My favorite campaign was when I played as Britannia and sailed my ships all the way around to Greece and took them over. Followed shortly by Mcedonia.
Yeah Greece and Macedon will rape you if you dont play strategically. All the other factions are pretty weak and can be dispatched with calvary no matter the numbers. The only other people I had trouble with was brittania with all their chariots.
@James1803 Macedon and Greece are very easy to take down if you do it right at the beginning. You just need to get their military cities first, as they will start to build up very quickly after you attack them.
Macedon will expand very quickly, and let them do it. Get their main cities in Greece and leave their main armies, let them expand.
Once you've got Greece it's easier to play.
The hardest nation for me to take was Germania and Britania, but it depends where u start off ur campaign
the outnumbering tactic can only be properly used when surrounding an enemy unit. You attacked the strongest part of the spearmen so obviously you'll lose loads of units.
THe actually tactic is to surround you're enemy b4 you attack. Spearmen are weak from the back so throw missiles behind them. Attack them from the flanks where they do not have strong defences, then when spearmen are turning around, surround them and kill.
Brings back memories... The phalanx in this game wasn't very realistic since the units could all turn and face another enemy on the drop of a dime. One of my fav tactics was to place a few units in a testudo formation in front to hold the line and then pepper the enemy with missles while flanking them. The testudo makes it so that as few of your men as possible get attacked from the front while you set up a flanking manuver.
Unrealistic? I beg to differ - a well-drilled unit can alter their formation in any great number of ways (including a number of ways not represented in RTW) within seconds. It was not unheard of for Alexander the Great's phalanx lines to perform feint charges, flank faces and about faces with amazing precision at only a brief order from the officer commanding them.
As to the video, I'd say it was interesting to watch that many cohorts run up against a meat grinder xD
where you first attacked and that is now weakened, en let the center units who begon fighting retreat and rest. And now you have them totally surrounded as a circle. Remember that i 2 units walk through each other fighting one enemy they both get tired. Instead let just one unit attack and the other in reserve so they dont walk each other in the way.
Some extra advice, dont just throw everything on the enemy like you did. Have some in recerver, and first surround them in a moon like form, and let your center attack the enemy, now let your left and right flank walk eneterly arround the fighting units, until they are acctually in the back of the phalanx, and strike them there, send your reinforcemance to your center
Maybe you can try to place the comments in the information next time, 'cuz in the video, it's really hard to read (or is this me being a douchebag?)... Still, nice video btw ^^
the smaller army won only because they were stronger and had better weapons so it contrast to what say about numbers dont matter it's rly skill and experience and weapons. If those were the same skill people on both sides the larger army would win mainly because they encircled the smaller one it was on level ground. also numbers do matter as well as land.
so ur saying u would want only a small nuber of well trained guys rather than a whole army of men trained just as good as teh small army. I think anyone with common sence would want more men with unimaginable skill rather than a few men with the same amount of skill as the larger army skill. in short U can train a large army as good as u can train a small army
what ur saying is confusing and contradicting. your thinking of balancing the quality of troops on both sides and that the side with more numbers would always win?? KageShinobiWarrior is right, if ur chosen as Imperator of all roman forces in the empire u wouldnt know wat to do.
Training is a necessary thing for war, and a general is needed just as much if not more, numbers obviously don't count if you fight smart. I had a situation like this, near Messana I lead the Scipii with 2500 men to fight the Spartan king with 4000 men, my main line was crippled in the first 10 minutes, so I had to do guerrilla tactics with cavalry, I had 300 Cavalry vs. 3000 Spears and barely won, in the end I had only 50 cavalry left but there were only 18 Greeks survived compared to 1500 RM.
If you got 2 units, they got 1. Use they cheapest, weakest on on their front.. The stronger on their flanks.
If you have only 1. Spread out your troops in a longer line than the enemy. Some will die. But the rest will encircle the enemy and start picking them off, one by 1.
I usally put legionaries in the front line middle part and put spearmen at either sides of the front line then put veleties behind the spearmen and put archers and siege weapons behind legionaries and i put calvery on either sides of the spearmen and keep my general behind the legionaries next to the archers then i wait for them to attack me shower them with flame arrows move my calvery so they can flank them on either side and rest of troops charge the enemy head on when get close enough to me
even the cavalary is the most vulnerably to those spearman you shoul try archer to crush theyr number or ballista and then cavalary at last but the archers are the key ;) i think
Yes, that's the method I use. Legionares/ infabtry in front and cavalry attacl from behind. Their spears are pointing to legionares, and sides and back are weak.
Its easy to kill phalanxes, even with cavalry, just pin them with some infantry and hit them from the rear flank with cavalry or infantry and they rout pretty soon, that or theyll change to pikes and get slaughtered
nice vid but you need way more then just cohorts. The best are what you have, atleast 4 groups of highly trained horses, prefered the guard, and 5 groups of armored archers. Keep them always in battle with high fighting enimes like Greek, egypt, brtania, etc. this way they will grow in fighting efficienty. Always keep your horses in reserve but close to the battle for A. if the attack your flanks, and or B. When they rout. NEVER CHARGE HORSES TO PHALANX. If you need more tips write me.
He attacked them from every possible direction and that's why they fight for their lives which actually gives morale. If you attack from 2-3 sides they will rout very fast. Like Sun Tzu said once "Always left a path for your enemy to flee." Don't sure is the quote right but it was something like that ;). If they don't flee you lose lot of good men, but if the do rout you can kill them without loses hitting them in the back :) =).
