@NjGrizzly I was going to say something under the lines of " Fuck you, you piece of shit... (and then retort)" but then I looked back at my comments and realized I've only said prog instead of progressive. Unfortunately I have to type on phone instead of a computer, so I was trying to save time, but that's no excuse. Thank you for catching my mistakes.... Lol just kidding. Mother fucker say your opinion about the song, not me. Piece of shit....
@owlandtree I respect that you are passionate about Classic Prog bands, and the reason you see a lot of people compare TMV to those bands is because The Mars Volta is influenced by bands such as King Crimson, ELP, and Mahavishnu. And I think you are right (I think the members of TMV would think you are right as well) they aren't as skilled as those bands. However, they really opened doors for people who haven't heard those Prog Music before, and thats why a lot of people like them.
Oh and one more thing, this worrying about what genre what band goes into is one reason music is shit now. What I said in my other post applies here also. People have this semiconscious need to keep music in neat little groups. How can anybody make anything original if it has to be labeled as a certain type of music? I mean, I get it and everything, I really do. But I knew a guy who missed out on Alice in chains just because he didn't like Nirvana (Grundge overall). Imagine is surprise.
There's nothing wrong with this band. They are one of the better bands on the popular radio stations, but I still don't consider them in the same genre as Mahavishnu, Rush, ELP, Yes and Gong. They simply are not as mind-blowing. Not as talented. Yes, they have big record contract and fancy musical videos for your visual pleasure. The experimental Prog. rock of the 60's and 70's was popularized, like the phrase "Alternative" or "Punk". The current-day caricatures are diluted. Sorry just the msgr
@owlandtree In this time and age, I would have to disagree. It's like a treasure hunt finding originality in today's music. Like I always say: Back then, musicians made genres. Today, they just have to fit into them. If Rush just so happened to come out in 2011, how original would you consider it?
This band (along with all good bands of today) are cursed with how late they came to the party.
@CrabJock I would consider it Dream Theater. No, I don't buy that there is nothing new to create, only caricatures to flip off of. It's the whole chrystallization of Capitalism and the result of an even more Consumerist generation. I can't believe that the history of music stopped in the 80's with Hip Hop. I do agree that it is very rare to hear anything slightly original. Secret Chiefs, Isotope 217, Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum are some "newer" original bands, still kinda old news.
@owlandtree I agree new things can be created. The unoriginality today can be fixed. I just believe it to be more semiconscious than anything. In a matter of opinion, I just think any band with the talent to make original music today is equal to those older generation musicians. The curses today's musicians are under are created by demand and, (I agree) the holy tune of Capitalism. Combine record companies with oblivious teenagers of today, and you delude the very core of music.
@CrabJock You could argue that even those bands are Neo Fusion. Back Fat Milkshake and Shrimpanzee are good, but not on MTV. The Mars is okay, just not as stellar as some of these kids think. They just haven't heard older fusion/prog. rock. So this passes as Progressive, which like Alternative, lost it's literal meaning for a genre.
@owlandtree : Dude you are an old FAGGOT! Nobody here is calling MV the 2nd coming of Maha Orch. You said that and you brought it up out of left fucking field. And out of all the bands in the world to begrudge success you pick the Mars Volta! Way out of line pecker-breath; especially considering how you've heard 1 song of many in a stellar catalog. And why do you need to label them 'progressive?' Not everything fits into a neat little box. So take you 'neo fusion', fat pompous ass elsewhere
@rmed30 Actually, this is the second song that I have heard, at least. The first video I commented on because some ignorant tool was in fact comparing this band to Mahavishnu. I pointed out one simple reason why that's apples for oranges and an army of brats assaulted my comments cause I ripped their generations' answer to King Crimson. I said I would check out another video, in case I didn't give a fair shot. Same Top 40 residue, different song. I did not call progressive, opposite.
@owlandtree Listen to the entire album. I always say, if you've only listened to one or a few songs from a prog band and not an entire album from them, you have NOT listened to that prog band yet. I admit, this song is most certianly in a more "Pop Format", but then again wasn't "Lucky Man" from Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, or most of the songs from Moving Pictures? Prog is always going to be a genre where you're going to have to dig deeper to find the goods.
@gjc5951 I don't know why kids insist on comparing this band to Rush, ELP and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Lucky Man and that album are very different from Tarkus, Brain Salad and Pictures at an Ex.. What those guys did with a 3 piece and mostly no guitar was new and amazing. Moving Pictures was Rush's 8th studio album. Many interviews on the change in vocal style/moog pedals, etc. Natural progression as musicians. The Charred Vespa is not even close. Hipster-clad Rob Zombie video, with blood.
This is what they call prog rock these days? It got...stripped down. I remember when "alternative" stopped being alternative; Nirvana/Pearl Jam. Republicans used to be Democrats, etc. Yup, I must be too old to fool with the labels. This is Top 40 rock popular music. Far removed from the 60's and 70's experimental rock/prog. rock. This fits the pop format to the T. Subgenres are subjective.
@owlandtree I never go by what a band or labelled. RHCP is sometimes funky, sometimes more like rock. TMV is prog, but sometimes they pull something like this, so something more Latin sounding. Just listen to a bunch of songs, that's what I do. I like these guys, but not all their songs; and that's not crime.
@KingZogIII I used to like the RHCP. Uplift and Freaky are their only good albums to-date. Blood Sugar was a Top 40 McNuggets factory. The way Kiedis treated Bungle; acting all premadonna proves they are Corporate vomit cakes. What happened to Flea? Did he get neutered? This Mars Bars Vodka is better than most Top 40 radio, but again, to stay on-topic, they are no Mahavishnu, that's for sure.
@owlandtree yeah what gjc5951 said.... Yes, the forerunners of prog rock, had a track that was just classical music, king krimson, book of saturdays is just pychedelic, but they were prog
@billzor I would say that the Soft Machine was really the first Prog. Rock band, but King Crimson came along a few years later with more intricate material. Those are merely two bands that "made it". There are many prog. rock bands from the 60's that made records, but didn't tour. King Crimson is great. Saw Adrian Belew again, not too long ago; amazing. Larks, Tongues and Aspic was a later KC album; one of my favorites. Still, The Martian Vespa is no Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Sorry for invading this space. If you have time to see my music channel, I do original music. Our band is Nova Stella. We do original music ... Thanks in advance for looking.
@MxC1337MxCsh43d No scare was exactly the right word for what i feel. Im not saying its not a beautiful song( wouldnt listen to it if i didnt think it was).
Um - I dono about sounding like Zeppelin or Plant - I'm a HUGE Zep fan and I dont hear it here - althought this is good... I do not hear Plant. Perhaps a tOUch of Jack White....
The only ignorant people are those who think they are just smart enough to judge everything and everybody on the first sight without never be wrong. Think about it
Who cares what this is about, it sounds awesome itself. Sometimes it's better to just accept things at face value instead of digging for self assumed nuggets of inner truth or meaning :) Just listen to how good it sounds.

I hate when people debate over band lyrics.
Can't we all just listen to the music, take from it what we can, and maybe DISCUSS what we think, instead of have a little bitch about it?

If you're new to Mars Volta, you gotta hear Televators and Eriatarka next.

People have compared these guys to Mahavishnu Orchestra?! Ignorant people. These guys are typical MTV common denominator.

Who cares what this is about, it sounds awesome itself. Sometimes it's better to just accept things at face value instead of digging for self assumed nuggets of inner truth or meaning :) Just listen to how good it sounds.
