@abby692216 Huh, funny, my grandmother was deaf and I have signed my entire life, I even took a class in college. I think she does a great job. Perhaps, you should go back to trolling the Justin Bieber fan sites.
@sambomuaythaijack I'm Not Trying To Troll? Some Comments Are Even Ruder Than Mine, I Do Apologize For Saying She's A Bad Teacher. But Honestly She's Not Very Good. At Least The Lady Tried.(: Once Again I Don't Troll.
if i was really deaf i wouldnt watch this because she doesnt even do the letters one by one its very difficult and doesnt make it easy to learn the alphabets -____-
Better to learn ASL the wrong way than to not learn it at all. Think of all the hearing people who use grammar wrong and speak incorrectly yet they are somewhat understandable, but yeah this lady isn't very good.
what's up with all these useless negative comments. If you think she's wrong, say exactly *what* she's doing wrong. I honestly don't see much difference between her and what I see illustrated in sign language books. Negative comments are welcome, but be specific.
It's not shocking to find out she's a "weather specialist" and not an actual SL educator. She should stick with making "How To Sign Up For Facebook" videos.
I am deaf and I cannot understand a word she is saying, but I know exactly that she is doing, everything almost perfect and dont be mean about the letter A. Thats how I learned it.
@RaptorLuv, Sign IS NOT universal. There is BSL(British Sign Language) ISL(Irish Sign Language) FSL(French Sign Language) ASL (American Sign Language) and ALL are different. Sign Language is like any other language in that it varies by country. She sounds Canadian and may be signing the Canadian version of Sign.
So if this is not the correct alphabet in ASL then where might one find the right one? I'm taking a class in college in this is what we have learned and every where I've looked online has the same thing.
@Tamsin2010 Well it might be because she's doing it to be sure the handshape is understood, but generally you wouldn't spell things that far out from your body and that high up. Also, her A, G, and H are the only letters I find awkward, but this could be due to the region she's from. Maybe they sign it differently which is always a possibility. Different regions have different signs whether completely or partially.
No. She's doing it this way because she doesn't know any better. She's is NOT a fluent signer. She's simply looking this stuff up in a book and putting together lessons to make money off it. (ExpertVillage pays her to do this).
even though sign language is universal some of the expressions are different and some alphabet letters are different also. like in europe some letters are diff and in asia too
....why is this alphabet different from the one that I know? ...and my friend knows...and different from every deaf person I've met....? I know that some people do the letters a little different like people pronounce words different in certain areas....that's it right?
No, KoriKitti! You are correct! This lady is teaching the ASL alphabets all wrong! I am taking a ASL class at my college and believe me, she is erroring quite a bit. You are correct in your assumption!
Thanks for the confirmation. ^^ I hate getting my languages mixed up. In Spanish some people pronounce double l's as "y" and some pronounce is as "j". I personally pronounce it with a y, but there are so many exceptions to linguistic rules!
Lady, what ARE you teaching..? A number of the alphabets you're teaching are WRONG, including the very first alphabet itself. --' Please refrain from teaching others the wrong thing. You're gonna make the people who learn from you a laughing stock.
Too late. She's already a laughingstock. But she also makes certified teachers like myself very disappointed because she's taking advantage of my language to make money.
@xktgx33 Excuse me, but you do not pay to learn the alphabet from me. I give that knowledge away freely to everyone. What I DO offer though, is in-depth, low-cost lessons on how to accurately and correctly learn ASL from someone who has spent years studying how to teach and is a certified ASL teacher. But, if you'd rather learn from this woman who is incorrectly "teaching" signs that she self-taught herself from a book, then THAT is lame.
@BYUFanatic Excuse me, but I never said I did. And you're still taking advantage of knowing your language to get money out of it. Not saying it's wrong, but if you're going to talk down to others for doing the same, it seems...inappropriate. You are a teacher, and you do deserve to get money for your services to others, but I believe you're showing yourself in a rather unprofessional manner.
@xktgx33 Actually, yes you DID say that. In fact, you used the word "lame" in sharing your opinion of it. Interesting that you would say I am "taking advantage" of my knowledge of ASL. If I was offering Spanish lessons or French lessons, people like you wouldn't be so rude. But, because people like you view ASL as only a sort of "quasi-language" you feel that it should be offered for free because it's "not really a language." [continued...]
