Ok, i'm a VH fan from long ago. Dave still sounds great and Eddie can still shread it on guitar. But this song doesn't impress me, it does nothing for me. I just expected more from such an iconic rock band. And I don't care what anyone says, the difference with and without Michael Anthony on this album is like night and day! The backing vocals aren't there like before and Wolfgang on bass won't hold a candle to MA for MANY YEARS to come. But i'm willing to give the rest of the album a chance.
this album will be epic I just hope they can stay around for the long haul... damn it dave don't do anything stupid and get fired we don't need another van hagar round 3....
Its not my fave VH tune, but I do like it! I think the full album will be much better! And people need to let the Michael Anthony go, I'm love him but shit man, he is just a bass player, his background vocals were a key part of the VH sound but so were Eds background vocals,if you want to see him go see Chickenfoot, they will probably be playing at a bar across the street from a sold out Van Halen arena show!
Hate that acapella intro, needs Mike's background vocals, huge hole there, needs to be a step faster, hating the background vocals too slick. I hope this is just a middle of the album cut..color me not impressed.
this song is awesome. if you dont think this is good, you must be on some sort of bad trip. this aint no disco. i dont want to hear Kool in the gang open up for them, but it will be a huge musical contrast and a relief when Van Halen starts.
I thought they would come back in a blaze of glory or something. They need Michael back. Wolfgang's good, but it's not the same. Dave still sounds pretty much the same.
definitely sounds like a Hagar era riff, but its not bad. DLR's lyrics are funny and clever at least. Word has it the rest of the album is pretty heavy and shouldn't dissapoint. Since when is the single ever the best track?
This really blows it might even be as bas]d as the Who playing the Superbowl a few years back
.... why can't they just let it go so I can remember the band when they actually had some validity, Now that they have Eddies kid on bass his 2 year old grandson must be writing the lyrics!!!!!

Good song, not great. Not what I expect as a first release after 25+ years without DLR. Eddie and Dave sound great. Wolfgang gotta go, I know its only a studio release song but lets face it Michael Anthony is much missed on that stage. Overall pretty happy with it, its got that sexy 80's LA sound and fun.

