Tommy Johnson is almost unknown and it makes me sad... Robert Johnson is great, but he's not the only one... Tommy recorded his 17 songs before Robert did, and nobody talks about him...maybe except on Youtube!
@SuperBillythepoet I agree. Some of that must have something to do with the quality of the recordings. Tommy's are often static-like where Robert's aren't so much. Tommy also never had a guy like Clapton singing his praises.
I doubt many remember them today especially the young cats. You talk to them about stuff from the 60's and their eyes start to glaze over. They learn about music from American Idol, not from dues paying guys like Canned Heat or Ray Charles. Guys like Bob Dylan, or Hank Williams Sr or Jr, or the forgotten Red Foley are American Idols, not the latest winner of that show.
@AllBobsAllTheTime the blind owl dont measure up this is the guy that re taught son house to play his own tunes and he dont measure up ok you talk pish my friend
@AllBobsAllTheTime canned heat was a lemon jefferson song.robert johnson mostly copied son house and Lonnie Johnson.robert johnsons Blues existed before robert johnson was born.It was that crossroads film with the karaty kid that made robert johnson the famous houshold name.I know it because I was into that type of Blues before the crossroads film came out.robert johnson is just one of many records on my shelve nothing spectacular.
@kaptainbastard The push for Robert Johnson came in the late 60s after the Cream version of Crossroads and the release of the King of the Delta Blues Singers LPs which everyone snagged.
i absolutely love this song, and how much fun to play? Check out David bromberg doing this tune on his solo acoustic album or the version with jorma kaukonen here on the tube. Just fantastic stuff.
OMFG!! man you have every fuckin video that is truely amazing of the blues artist... Now im only 16 and i knoow it dont meen mutch from a youngster , but you know what the real deal is !!!!
@solszewi wish the blues did have a future but where are the cats playing like Tommy, Blind Willie, Charley Patton and Guitar Slim? I love the late Stevie Ray but he didn't even play like these guys, and there are hardly any young cats doing what that guy could do. When B. B. goes who is going to take his place? It is sad what is happening to the blues. The Rolling Stones started out as a blues band and even they turned their backs on it.

This song always takes me to some strange void. It physically gives me a feeling of the blues and grimness.

Every time I hear a young cat praising the blues, I feel hope for the future. Now pick up an instrument and make it happen!