i was online today and i had to fight a almost all calvary army with thracian pikemen. Now the surrounded me and were attacking me without my pikes up(i was walking and didnt see them to my flank). so it was close quarters and i put my pikes down. this just wope out all of the horses. And that was the turning point of the battle. I WON!!!!
What about the battle of Pydna? Roman legionnaires taking out the greek phalanx.
The front couple of ranks of soldiers didn't even try to fight, they just let the pikes get caught in their shields while they bound down for a shoving contest.
the third and fourth ranks threw pila and due to the deaths on the greek side and the unevenness of the ground, channels opened up between the pikes. The centurions led their men down these and butchered the greeks at close range.
im getting this game in a week and i need help can some1 help me i would like to know how to play before playing and people tell me stuff like: which trooper is best in a charge attack defensive and stuff like that coz even thought im a very good tactician i dont no which is better even though i can see that phalanx can stop alot of troops
Well, you have to plan an invasion before it commences. Like you have to get used to fighting phalanges if you go into Greece, or Cavalry if you go into Scythia.
I know how to play the game, kid....and I know if I had purposefully used tactics I would have destroyed them...and that wouldn't have made a better video...besides, you still would have called me a noob Lol
Talking to you is strangely eating away my intelligence.
Purposely use tactics, people don't want to see idiots fail against the most positive odds, people would prefer to see an epic struggle between two vast armies in which Rome wins by a single stroke of fortune.
Please stop calling me an idiot because I am not. If you had read the comments it would have explained why I didn't use tactics. If I had used tactics, the video would have been a minute long. And you DID say I didn't know how to play this game. You called me an idiot, and idiots don't particularly know how to play this game, but FYI, kind sir, I am not an idiot and I also know how to play this game. Damn well in fact.
With all respect you has not played it tactical, you should send 1 cohord into and let the others flank them and take them in the back, now you use the strength of youre enemy there spears agains ure weak short swords , so let one take him in fornt and the rest flank and back , u can win easy with that many cohords agains so few pilums....
be aware that the cohorts morale level is only good. many units like chosen swordsmen can defeat one single cohort in a battle since they have excellent morale.
dude this only proves that if a infant should rule an army he could possibly fuck it up, but anyone with a IQ above 40 knows that all you had to do was send at least one cohort to fuck em from the rear, that probably imeddiately would've send em running for their mommas
lol read MY comment, that's exactly what i said, if the cohorts just rushed into the phalanx spears. but that doesnt say anything about the macedionian phalanx, your ''demonstration'' is the equivalent of sticking spears into a wall horizantally and see what happens if a bunch of people charge into the spearheads, it wouldn't say anything about the pro's and con's of the phalanx, it just says how stupid the dude is who makes the demonstration
in that case i totaly agree, this lesson is very usefull for 5 year olds who always cntrl+a and dubble right click their enemies right away in battle, thank you sir, for educating 5 year olds around the world on ''tactics''
he could have defeated the phalanx pikemen, all he had to do is charge one half of his army right at the macedonians, and the other half into the rear. phalanxes are weak in the rear, and flanks...
read the description. I was just showing the power of the macedonian phalanges, and there was no tactics involved, save for the pila-throwing at the beginning.
i think people thought of this wrong. he wasnt meaning to win he was showing that a lot of men can be beaten by a little bit of men. NOOBS read the description
as the brutii, all u need as an army r 2 or mor units of equites and 2 units of hastati (or watever half decent infantry) and som mercenary peltasts or creten archers for lil bit of morlae damage to the enemy.
if you wanna beet those Greek Phalanxes you have to use a multitude of cavalry and infantry. the infantry engage the phalanx, while the Cavalry hits then in the flank. It's a simple tactic but with a little effort and practice the enemy might not no what hit him.
be aware that the phalanxes are superior to the roman legions, that's why u gotta dis em abit from the front and then swing a unit of legions into their flank or better still do a pincer move. legionaires alone cant fight phalanxes for shit u got to have em grouped and try to swing around the flanks a bit more
What would have been even better would be if he not only surrounded them,. but set all units to fire-at-will, cause then they would mow them down without even fighting hand-to-hand.
even if u had asked 1 legionares to flank...u wud hav lost less than half the men u did...it looked like the battle of thermopelaie...with invisible rocks and seas...
So I rather have an army of 6000 wel trained pikemen against 60.000 Romans and win? That would be awesome but why are that spears so huge?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB
I swear "outnumbering" pfft my ass !
It's just planning everything a little flank there some cavalry holding someone there finish !!!
saggsett 4 years ago
You don't even need to out number them. Just arrange your formation to attack one of their flanks.

Pfft you've got a lot to learn...I could beat them without using legionary cohorts or that big of a number.

as the brutii, all u need as an army r 2 or mor units of equites and 2 units of hastati (or watever half decent infantry) and som mercenary peltasts or creten archers for lil bit of morlae damage to the enemy.
worked for me, didnt work for greece lol

if you wanna beet those Greek Phalanxes you have to use a multitude of cavalry and infantry. the infantry engage the phalanx, while the Cavalry hits then in the flank.

6 units of silver chrevrons mercanry hoplites + 2 units first early cohort +4 legionary cohort + 3 axuilry archers +2 legion calv = them pwange xD

how can u get a lot of army like that?
tungboy 4 years ago
easy,go to custom battle and fill up two armies with legionary first cohorts
AngryGermanGuy 4 years ago
even if u had asked 1 legionares to flank...u wud hav lost less than half the men u did...it looked like the battle of thermopelaie...with invisible rocks and seas...
sushanalone 4 years ago
if you flanked you wouldn't have lost so many. Flank a phelanx even from one side and it'll crumble.