As a TRUE VH fan , i didnt like it at the start n thought what have they done?????? 3 days later i cannot stop listening to it and think it may be the best there released since 5150? HUMANS BEINGS , ME WISE MAGIC only ones close . The thing about this one that the casual listener doesnt get , song seems basic , um WRONG iots amazingly complex, ive listened to it 100 plus time n still finding magic moments , yrust me , u wont like it 1st time , maybe not even 12th time but 20th u will luveit!
Also, the bridge section of the song "Mean Streets" came from "She's The Woman" so I'll be curious to see how they may change that for the new release. I'm getting stoked for this to come out!
Yes, this IS "Down In Flames" w/ new lyrics and title. The new album will also feature 1976's "She's The Woman". Look these songs up; the original '76 demos RULE. Sure the guys are older and there's no Mike, but these are classics from back in the day.
Even if the song's not that great, the productions and instruments sound excellent...Eddie's tone is nice and heavy, Diamond Dave still has his voice, and Wolfgang's bass is really heavy, too.
I love the riff but the something just seems off with the lyrics. Almost like they were just thrown together after the riff was made. They just don't go together.
I hate to say it,but for as much of a Van Halen fan as I am,this just isn't working for me,someone else said they sound labored, and I have to agree, this one just didn't produce the usual oomph from Van Halen, but hey, they're getting older and thats okay, every dog has its day.
Anyone notice that the new VH album cover is identical to The Commodores album "Movin' On"? Wiki and see it for yourself.
Recycled songs, recycled album covers... has the band really run out of original ideas? I'm a huge Van Halen fan, but I would have thought they had some originality left in them...
@paistekid ...And you probably saw this information on a website. They just used the same train, nothing else. If you haven't noticed, music is being recycled for decades now, especially by those corporate whores.
That's right! And still no one saw it!! Obviously, you know nothing about VH. A high calibre band like this recycling songs over 30yrs ago especially when Eddie said he has enough music for the next 100 albums. And yet they're digging back to the past. Not good for a high calibre band such as the mighty Van Halen!
HUGE Halen fan but this just isn't doing it for me. Everything seems labored, over produced and not at all like they used to sound. Back in the Roth days they flowed like candy to the ears and Roth's voice was smooth and strong. Eddies guitar was epic and with his brother on drums and Anthony on bass they really rocked the shit out of you live. I went to a number of their shows and was never let down. Even during the Hagar days they kicked ass. This just sounds old to me, and not in a good way.
@realvfs Give them a break, dude. I am almost 44 years old, and when I turned 16 Van Halen had already been famous for quite a few years. They've been around for a long time, and I find it admirable that at this point they still have the energy and the disposition to continue making music and touring. Cut them some slack.
Great to hear Diamond Dave again, and the sound is definitely Van Halen, but the song doesn't strike me as a "hit", more along the lines of a filler track. It's not bad, mind you, it's just "there". Hope the album is as good as the Cars' reunion album was.
no bad great licks but were sammy?? david still has the voice but it sounds more like bubble gum rock then the old VH. hopefully on the new album theres a little more rock and better lyrics!
Sounds pretty kewl. Sounds like a blend of the Good Ol' Party Animal Van Halen, with a heavy inspiration from David Lee Roth's solo work, and some more majesticness in the choruses; Almost like a slight Satriani or Steve Vai inspiration. Idk guys. It's not my favorite, but this kicks ass. They tried something new, while still staying true. Love it. High hopes for the rest of the album. :3
Come on people!! First of all, VH has well established themselves and have nothing to prove to me. This is raw pure rock and it is great! I loved VH with and without Dave and I loved everything Dave did solo. I love them and I still get goosebumps and I'm thankful that they are together.
Okay......"Me Wise Magic" was better than this turd here, absolutely no balls from a band that prided themselves on having balls. What in the name of Michael Anthony is going on. Listen to it a few times? Holy shit once was enough. I had to go pull up "Light Up The Sky" real quick to stabilize my blood pressure.
now im not busting on anybody but i was the first one one youtube to put this song up. and i literaly have the same video and it got blocked for copyright. how doesnt this get blocked as well?
Wow, this is actually pretty good. lt might not sound exactly like their older, better stuff but think about it, that was years ago. Do you really think David whos in his 50s can sing just as awsome as he did over 20 something years ago... Their music definitely sounds good considering their age!
I don't give a fuck who's the singer, judging by this song it at least proves that all of them can still sing in the studio (and when you see them live I doubt you really care as long as you're witnessing the band), and they finally are coming out with a new album, the first of hopefully many to come, and its only got a few old songs on it, FUCK YES!
I LIKE IT I THINK DAVE PISSES OFF EDDIE WHICH MAKES HIM PLAY A LITTLE MORE INTENSE NOT LIKE WATERED DOWN SAMMY STUFF NOT THAT I DON'T LIKE SAMMY I JUST LIKE THIS APPROACH ALSO THIS REMINDS ME OF DAVES SOLO STUFF THE ONE WITH JASON BECKER YEAH !!! KEEP IT COMIN VH
Hoping it gets better on the album. Sounds more like DLR's solo stuff than old VH. Was waiting for a "boozy boozy bop! biddy bop!" in the lyrics. Maybe it's just because Michael Anthony's distinctive backing vocals are missing.
I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not after my first listen, but it grew on me. The only thing I can say now is that I wish that Eddie's guitar was louder. I can't wait for the release of the album to see what the rest of it sounds like!
Some of you guys, man! VH is f'in rock. It doesn't matter what the new album is like, it's just perfunctory music business stuff. Eddie still kicks the shit out of everything he plays, not technically right on all the time, but he friggin swings like mad. I really dig it and about 98% of the world does to. Give him a few minutes on stage and he will make it worth your while.
that's a sick riff!..love it....feeling like summer.time...seating in the sand looking at the ocean under the sun...checking out some good looking girls...
It took a couple listens but now I find it catchy as hell. I think expectations were just too high. That's why many are disappointed. I'm not. Personally I love Roth's lyrics, always have. They're funny and clever which is more than I can say for Sammy's which always were so lame.
I don't expect Tattoo to be the rockingest song on the album but it's a fun intro to the new era. Let's hope this isn't a one-off record but the first of many.
Everyone. . .get over it! Its only been out for a day. . .give it time! It mighted be a great tune like Jump or Panama ect. . . But its not terrible. In my opinion, its at least 4 stars outta 5.
This song is awesome cause there old and bold still rockin at 70 so I think its great for new van Halen and im glad there gettin in the game and Eddie.still rockin those solos ughhh... Orgasmic (no homo)
First of all, i agree with Dlano619. This is not a post for attacking, its a discussion. OK, now on to my review. Its not a bad song, seems to have some old Van Halen sound. Roth doesn't sound bad at all. Eddie's guitar playing seems right on spot. But it just isn't catchy to me like Me Wise Magic was. Maybe after some more listening, I will find the catch that I need. Still I think some of us Van Halen fans might be wary, but so far so good. Lets see what they can do.
It sounds good but doesn't have the claassic hi pitch bg vocals of Mike, so it sounds a bit more like a good DLR solo song, but it's just this song. Either way it's not bad.
Its not bad, but I feel that they aren't trying anything new. Its typical van halen. I know, they don't have to try "new", but if you expect to make money....... There only gonna sell to your moms and dads. Its not garbage, but its not gonna get them overnight recognition.
Look for those expecting 1984 all over again will be disappointed..This is almost 30 years later times change..I for one love it..they evolved quite nicely..great song..great hook..amazing guitar licks...think u are going to get DLR in yellow and black spandex or assless chaps anymore would be ridiculous like a fine wine they aged great..I for one am looking forward to the new tour and Wolf brings newblood to the band..Kudos...
i agree re: the sounds like little ain't enough type stuff. not the best, but still cool, no denying that dave + eddie make magic....too bad they wasted decades!
Alright, keep the arguing and fighting to a minimum. This post on, any more posts I see attacking other users will be removed. Disagreeing and discussing is fine, arguing and attacking other users characters isn't.

