sport car hybrid first because it would be much more interesting therefore increasing popularity.
JonnyTommyGuns 3 years ago
damn it read my posts lol
unless you live in the midwest... e85 will do nothing for you - hybrids will do NOTHING FOR YOU!
the only thing i see that will keep chevy afloat is the new chevy volt in what is it - 2010? (if not sooner) - 40 mpg with out fuel at all - thats the step the world is looking for - not some hybrid e85 - sure you can buy a hybrid e85 anywhere.... try finding a pump on the east or west coast to use it with is my point.

Take a second, go read the Wired Magazine's article about Jobs. There have been several stories about him making grown men cry. He's a bad ass. That is the kind of person that the auto industry needs. Matt was right when he said- no one knew they needed an iPod until Jobs said so. Jobs for car czar.

Hey Matt and Leo,
Is anyone taking into concideration that more people are buying older used cars and trucks (mostly cars)?

They are brilliant!

lmgrnzx6rr 3 years ago
Totally agree with you Matt! Where can I vote for you to be the car czar? Haha...
But really, right now it's sad. I'm 17 and there are very few American cars that I would actually want or be willing spend my money on someday. Instead I turn my eyes to import cars. I myself own a 1986 Toyota MR2 that has 112,000 miles and still runs great and love every bit of it. Decent gas mileage, decent power/acceleration, and comfortable/cool interior. That's how everything should be done.
BHProductions560 3 years ago
Oh and "retro future" IS retarded... When I see an awesome futuristic concept at an auto show, I want to see it on the showroom floor within 2-3 years! Why build concepts if you aren't going to put them into production! "retro" is just a fancy word for OLD... Give us new stuff, and give it to us now. By the way. I think another rule should be that GPS should be standard in all cars, it's so cheap for them to put it in, the fact that it costs $300+ is ridiculous!
warrj7462 3 years ago
i totally want a challenger retro-future and all
Trumpetman319 3 years ago
Matt,
There are good things about Unions, but they are one of the main things driving the auto industry into the ground!
Love Garage 419!!!
warrj7462 3 years ago
ooops, i meant to spell cadillac!
StevenSVT 3 years ago
all cars should have individual platforms, or should i say an individual drivetrain. ok, i understand that sharing platforms save millions, but then it's just like driving the same damn car but in a different shell! for example... the lincoln mks, in the handling department the car is very similar to the taurus- which is tedious and boring. the mks should be a sport luxury sedan! like those of acura, lexus, honda and caddilac.
StevenSVT 3 years ago
Lee Iacocca for car czar, he's been there and done this thing. I realize he's getting up there in his years, but nobody knows how to bail a car company out like Lee Iacocca.
Hydrogen? It's not ready, and don't forget it takes energy to produce it. Also, hydrogen cars are driven by electric motors, so electric first; unless you want to power ICEs with hydrogen, that's a different story.
Another, thing we gotta drop this US V. Them mentality. You know Toyota lost $1.7 billion in this market?
thoughtchallenge 3 years ago
ICE's that run on hydrogen..... that would be a perfect world for me.
edersiomoran 3 years ago
Allow me to both inflate and deflate your bubble before it bursts. Believe it or not hydrogen can power an internal combustion engine with only a few modifications. Problem is hydrogen generally requires electricity to create and an infrastructure to deliver. Nonetheless here is a 30 year old video of Jack Nicholson driving a hydrogen powered Chevrolet Caprice:

