Conching Rosal is still the gold standard to this day. Nobody can sing Ang Maya this good. I hope that international divas can pick up on this Filipino aria and sing it themselves.

this song was first sang by Maria Carpena, the nightingale of zarzuela and the first Filipina recording artist...although Conching Rosal's version is very very nice I still wonder how Maria Carpena sang this song...

I wonder if someone can upload at least a short film, video, or any type of recordings of the arias she performed in the Philippine productions of Carmen, Madame Butterfly, or Aida during the sixties. Ang Maya is a Zarzuela - Spanish light operatic form. (As maked on my sheet music).

Kundiman from my experiance typically have two sections, firstly minor then major, e.g. Mutua Ng Pasig.

Is it possible to post a picture of Conching Rosal? For me she is the greatest Kuniman singer I have heard.

FYI, Jose Estella, the composer of this song, describes it as a "Kundiman". Please see the original music sheet of "Ang Maya" whose original title in Spanish is "FILIPINAS PARA LOS FILIPINOS". This song is actually a "veiled" PATRIOTIC song during the American colonial era and the "MAYA" refers to the Filipinos, they are "Di mahuli at maliksi" which means they are freedom lovers and does not want to be colonized by foreigners.

I think Sam Concepcion was right - this song's 3/4 beat (time signature) qualifies it as a waltz. You can even dance waltz to it-- try it! I know this because I was a music major in college (St. Scho. Pasig).

@MadamePukengkay : The Kundiman is basically written in waltz or 3/4 beat. It can be fast paced or slow tempo. That's why you can dance to the tune of Abelardo's "Himutok" and Santiago's "Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran" which is in the 3/4 beat . But Kundiman music though in waltz was never meant to be danced as a waltz or balse.

A Kundiman can be in the tempo of a Tango (e.g. Habang Nabubuhay), Habanera-Danza (Sampaguita ) and even Pasadoble Militar or March (Rizal's "Sa Aking Mga Kababata" and Gen. Nakpil's "Pahimakas") . What makes a Kundiman a Kundiman is the message it imaparts to the listener: the strong affection and deep love for one's sweetheart, countrymen and motherland.
