  • A Whitley of 102 Sqdn (Dalton) crashed at Pogmoor, Barnsley in 1941/2. Small bits of wreckage including a burnt map, prop blade and bomb release clip have been handed to Barnsley Museum and the report is with Barnsley Library (Archives).

  • I agree, not a single Whitley was saved which was criminal as it was a fantastic machine.

  • The Brits seem to have this bad habit of not preserving the fruits of their labors or their history.

  • @InfiniteMushroom We have so much from which to choose old thing.

  • These Planes Were called the Flying coffins

  • my dad joined the raf in 1938 his first posting was RAF Kinloss, The whitleys arrived the same year 14fts training wing i . my dad told me that loads of these planes crashed during takeof into findhorn bay.

  • Not to my knowledge. My friend Group Captain Doug Iveson said it was a very docile and would not go any faster no matter what you did. He should know as he flew it on numerous operations before converting onto the Halifax.

  • @UUPIMAN Awesome :)

Wasn't he on that BBC Battle of Britain documentary?

  • did they call this 1 the flying coffin?

  • My Dad flew these from St Eval on anti U-Boat patrols with 10 OTU. To his eternal relief, he never spotted a U-Boat, as he was convinced attacking one in a Whitley would be suicide! Whitleys did sink a couple of U-Boats however. This was the aircraft he loved to fly as it was so slow and stable. Bit of a job taking off though.

  • "The Flying Barn Door"

  • My Grandfather said it was like flying a London bus.He flew one over to Europe three times and came back twice...

  • The 500lb (227kg) device was found in the field near Ebberston (North Yorkshire) on Sunday 16th August by enthusiasts who were excavating a Whitley Bomber which crashed there in the 1940s.

The Bomb was exploded today after having been removed from the plane.
