I'm gonna somewhat go against the tide here and say that a couple of the Black Album songs did..sound thrashy. Take a look at Holier Than Thou, Of Wolf and Man, (maybe) My Friend of Misery. This proved that Bob Rock hadn't fully fucked them in the ass just yet. I blame this on the corporatism of the music industry, Bob Rock, and the boundless love for money. You just wish Cliff never died and Mustaine staying in the band, but..whatever.
the black album has some significant traces of a thrash band somewhere like almost fighting the evil corporate money machine but they did sign in blood so it's a very watered down trace of their former selves. The system that is in place in america with coast to coast radio & tv manipulation has managed to dumb people down to the point where only music with enough sugar coating sing along melodies can be played on rotation, ofcourse they need alot of money if they want to be considered for it.
When you say that the black album has sugar coated singalong melodies, I think that's always been an ingredient in their songwriting. The melodies on the black album could be deemed 'sugar coated' because they are more apparent. But even on other songs like For Whom The Bell Tolls or Master Of Puppets, lyrical hooks are used. Metallica were never top of the big 4 thrash bands in the 80s because they were the fastest or the most technical, but because they wrote the most memorable songs.
With the whole MTV thing and doing the video for One, the story I heard was that back in the day fans could call up MTV and request music videos from their favorite bands. Metallica fans did that before One aired and obviously couldn't see anything, so that's what made them decide to make it in the first place. I don't know how true that story goes cause it came from Lar's mouth but it's not entirely unbelievable.
Another example, if you ask any girls in the audience at any metallica show today,"what is your favorite metallica song?" they will usually give you the typical answer "Enter Sandman", "One", "the black album", or anything & everything after the black album. Proof positive that they sold out because women don't have the brain function to digest THRASH METAL, it's angry aggressive neanderthal music to them, MOST will opt for anything on the hard rock side of metal for sure, estrogen = fail.

St.Anger was shit but at least it was a right step in the right direction. I'm also glad they fired Bob Rock and went back to thrashing it out, though after the drastic result of St.Anger I didn't really have any expectations for Death Magnetic but it was a surprisingly good return to form and has won back a lot of fans who left them in the past. But Megadeth have also done the same thing and Slayer did as well after Diablous. Everyone should be allowed to put out something different.
yeah, they can test the waters, why not? but the fact remains, they thought they were being innovative and changing directions and pretty much taking a breather, but why did they try to go back to thrash? because they realized glam metal & fame was all just a passing infatuation, it was all hot air, and they needed to go back to what they knew best and first, thrash metal yet again, it was too far too late.
They just needed a push in the right direction and Rick Rubin gave them that. In my opinion they could have released a thrash album whenever they wanted to and the success of DM proves it. Right time right place I guess..

They know they did wrong, they just did attempted to do thrash again 4 the fans.
But yeah I think they could have gone on to do albums in the same vein of AJFA and MOP. Given their large fan base it wouldn't have been such a risk, but on the other hand there's always the danger of burning out. So I guess James wanted to sing for a change and Kirk wanted to explore solos that would suit a song instead of just simply wanking his fretboard off.
At least when bands like Metallica and Megadeth release albums I'll anticipate what they're gonna sound like. I'd rather a band release an album that's different than a band churning out the same old stuff time and time again which is why I couldn't give a shit about the latest ACDC album cause there's nothing innovative about it.
Oh I've been let down by St.Anger and the last 3 Megadeth albums but like I said I won't lose any sleep over it. And funny how self righteous people are especially the metalheads who think they can dictate what good taste is in the first place.
i'm not saying i am the god of arrogance(not quite there yet) but I do have enough experience playing in different genres of music, I've seen trends come & go & it's impossible to tell people that what they're vested in is low grade quality, they won't realize it until a far off day & marketing companies know this. There's no doubt the industry sets trends to influence people's taste in music, more so today than 10 years ago. But I still believe they released the black album more as an attempt to challenge themselves and diversify. It could easily have turned out to be a load of shit like Megadeth's Risk was.
St. Anger was the only album I felt they let themselves down, adopting nu metal trends. Kinda like Slayer did with Diablous In Musica.
ok what happened with the black album was more of a result of realizing that they were about to burn out playing such technically demanding songs on tour, Lars especially after tasting fame with their "one" video and the opportunity to play with bands like GnR was star struck and fell in love with Axl, they then decided to go back to playing simple tributes to classic rock, the stuff they grew up on therefore enabling themselves to be marketed alongside such cool acts like GnR....
... their label said hell yes, GnR made more money than god with their debut, let's get some people in here like Bob Rock to help in the 'transition'. The simple fact was that Metallica was not ment to be a rock band, while you are fine with this, they were simply not fit for this money making transition, they should have called themselves something other than Metallica in the first place because the change was way too far fetched. It was a spinal tap moment, they knew it too...
I still think bands have a right to make the transition as long as the results aren't too drastic. Megadeth obviously opted to go from thrash to slower tempo rock with musical hooks and even got Trust a number 1 spot on the billboards. Slayer started downtuning their guitars in 98 when nu metal was trendy.
ok the real transition with megadeth is vastly different because while metallica were at the top of their game with...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL they pretty much assaulted their fans with the transition, the garage ep was no indication at all, megadeth had already dissapointed and made a smoother transition with countdown to extinction & youthanasia then cryptic writing, all irrelevant because they were watered down crap, people stopped listening to mustaine, then risk came along and nobody noticed

