One of my favorite films. A feast for the eye, for the ear, for the mind. I truly feel pity for those who can only rely on subtitles to get all the beauty, the wit and simple poetry of Prévert's dialogues. I feel like someting is lost in the translation.
@scottmackeen Yes, it's a great script. Watching this scene, I'm thinking of Jean-Louis Barrault more than 30 years later in LA NUIT DE VARENNES. He hadn't lost his talent!
This scene really gets to me. The actors are amazing, every emotion is raw and powerful. Every movement and facial expression Nathalie made broke my heart.
Thre are various alternate cuts of this film; the complete version, which is available on DVD, is variously described as 190 minutes (Second Sight Films, 1991) and 195 minutes (Criterion Collection, 2002).
I got here after watching 'Les Enfants du Paradis' for the first time yesterday. I almost fell over when I saw the moonwalk sequence. Anyway, it is certainly a great film which I plan to watch again.
True. Ettienne Decroux was the teacher of Barrault and Marcel Marceau. He also plays Baptiste's father in this movie. Barrault is playing a character based on the famous French mime Deburau, who probably performed these same illusions 19th century.
Excuse me but I am doing a project that is similar to this, does anyone KNOW the name of the SONG or composed piece through out this or anywhere else i can get something similiar to this
I recently discovered this film. I cannot explain how much I love it. It started a bit slowly, I think due to the necessity of establishing such a large number of characters, but before I knew it, I was absolutely wrapped into it.
I highly recomend this film. The writing is incredibly clever. The story is timeless. The images are beautiful. The Theme is honest. It is a true gem!
Look at 1:54! Wow...this is an early version of the moonwalk/backslide, except it's on the spot. If you look closely, you can identify it to be an 'Air walk' which Hip Hop artists perform now. Look at an air walk video and you'll see what I mean.
Yeah possibly, there's no doubt that this kind of miming he did influenced many dancers in the near future afterwards. Its difficult to deterrmine who really is the 'inventor' because these art forms have developed for thousands of years y'know? But I think this is the earliest recording of it. It's clever and imaginative. I love illusionist styles of dance.
Very much thanks for putting up these clips, but could you have included the scene in its intirety? The part that introduces Garance as that statue is so important to the rest of the story...

The most perfectly worked out plot ever conceived solely for the screen.