Hey, if the feds want to help GM Ford and Chrysler, why not give the money to the car buyers instead of the manufacturer. Five grand cash for buying a GM car would move them off the lots pretty quick.
wilfordmurray 3 years ago
I don't agree with you Farah on one of your points. Carmakers should continue recreating cars from the past. The new Mustang, the new Challenger, and the new Camaro are some of the best cars that the "Big Three" has to offer. Don't discourage them or you'll be left with nothing. And by the way, it's not as easy as you think to create a great looking car from scratch. I'm glad that at least we have those legendary cars from the 60's and 70's to get some inspiration from.
xoloxum 3 years ago
yes agreed but you cannot keep coming back to them, i mean look at the next years mustang it looks not all that different than the current model, i do however agree with you on the challenger and the camaro (lets face it every camaro the third and fourth generation up until this new one were butt ugly!)
Loginasdfg 3 years ago
Of course it's not easy to design a new car from scratch, but other car companies have no problem doing it. For the most part the Japanese and European companies don't bother with retro remakes, they design new cars. Even the SLR Mclaren Stirling Moss, which was designed as tribute to the original race car, looks nothing like the original car, save for a couple small cues.
Garage419 3 years ago
i agree on the "department of the interior" the quality sucks but they need something more and its not only that, US carmakers need to have passion for detail. for example look at a citroën they are strange cars but the interior of all cars is diferent unique and has details like the controls or the lighting or compartments.. just details that make a car a betterplace to be without the need of fancy interior materials IMO
daackmpoy 3 years ago
I would have less versions of the same car such as the corvette and mustang. It seems like every year there's a new corvette or mustang and they have very few differences from the one from the previous year. What I would do is have a standard version and a high performance version and nothing in between. Also release one every 5 or 6 years not every year.
flame5891 3 years ago
i know what you guys are sayin about interiors lol. i was in a 2005 accord this morning, and the interior has a kind of high quality feel to it. all the knobs turn smoothly, and its actually good looking too. this is in a basic sedan here. later i got into a 2006 mustang, and it was all really really cheap feeling. looked horrible too. and this is supposed to be a sports car that ppl will pay extra for.
crazysunami 3 years ago
Hydrogen might be the future, but electric cars are ready NOW.
cinndave 3 years ago
I wouldn't call a technology "ready" unless people can get in the car and drive cross country in a manner no less convenient than their current gasoline car. Long recharge times and short ranges pretty much eliminate electricity from being "ready" now. Additionally, fossil fuels must be burned to produce the electricity, so it's not really 100% clean like Hydrogen.
Garage419 3 years ago
in all my research ive found that hydrogen production burns alot of fossil fuels as well does it not?

5 owned a gokart as a child

Car companies needa make more hot hatches with good diesel engines... Such as the Fabia vRS from Skoda, combines good performance again with decent MPG!!
SammyJ21 3 years ago

I think you should be the czar. actually you have the only show in america that actually critizise the auto industry in the usa. all the other mags and shows only talk abouthow eficient the car can be or cheap to buy. they want to learn how to build better, more fun to drive automobiles, stop pretending you are the best. when detroid builds a car like the m3 civic gtr land rover land cruise golf r8, this are cars keep costumer coming back for more, not another buick.

matt- i dunno if u think its a valid point, but, porche bought a r35 GTR from the factory so they can make their own 911 better. camry and accord have been at each others throats for supremacy, and even hyundai, the little underrated company, competed with a bmw 5 series. my point is, matt, that competition makes good cars, the problem is this "i know it all attitude" the american car manufacturers have.

Hydrogen? Seriously? It's all about electric. We have the battery tech to make it work, but lol @ the big 3. There's a documentary about "Who killed the electric car" on youtube, check it out.
Also, Matt I think raised some good points.
DewdInTheNewd 3 years ago

Bush or Obama should send the CEO's of the big 3 overseas to learn something about building cars and the interiors too.

hydrogen technology is more expensive than gas. why not make it solar instead?
BlazingCheerio 3 years ago
solar is just about as expensive....Germany and Japan has been working hydrogen for a decade now and is further along that solar...We should use electric cars as most will will fit the average US commuter.

Ok, this question has nothing to do with this episode in particular, but IS actually about the show: What car makes the engine noise in the beggining of every episode?
edmaluf 3 years ago
It's just a sampled sound, we didn't actually record it, but my money is on something like a NASCAR engine or a dragster

un-american to buy foreign made cars?
Well first of all, my first two cars were a ford and a dodge. the only reason my third car is a Toyota, was mainly due to the fact that breaking down after two years of use and scratching you haed to find what the hell is wrong with it is not fun. Trust me, i would gladly buy american, but i would also like to go from point a to b and back without going to c joe break ur bank mechanic.

well as far as new rules go, i think u covered just about all of them on my list.
and when it comes to giving us what we want, GM wants to kill Saturn, NOW that they're finally bringing cool Euro designs to the US...which is what a lot of people want..when they've been making the ugliest cars which we don't like for the past 10+ years.
it just doesnt make any damn sense.

