What a great horse! I'm still working on mostly training level stuff with my horse, with some work on shoulder-ins, but this seems like something that, although difficult, seems possible with my horse a little further down the road. Thanks so much for the videos!
Thank you for sharing. Your effort is appreicated as you are sharing with others who are learning. Now I know what to expect when beginning as well. Nothing works exactly perfectly but knowing what potentially could happen which is helpful and sharing how to get to the goal is appreciated. SGS
@roundthebendfarm I am currently working on our canter to develop more strength. The elements of a good canter work the hind leg in the same way as required by the piaffe. I hope to be doing some more long lining this fall to share.
You may want to reinforce the aid when you touch his leg with the whip that he picks it up. You can then start moving from one hind to the other to get him to lift one leg and then the other. You can speed this up as he understands. Remember lots of praise and you want elevation and lifting versus shortening of the strides. The strides become shorter because the joints are bending and lifting. Let me know how it goes.
Great job! Have you been able to get Donzer to Piaffe yet? I'm currently working on one of my horses. We're shortening his strides but he seems confused and wants to stop. Any ideas?
@Rooannson we have been getting some half-steps. I am trying to be aware that as a rider it does not help to "help" the horse by moving around. My trainers are telling me that the more sitting and correct the piaffe is, the less you actually feel from the saddle. I would say to try and think about elevating his strides with more up and down movement as a result of the sitting versus a shortening of the strides. I would try to reward your guy when he offers a try that is in the right way.
Wouldn't it be easier to teach him passage first and then just let your seat take it back and on the haunches even more?