@raceyro You obviously know absolutely nothing about VH. Nice channel kiddo! Your channel really shows what you like, when it comes to music. Now go and fuck yourself, if you haven't already.
@Dlano619 its nice and raw,,, is this just the demo?,,, love it,,, this will be one of those songs that will sound heavier live,,, roth n roll is back
It sounds like this was a song written more for Hagars style, I want the old style, screw The Hagar stuff, I want the So this is love, Mean Streets, Take your Whiskey home!!!!!! Their has to be some old stuff in the Vault they can bring to life!!! I just hate the word Tattoo!! Sounds like they are singing about the Midget from Fantasy Island!!!!
Horrible sounds like roths solo stuff...couldn't they at least recapture Me Wise Magic and Can't get this stuff no More...at least those jams had something going on...I hope their is better stuff on the Album...I have been waiting to Long for this!!!! Just give us one more good Album!!! Please!!!!
I agree this is not as good as the older van halen songs that they recorded back in the 70's & 80's with David Lee Roth I hope the rest of the album is better the music isn't too bad
This is lame. What the fuck is Roth even saying half the time? This sounds like Hagar-era shit. I wanted eddie's old guitar tone back goddammit.I hope the album is better than this.
Good stuff. Roth is back!

First listen was okay, second was better, then it got stuck in my head. I'm in now. Cautiously optimistic for the rest of the record.

