This is a great spot. I'd like to add that the reason AFN airs spots like this during regular programing is because their mission is to provide command information. Also, AFN cannot air commercially produced spots because they receive free or discounted programing and because the DoD cannot endorse any product. AFN spots will never be competitive with industry because they don't have the staff or training to do the job that industry does with an entire crew of seasoned writers and producers.
Yeah, they got pretty annoying. I could list quite a few spots I remember from Misawa. Being there from 02-08, I remember watching a couple that were still running and were recorded before I PCS'd in. Just a few I remember that were newer: The guy getting zapped by lightning, the "Misawa Shuffle", the female TSgt driving around slower than a snail telling us to obey the speed limit, The car with it's stereo volume too loud. It all made me read books instead of TV.
The problem with AFN spots is they asked us to make too many too fast. The same thing happens with the cable companies making local commercials--they make so many, they don't have time to make quality spots. And all the business are satisfied with crap, so it evens out.
There's just a much bigger rotation of spots on commercial television.
AFN needs to abolish commercials all together. Or only put spots between programming, not during.
It's neat to see something from Misawa. I spent a total of about 6 months there over the course of 3 trips when I was the network engineer on the CITS project.
It's a pretty nice place over there, it was a hot humid summer the year I was there though. I left just before Christmas, but the snow was already piling up, they have some serious snow plows on base. They didn't seem to do any plowing off base!
They don't show this one anymore which sucks because it was actually decent compared to the shit they have now. I think the best one yet is the bomb threat call with Osama bin laden.
I made this one years ago--they said "We need an ORM spot by Monday" on a Friday...so me and the two guys appearing in the spot stayed up until about 1am shooting it at the dorms, and I stayed up the rest of the night editing. I think it was the last spot I did before I left. They're still airing my Prepare Your Will spot, though.
Does anyone remember the PSA spot with the rappers that aired in Misawa in the late 80's. I just remember them saying "freeze" and "police."

Honest to goodness, I don't know what's funnier, the banana peel or the very-fake foot twitch at the end of the video. XD XD XD

this reminds me of the classic one they showed at DINFOS, with the guy stepping into the hibachi and falling over the railing!
