  • Can you use screw cap type bottles? (The ones with the threads around the mouth of the bottle.) I have a bunch of those type bottles in my shed and would like to re-use them when I make my first batch of beer.

  • I haven't used them. I've been told you can but you are taking a risk the bottles may not seal.

  • Mine is at room temp. around 75. I keep mine in my basement. It stays cool down there. But you can have it warmer but just at room temp.

    The Corona bottles looked like they had real Corona beer in them. At least in the video with my monitor's colors they did. I don't know how they look in actuality?

    It wasn't that long ago when Corona 12 packs would have a sale price of $10-11. Now they go on sale for $13

    The way they're going, it seems we'll all be home brewing pretty soon

  • brewing my first batch .I am on day 4 of fermenting ,I took info from my package and a # of videos to deduce my method. I took 2 gallons of water ,5 oz of corn sugar and a #1 coopers amber extract.along with 1 oz of hops then added 1/2 oz additional hops at the end of the boil.We strained the mixture into the fermenter bucket added 3 more gallons of cold water til we hit 75 degrees, added our yeast to the top

  • I've never tried it that way. I'm lazy and just make it from a kit. How did it turn out?

  • if you stored the bottles in the fridge for a month after capped would it help?

  • You should store them in a dark cool place but I wouldn't put them in the fridge till they have aged for at least 3 weeks. If you put them in the fridge right after bottling that will slow down the carbonation. If it's to cool the yeast will either not work or will take a long time to work.

  • Make sure you also shake the bottles so the sugar mixes in.

  • That's a good point. I usually do that when I wash the bottles before boxing them.

  • With that bench style bottle capper you are using in your video, you CAN use screw top bottles WITH the capper. I have tried it and it works well.

  • I never reuse them. I always buy new ones at my local home brew store. You can get then on ebay too. Never use twist off bottles because they may not seal.

  • Do you have a local supply store? If so they will tell you what you need. If not try Ebay, they have some good homebrew starter kits there.

  • i live in aus an copper isnt the best one to use well its sold in all teh supermarkets but i found the best one to be new zealand brand been told by ppl who have made home brew for years that coppers is teh cheapes thats about it

  • I've made some Coopers. It wasn't bad but I prefer Muntons the best. I will look into the New Zealand brand.

  • 2 questions. first i left the hops in the cheese cloth when I sealed the plastic bucket. second, if I open the bucket now to retrieve it ( it's been 24 hours ) will it mess up the batch? whats the worst that can happen if I leave it in? thanks

  • I have never used hops but I don't think it will mess the batch up if you take it out. I really don't know what it would hurt if you leave it in. Sorry I'm not much help here but I really don't know. I suggest you check out some videos and ask somebody who uses hops. Good luck!!

  • I was a little intimidated about doing a home brew, but i watched your videos a couple months back and they totally took any fear i had away!

    Now I have my first batch fermenting in the basement (right as we speak)... it's a pretty fun hobby and it might even pay of in the end because now i don't have to pay like $16-$20 for a 24 pack of good beer, I can just make it at home.

  • Adding sugar to the bottles = FAIL. Its extra work. Having a "bottling Bucket" is the way to go. As such, one adds to the bucket; a solution of 3/4 cup corn sugar and 1 cup water (the sugar is dissolved in the water by boiling); and the fermented wort (beer). The swirling action of tranfering the young beer by siphon mixes the two. Then, simply siphon the primed beer to to the bottles with the bottling wand. EASY!!!

  • I know it works... BUT, its more time consuming, more work and the results are un-even bottle to bottle. Sorry for any confusion.

  • No, you just put the cap in the capper and place the bottle under the capper and pull the lever and it crimps the cap to the bottle.

  • Hey George, I just bottled my first batch a couple of days ago and I added 1/2 tsp of dextrose to each bottle before filling. I noticed that now you make a syrup with the dextrose and stir it in the whole batch. Now that you've used both methods which do you perfer. BTW I can't wait to see how my first batch comes out. Your videos are the best! Thanks for all your info.

  • Hi George! I hope your beer gets carbonated enough with only using 1/2 tsp. per bottle. I used 1 tsp per bottle.

    I prefer to make the syrup. It's much easier and faster. I hope your beer turns out great! Thanks again!! I'm glad I could help.

  • When I bottled my beer I was using your video from memory and the printed instructions off the Muntons can. The can directions say 1/2 teaspoon per pint and a 12 oz. bottle is roughly 3/4 pint so I just went with that thinking that would be enough. I'll keep my fingers crossed and let you know what happens in 2 to 4 weeks. Next time I'll try the syrup method. BTW I made this batch with confection sugar. Next time I want to try the dry malt extract. Any pointers on using DME?

  • I use three pounds of DME for a six gallon batch.

  • Hey just bought and old capper like your john deer one. I was wondering how many inches above bottle should I place capper.

