Ross Martin went on to star in another CBS-TV series, "The Wild, Wild West" (a Western that aired from 1965-69), anong with two made-for-TV movies in 1979 and '80.
@1985OldSkool In one episode,Ross Martin mentions the wild west to Mr.Lucky.I cracked up when I heard it.I recently bought the entire series from a guy in Manhattan on ioffer who taped it off of Me TV.
@keydet72 How much did Blake Edwards do on this show? Besides PETER GUNN, during the 1959-60 time frame he was finishing up work directing his second major feature film, HIGH TIME, and starting on BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S.
in the opening titles, didn' the camera zoom in on the cat, who winked his one eye? If so, make that three people who were scared of that thing. I was about 5 at the time.
Oddly enough, this laid-back theme was somehow an excellent and distinctive backdrop to Mr. Lucky... as was the wineglass that was part of the sequence that opened the show !
Don't think anyone (sorry if I'm wrong) has mentioned that the organist on this great classic number (and other Mancini pieces) was Buddy Cole. He made some albums of organ jazz etc. in the 50's, and was married for many years to Yvonne King of the King Sisters (they were the parents of Tina Cole, from "My Three Sons").
To me "Mr. Lucky" is still one of the most haunting TV themes. Henry Mancini had a way of capturing the general mood of a TV series or movie like few other composers could. BTW, the titles were changed when "Mr. Lucky" went into syndication. Instead of the "Official Films" title, I remember it used to say "In association with the CBS Television Network."
Though she would go on to star in 'The Time Machine' and 'Where the Boys Are' later on in the year, Yvette Mimieux must have been on cloud nine when 'Stacked Deck' aired. She had just made her big screen debut ('Platinum High School') two weeks prior this 'Mr. Lucky' episode.
Henry Mancini also scored incidental music for Jack Arnold's earlier sci fi's.
Yeah, I think there's a lot of 50's an 60's stuff that was composed by studio musicians but we all remember it; like "The Fugitive", "Bewitched", "Gilligan's Island", an a lot of other stuff. Thanks to those guys for some memorable music, even though we don't remember their names!
Interesting slightly-different textured version of Mancini's hit theme. I like the heavier emphasis on the organ riff...i wonder if Clare Fischer played on the TV version?
The combination of the Mancini theme song with its eccentric-sounding organ, and the wonderful elongated cat logo with a sort of stardust-like background - and especially the animation of the Spartan Productions logo at the very end - all very space-age 1960.
What caught my eye in the credits was Jack "Creature from the Black Lagoon" Arnold and Grant "The Incredible Shrinking Man" Williams. Think I'll play my "Mr. Lucky Goes Latin" now.
Which happened to be celebrating its 100th anniversary that year [Milton Bradley's "successor", Hasbro, maanufactures it today]..."Life" cigarettes, however, was discontinued by B&W a few years later.
During the original network credits, the lower right corner of the screen featured a pack of the sponsor's cigarettes {Brown & Williamson's "Life"}- incidentally, Brown & Williamson didn't like the idea of "Mr. Lucky" running a "gambling ship". Even though the "Fortuna" became a "floating restaurant" by the end of the season, B&W's "moral" attitude caused them to discontinue their sponsorship, and CBS to cancel the show, even though it was one of their highest-rated new series of 1959-'60.

HA! No, 1960. My late mother was a very dear friend (and protege) of Mr. Vivyan's. Yes, they kissed! They both went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and then to the Barter Theatre. My mother gave Ernest Borgnine his first costume for his first role ever (a walk-on), as she was the also the costume mistress. Vivyan died in the 80s, he never became really famous, but I spoke with Ernie in June. He's getting knee surgery in November, so say a prayer.
Well, actually the span of time is more like about one year, though the dates were exactly right. They just about coincide with and encompass the 1960 model year, like when the
'60 Chevy was made. I was born during that time, on June 14, 1960. The theme song for Mr. Lucky was a hit through the Spring of 1960.
Love The Black Cat coolest Cat I ever saw, love the show got some of it on DVD now!

@iwasthor Fitting, because Cary Grant starred in the original MR. LUCKY feature film, from 1943.

Great!! The second best TV theme ever, after Laurie's "Avengers" theme.
Forgot how many tv shows Jack Arnold directed in the 50's before his Sci-Fi classics of the early 60's.