Hoping it gets better on the album. Sounds more like DLR's solo stuff than old VH. Was waiting for a "boozy boozy bop! biddy bop!" in the lyrics. Maybe it's just because Michael Anthony's distinctive backing vocals are missing.

Probably never been in a band either, to me it's like a blend of DLRs solo stuff & the new van hagar

Love how all the critic fools have never written a good song in their life yet here they are bagging out an incredible rock band

giantszach98 1 month ago
I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not after my first listen, but it grew on me. The only thing I can say now is that I wish that Eddie's guitar was louder. I can't wait for the release of the album to see what the rest of it sounds like!

It took me a few listens, but...DAMN this is catchy!!!
Welcome back VH!!!!!!!

One word. Horrible.
clivebuckwheat 1 month ago
It took a couple listens but now I find it catchy as hell. I think expectations were just too high. That's why many are disappointed. I'm not. Personally I love Roth's lyrics, always have. They're funny and clever which is more than I can say for Sammy's which always were so lame.
I don't expect Tattoo to be the rockingest song on the album but it's a fun intro to the new era. Let's hope this isn't a one-off record but the first of many.

Sweetchinmusic666 1 month ago
First of all, i agree with Dlano619. This is not a post for attacking, its a discussion. OK, now on to my review. Its not a bad song, seems to have some old Van Halen sound. Roth doesn't sound bad at all. Eddie's guitar playing seems right on spot. But it just isn't catchy to me like Me Wise Magic was. Maybe after some more listening, I will find the catch that I need. Still I think some of us Van Halen fans might be wary, but so far so good. Lets see what they can do.

Ive loved "Down in flames" since i first heard it on a VH boot in 1990.
Glad they used some of the music and i like this song.
It gets better everything u heard it.

Sad.
Guitarteacher777 1 month ago
It sounds good but doesn't have the claassic hi pitch bg vocals of Mike, so it sounds a bit more like a good DLR solo song, but it's just this song. Either way it's not bad.

WOOOOOO IM 14 AND I LOVE VAN HALEN SO HAPPY THEY GOT A NEW ALBUM!!! LOVE THIS NEW SONG THEIR ALBUM IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!
YoungSneakerhead07 1 month ago
Its not bad, but I feel that they aren't trying anything new. Its typical van halen. I know, they don't have to try "new", but if you expect to make money....... There only gonna sell to your moms and dads. Its not garbage, but its not gonna get them overnight recognition.
Godsend2018 1 month ago
Look for those expecting 1984 all over again will be disappointed..This is almost 30 years later times change..I for one love it..they evolved quite nicely..great song..great hook..amazing guitar licks...think u are going to get DLR in yellow and black spandex or assless chaps anymore would be ridiculous like a fine wine they aged great..I for one am looking forward to the new tour and Wolf brings newblood to the band..Kudos...

buckeyesrule10 1 month ago
Song is great, but those backing vocals sound like Dave's solo work. Mike's absence on that department is too harmful for the band.

IMO, it's a solid song. Nowhere near their best, but you can't always knock it out of the park. I've heard the rest of the album is way better.

@Dlano619 very true, still if you listen to this a few times you start to like it.

@MrThatsYe Exactly, I like the song, I think it's catchy as all get out and a good song overall. And like I said, I've heard the album is better.

@Dlano619 always better to start with a mediocre song first, only to find even better stuff on the album ;)

Their has to be some old stuff in the Vault they can bring to life!!! I just hate the word Tattoo!! Sounds like they are singing about the Midget from Fantasy Island!!!!

mkmusic1995 1 month ago
I agree this is not as good as the older van halen songs that they recorded back in the 70's & 80's with David Lee Roth I hope the rest of the album is better the music isn't too bad
scottmoore30 1 month ago
This is really, really bad. Sorry - not trying to insult Van Halen in general. This is just a far cry from what made them the band that they were.