So what would you say to those who don't think about cars the way that we do and those who believe the market is overflowing with cars that havn't been sold?
oldsoulyoungbody 3 years ago
even pure tools have different levels of quality.
Quality matters.
StaticFalconar 3 years ago

Ricerguy 3 years ago
Here are my top three. 1: Get unions out of the car industry. 2: Get trade restrictions lifted off manufacturing so american automakers can be competive. 3: These companys all so need get back to basics and start making cars the way they use to.
Matt keep up the good work!
jcato2003 3 years ago 3
Another thing they all need to do is cut down on their models and in GM's case their brands. It makes absolutely no sense to have so many brands producing the same crap. My idea for Chrysler is that they Have Dodge be the enthusiasts/workers brand with the sports cars and work trucks, Have Chrysler be the luxury brand with entry and upper level cars, and Jeep be the SUV/offroad. A new logo would also be fitting for Chrysler something more classy and updated to form their new quality image.

i dont think many customers will enjoy buying a car that publicly announces they dont have friends. sounds like a joke but is true.
BishopMike18 3 years ago
Build 1 seater vehicle with storage space for groceries and or around town errand running.
It's time to build more effiecent lightweight
single person vehicles. The numbers for miles driven daily show that over 75% of the miles driven on a daily basis are for single individuals driving less than 80 miles round trip back and forth to work. SUVS sporting 7 to 9 passenger capacities hauling 1 person on a daily basis is stupid and damaging the roadways and the environment in the process.

motorcycle with a side pod or luggage trailer. have fun with that.

LarryMReed 3 years ago

Anwezzy21 3 years ago
But in addition companies need to be involved in some type of racing to better understand what the cars are capable of and just like mostly all the foreign makers they use their racing programs to further develop new technology. Y do u think more peolpe who have the money buy foreign cars is bc ont only the name but theres trusted tech. involved in the car there's resale value for another nice car and being tht a good amount of ur life is in ur car u want some amentities tht make commute better!
Anwezzy21 3 years ago
Honestly matts rite not only do the "big 3" need to pay attention to the real car people being the bloggers on the internet bc hey lets be honest were not mag. editors who get paid to write about something but real enthusiast who want the next best thing. did i mention tht i think this is the best show i thinki i've seen on 419 lol.. anyways amer. makers do need some1 like jobbs to make the companies better he is a visionary not a business man 1st and foremost.
Anwezzy21 3 years ago
i totally argree with everything especially with the reasearchers. i was saving up for a subaru WRX STI. until they made it a wagon, i mean WTF. i loved the box model it looked agressive, rugged, and badass. but now it looks like a run to the grocery store car for the "soccer moms". i want to kill the person who thoght about changing the look of it.
Frankie586 3 years ago
First of all, how about actually building a production car that looks like the concept. Its better to spend the money and build a new platform for a car that will sell than adapt an old platform for a car that wont. 2nd, the big three need to consolidate the number of models they offer. They have too many models within their own brands competing for the same buyer. Focus on building a handful of good cars instead of a bunch of ok cars.

I like the way they covered the Tesla first, and then showed us why it will never be all that important.
KrisWales3 3 years ago
I did a research paper on alternative fuel sources. For the time being hydrogen is a lark. To make a hydrogen powered car that is viable you have to use the fuel cell to power a battery. This is a heavy option, and weight is a factor in range and performance. BMW tried internal combustion with hydrogen yet even though hydrogen burns more efficiently than hydrocarbons, the horse power output was lower for hydrogen than for gas. I think it has to do with combustion chamber sealing. Go diesel.

Matt (G419) is genious.
This was probably my favourite video from G419 so far, never minding the fact that they had Brandon & t Frog commercial (that suuuuuucks).
Totally 5 star ep.

Agree with the Import cars :D
Unless I'm going or a Viper or a Vette!
SammyJ21 3 years ago
right now its survival of the fittest. f1 is great, but honda is pulling out because it wants to focus on all the bits of fuel mileage it can get. and yes the car czar should do some prodding to force a little more development of hydrogen technology.

I agree with the fact that american cars need to be hitting European standards, however, I also believe European automakers need to come with AFFORDABLE sport cars, and I'm not talking about golfs or rabbits, I'm talking about real sports cars. The only reason I feel fond to the american automakers,