the black album has some significant traces of a thrash band somewhere like almost fighting the evil corporate money machine but they did sign in blood so it's a very watered down trace of their former selves. The system that is in place in america with coast to coast radio & tv manipulation has managed to dumb people down to the point where only music with enough sugar coating sing along melodies can be played on rotation, ofcourse they need alot of money if they want to be considered for it.

When you say that the black album has sugar coated singalong melodies, I think that's always been an ingredient in their songwriting. The melodies on the black album could be deemed 'sugar coated' because they are more apparent. But even on other songs like For Whom The Bell Tolls or Master Of Puppets, lyrical hooks are used. Metallica were never top of the big 4 thrash bands in the 80s because they were the fastest or the most technical, but because they wrote the most memorable songs.

With the whole MTV thing and doing the video for One, the story I heard was that back in the day fans could call up MTV and request music videos from their favorite bands. Metallica fans did that before One aired and obviously couldn't see anything, so that's what made them decide to make it in the first place. St.Anger was shit but at least it was a right step in the right direction. I'm also glad they fired Bob Rock and went back to thrashing it out, though after the drastic result of St.Anger I didn't really have any expectations for Death Magnetic but it was a surprisingly good return to form and has won back a lot of fans who left them in the past. But Megadeth have also done the same thing and Slayer did as well after Diablous. Everyone should be allowed to put out something different.

Given their large fan base it wouldn't have been such a risk, but on the other hand there's always the danger of burning out. i'm not saying i am the god of arrogance(not quite there yet) but I do have enough experience playing in different genres of music, I've seen trends come & go & it's impossible to tell people that what they're vested in is low grade quality, they won't realize it until a far off day & marketing companies know this. The fact is bands have a short life span in terms of originality & innovation & faketallica is long overdue for the glue factory. I'm just hoping they stop embarrasing us like this..

There's no doubt the industry sets trends to influence people's taste in music, more so today than 10 years ago. But I still believe they released the black album more as an attempt to challenge themselves and diversify. It could easily have turned out to be a load of shit like Megadeth's Risk was.
St. Anger was the only album I felt they let themselves down, adopting nu metal trends. Kinda like Slayer did with Diablous In Musica.

ok what happened with the black album was more of a result of realizing that they were about to burn out playing such technically demanding songs on tour, Lars especially after tasting fame with their "one" video and the opportunity to play with bands like GnR was star struck and fell in love with Axl, they then decided to go back to playing simple tributes to classic rock, the stuff they grew up on therefore enabling themselves to be marketed alongside such cool acts like GnR....

... their label said hell yes, GnR made more money than god with their debut, let's get some people in here like Bob Rock to help in the 'transition'. The simple fact was that Metallica was not ment to be a rock band, while you are fine with this, they were simply not fit for this money making transition, they should have called themselves something other than Metallica in the first place because the change was way too far fetched. It was a spinal tap moment, they knew it too...

I still think bands have a right to make the transition as long as the results aren't too drastic. Megadeth obviously opted to go from thrash to slower tempo rock with musical hooks and even got Trust a number 1 spot on the billboards. Slayer started downtuning their guitars in 98 when nu metal was trendy.

ok the real transition with megadeth is vastly different because while metallica were at the top of their game with...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL they pretty much assaulted their fans with the transition, the garage ep was no indication at all, megadeth had already dissapointed and made a smoother transition with countdown to extinction & youthanasia then cryptic writing, all irrelevant because they were watered down crap, people stopped listening to mustaine, then risk came along and nobody noticed
