wynton strikes me as a cocky asshole. buuuut u cant deny that he's amazing aaaaannnd he has the sickest trumpet ever with what seems like a built-in mouth pieces. idk some nerd will probably correct me later
Wynton has great respect for what he playing in this song and delivers a powerful solo with astonishing technique. His circular breathing at the end of his solo wasn't just showing off. Everyone plays with a heightened connection here, paying respect to the original and tradition. Just enjoy it, the players seem to be.
I'm not hating what he does. We need to put it in the right place but he's not the savior of jazz. All the cats in the past was great but if Bird played 50yrs before his time he would be playing brassbands. I'm sure the cats in the past can play in a modern setting. SBechet played a lot of saxophone but Trane modernized the sound with use of harmony. We don't need young Guys to hold down old music. The old cats did it well!
Sure Wynton is talented and arguably a great trumpet player. His attitude is his personality. Personality is one thing music is another! I don't like to put the two together. What I was saying about him playing turn arounds, if you listen to his solo on this song he don't really play the turn around going to the 4 chord and he play basic turn around going to the top of tune! Just listen.
That is the way he play. Turn around was very important to the advancement of jazz music. that is the difference between Dizzy and Roy Eldridge. Bird and Buster Smith or Trane and Dexter. Being famous is different than musical advancement especially today!
. Jazz was a music that transcend styles but still sound modern. Armstrong, Bird, Hawk, Miles and Trane were used to make the popular music of the day, sound artistic and modern. Jazz is suppose to bring music up to date it's not a period. Wynton is a good preparer but not an innovator. He actually influenced Jazz as period and not a creative force
From Reese Europe, Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins to Monk, Bird and Diz through Miles Davis and Trane you hear the intricate development of understanding the turnarounds harmonically and extending the rhythm and fitting the rhythm in with the harmonic concepts but in a story telling manner not a formulated manner. This is what made the music modern.
I highly agree. I think he is very talented and very skilled, but is trapped by his love of Armstrong and Clifford Brown. He needs to be more open to what's going on around him. Jazz evolves.
@Bluesmen88 not necessarily...he's holding it down for the old school..while new school cats are taking things in new directions...you need the foundation before you can branch off..and he's keeping that strong...cant be mad at em for that
I know I know, jazz from that era is actually some of my favorite, but watching Ken Burns Jazz I noticed he was very sparce on Coltranes 60's work, and it just annoyed me because I find his music during that era just so moving. I just think he's a bit narrow minded even on jazz from the past.
Wynton is a good trumpet player but he's far from being the real innovator that he is striving for. If you really study jazz and understand the innovations and contributions rhythmically and harmonically you can hear a persons place in the music.
Wynton takes a lot from Clifford Brown and Booker Little (especially Booker's compositions), but he really has his own sound. Lots of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong in the mix, too. His drawback is that he's preachy and pretentious.
Maybe so but from what I hear from the early years is Freddie Hubbard and Nat Adderley. Then Louie and Oliver. Clifford? maybe. I know he played Clifford's solo with Sarah Vaughn. He also remind me of Charlie Shavers and Clark Terry. His interpretation of jazz is old. He doesn't use modern devices like playing bebop style turn around's. He choose to play in the key of the chords and not harmonic movements that came from bebop style to today!
...You're kidding, right? I'm not gonna be "that guy" who directs you to EVERY turnaround he plays that isn't inside the chords...but check out 3:28 for instance. This has nothing to do with my opinion of Wynton, I'm just using my ears objectively.
Look...all of the greats are just that...GREAT. Great also comes (and rhymes with) hate. Wynton, Miles, Prince, Sting...the list goes on. The public is going to find something about that person to hate. Michael Jordan was too cocky, yet, who could stop him. Randy Moss, too cocky! Who can stop him. Wynton has practiced to be what and where he is. Name an overall better trumpeter right now. Do the same with Prince. Some people even rag on Stevie Wonder. That's just the way it is!
Man, that ain't true. All that B.S. about him being a dick came from all the old trumpet players who resented Wynton's talent when he busted on the scene at 18 years old. And you know what, they still same the same crap about him cause they're ignorant when they should be applauding him for everything he's done for jazz. Have YOU ever met Wynton and hung out with him? He's a very nice cat.
I haven't actually met him, but I have a friend who takes lessons from him when he isn't touring and he said that he's very pretentious. Also, I was talking to a guy who played lead with a band he was soloing with, and he said that wynton would just have this arrogant devil may care attitude whenever he came into rehearsal. It isn't entirely his fault, though... I mean, fame does funny things to people
You know what, I heard that same thing about his attitude. I mean for a guy who appears to be all about the music he's no Count Basie or Duke Ellington when it comes to his attitude towards his fellow musicians.
There is a Hurricane in this night, and he is called "Elvin".

Wynton's a fabulous ambassador for jazz. However, he can't touch Blanchard or Payton in the realm of improvisation and articulation.

@Easleytee this particular solo blows away TB and NP easily. This is far beyond a masterpiece.....
