Gavaskar is the best test batman i have ever seen. He opened the innings against all time great speed guns.
All credit of his success goes to - Marshal, Holding, Garner, Andy, Thomson, Lillee, Imran, Surfaraj, Hadlee, Ian, Abdul and many great bowlers of that era.
I was there at this game as a 6 year old. Great innings by Gavaskar. What a sight to see malcolm steaming in. The police threw chocolates when he scored a hundred and bubble gum when he scored 200 and I caught one :)..pure bliss
Sunil Gavaskar : the 1st Indian batsman to actually resist or fight against the MIGHTY 70-80s fast bowlers.. Never wore a Helmet either.. Not as swashbuckling as King Viv but brought gr8 pride to Indians as their 1st World Class batsman who not only broke world records but Created them.. 30+ Test Centuries ; 10,000+ Test runs.. Respect..
Gavaskar, in his book "Idols", mentioned that had he been allowed to bat further, he would have gone on to score India's first triple century in this test as it was heading for a draw, but captain Kapil declared the innings with a few hours left in the match, so that he (Kapil) could bowl, get a wicket or 2 and winThums Up Man of the series award (that award was based on number of wickets and runs scored).
@sppati123 Well thats Sunil alright, always thinking of himself. Just about the worst team man of all time. He is probably just jealous of Sehwag.....
Thanks rob, this is unbelievable, never thought this footage was available, do you have more detailed highlights like 15 minutes or more of this and the delhi 100 (I have seen that also again a first) Thanks a lot. Do you have Marshall's 6/37 at Eden Gardens in this series.
236, against WI at their peak. Dont even mention the likes of Dravid et al, Gavaskar's record against amazing bowling - indeed with a sun-hat on - is without question, superior.
wow . . . havnt heard a road like tht recently! mustve been pure joy for every single person in tht stadium. unlike the hooligans today for whom shouting at a cricket match is a trend.
@waqas7532 Talented could be subjective. IMHO, Vijay Merchant and Vishwanath could be the greatest raw talents ever to come out of the nation. Gavaskar and Dravid were technically superlative.
As a famous Calypsonian Lord Relator hummed back in 1971: ''It was Gavaskar,da rell masta(the real master),just like a wall we couldnt out Gavaskar at all,not at all,you know de West Indies couldnt out Gavaskar at all !''
Sweet.Thank you for the upload!Never had a chance to see this before.

Whilst I highly despise this man for his extremely horrid sportsmanship, he is a great cricketer, and this is one innings that proves that point.

i hated two batsman in those days: gavaskar and richards. they never used to stop scoring runs...one at a slow pace and the later at very fast pace.