  • Very cool! Mine even works. You should screw it down to a table if you can. If not screw it down to a board. That will make it much easier to use.

    You should raise the capper just enough for the bottle, with the cap on it to fit just under it. It can be a little higher but when you cap the bottle you can tell if the cap sealed the bottle or not. If not lower it a little and try again. Good luck!!

  • they have had aluminum bottles in japan for many many years. its easier to recycle than glass and plastic.

    seems like alot of work to bottle beer

    i would go the small keg route or use

    16 oz bottles

  • Are you sure about that? I think they were inventd in the States this past two or three years. Iron City Brewery was the first to make them.

    It is a lot of work, but worth it. I use several different sizes of bottles. Some day I may start kegging my beer. I know that's much easier and faster.

  • Being a home brewer myself in Aussie land, i have noted a couple of differences in your home brewing style. The brew we use mainly here is Coopers, but muntons is popualar as well. We use larger bottles 750ml, i myself use carbonated drops instead of sugar when priming the bottle.

  • I have made Coopers before but prefer Muntons. I've changed my ways on how I make homebrew. Check out my vid "How I Make Homebrew Now." 750ml beer bottles, MAN!! You don't mess around when you drink beer!! lol

    I haven't seen any carbonated drops before. Is it any cheaper than sugar? Next time I go to my supply store I will see if they have any and if so how much.

  • Not really. If you're not sure, open one. Personally I would wait at least a couple weeks after bottling before I would open any. It needs to age. But, you should wait for a month for it to be ready to drink.

  • Keys to homebrewing? sanitation. keep everything clean. I sanitize my bottles w/ iodine and rinse them well. allow a week for primary fermentation. You can throw them into a secondary after that for clarity for a week. add dextrose and bottle. you have beer. Cheers!

  • My Coopers kit says that fermentation only takes 4-6 days. Is this normal? I've heard many things about sediment and I can see some in the bottom of your jug when you're finished but what if there is huge chunks of brown stuff on the head of the beer? It's only day 3 of fermenting but my beer is already 4.7% alcohol. I don't know what I did wrong if anything at all... Please help

  • It all depends on the temp of the room where it's brewing. If it's cool it will take a little longer. I usually don't bottle mine until I haven't seen any bubbles coming out of the airlock for a while. I wait a week or so before I bottle mine. If there is huge chunks, there is something wrong with it. There is going to be sedement in it ecause it isn't filtered. Use a racking tube so you don't get very much sedement.

  • I don't mess with the homebrew after I set the batch until it's ready to bottle. That way you don't contaminate it. Just wait at least a week before you bottle it and it should be good.

  • There are different kinds of kits.

  • couldn't you add the priming sugar to the fermenter right before bottling instead of adding sugar to each individual bottle?

  • You can if you syphon your beer into another bucket. Use a racking tube so you don't syphon the sedement into it. Desolve your sugar in some water and put it in the empty bucket before you syphon your beer into it. After you have syphoned all of your beer into the second bucket it should be ready to bottle.

  • Help. I have brewed about 20kits(40pint) in the past couple of years.Plastic barrel,kit,autosyp,Hydometer etc. Geordie brew for Xmas ain't worked.Hydo 1.000 after3 and 4 days. Added more yeast today. Was all clean as heck. Used heater. Maybe too high a temp? Have used b4.First time i think i've lost one.Any hints?? Kevin H.

  • Very nice. An exceedingly effective teaching video.

    A couple of tips for you: Since you seem to prefer extract to all-grain brewing (it is far easier), you dried malt extract instead of liquid. It means you have to actually boil the wort for about an hour or so and add the hops yourself. It's the next step up from no-boil kits like the one you used.

    Regardless, an excellent set of clips. Keep on brewin'!

  • this is the single most effective instructions i have seen on home brewing.me and my mate started a brew yesterday from a can just like yours. (by the way coopers is the australian one) your video clarified that i had taken the right steps, and you get a good result im sure i can too. its been almost 24 hours in the frementer.the airlock hasnt began bubbling yet but im hopefull. anyway. your video is VERY helpfull. thanks alot for making my first brew that much easier.

  • The first brew i maede with a coopers kit did not bubble at all. I heard that is because the ingredients sit around in the kits for way to long and the yeast goes off. This brew turned out average, but drinkable.

    The second brew i did i checked all the used by dates when buying ingredients and bought the newest stuff. The fermenter bubbled like mad for about 4 days, and the end result was a bloody good beer for $12/23 Litres.

  • Don't use it. When I opened the bottles, they overflowed. I was told I used too much. I won't use it again. Use dextrose aka corn sugar.

  • I always hated bottling, and still do, but now I use bigger bottles and there's less to clean and sanitize.  BTW I have the same old caper as you show here! I used it for years. Darn thing probably capped tens of thousands of bottles over the years! Cheers, and great videos.