[continued...] In fact, if you want to talk about "taking advantage" then you should be aware that this woman who made this videos knows absolutely NOTHING about ASL. She couldn't carry on a conversation with a Deaf person to save her life. And yet, she is getting PAID by "expertvillage" for these lessons. I bet you didn't know that did you? Now THAT is taking advantage of ME, MY CULTURE, and MY LANGUAGE. That is what I would consider to be "unprofessional" and "lame." (To use your words.)
@BYUFanatic Final comments on this... I am VERY professional in my teaching style and in how I defend my language and culture. I've put together a top quality website that teaches my language in an organized and in-depth manner (rather than random videos). I have such a passion for sharing my language that I offer my lessons for dirt-cheap while others charge as much as $30 or more for one lesson module. I also have over two dozen FREE videos on my YouTube channel. Yep, lame indeed.
@BYUFanatic Yes, I did know that she gets paid for these videos. She doesn't deserve it, I might add, but that doesn't change anything. If there's a demand for something and people can use that knowledge or make it look plausible, then they're going to do what they can to make that knowledge worthwhile. Still, you're taking advantage of your knowledge about the subject, whether you like to admit it or not. By getting paid for knowing something others don't, you take advantage of it.
@xktgx33, that's the most bizarre statement. "By getting paid for knowing something other's don't, you take advantage of it." No, actually, he's getting paid to TEACH something other's don't know, and they (the paying customers) are getting something of value in exchange. In your mind, teachers don't deserve payment. Why, exactly? And why does this woman, who is NOT a teacher, deserve to get paid? The information she is sharing is false. She is tricking people into thinking she is a teacher.
@Banerika Why are you following this? Especially when I clearly told him "You are a teacher, and you do deserve to get money for your services to others". That's a quote from a previous comment of mine. Go argue elsewhere.
@xktgx33, I'm following this because I've made it my mission to make others aware that this woman is banking on other people's ignorance. I'd like people to know that this is not ASL, and that she is not an expert. She is spreading misconceptions about the language with each and every view she receives.
@xktgx33 You apparently have a problem with accurately expressing yourself. "Taking advantage of" something is generally considered a negative term. So is the word "lame" (you called me this earlier). Do I "admit" that I am creating a quality product that people happily purchase because they know they're getting their money's worth? Yes. Am I tricking people by pretending to be something I'm not? No. I'm still scratching my head to try and figure out what point you're trying to make.
@BYUFanatic Taking advantage of your knowledge and taking advantage of other people are two different things. In this case, it would be taking advantage of the lack of prior knowledge that other people have (for this women). Taking advantage of the innocence that others have would probably be a better wording for it. Taking advantage of does have negative connotations but I do believe it means to use something for your own gain. Correct? I do want to state again that in my eyes you do (cont.)
@BYUFanatic Deserve what you get, and probably more than you do charge, but you're still talking down to this person. You're not just making others aware; you're making them aware in an obnoxious way. Commenting once on each video would have been okay, but commenting multiple times on each video while insulting her is not, even if she does deserve it. Being able to hold your composure in a situation like this is what I consider professional, and not being able to do so projects the opposite.
@xktgx33 "Talking down" to a person who is the equivalent of a "carpetbagger"? Again, interesting choice of words. What you call "obnoxious," others do not. I get many comments from others who are grateful that I have cautioned them about learning from people like this woman. My comments are factual and to the point. If you consider that unprofessional then that's your problem, not mine. As for why I comment more than once - it's because most people only read the first page or two of comments.
@BYUFanatic Repeating something numerous times with a rude tone isn't obnoxious? Since you can't be loud through text, you seem to make up for it with the number of comments you leave. There's a line between letting people know what's going on with this woman and letting your anger show.
@xktgx33 Ah, but it's ok for you to be rude by calling me "lame?" Isn't that kinda like the kettle calling the pot black? What you consider obnoxious, I consider righteous indignation. After all, it's MY language and MY culture that this woman is exploiting for personal profit while blatantly spreading false information and misperceptions. How silly of me to express my displeasure for her actions.
@xktgx33. I don't think you see the point. The reason BYUFanatic and many others make multiple comments is because this is the only way to impact the perception that people have that she is some kind of expert, which is ludicrous. Is it obnoxious to inform others that she is not an expert, and not teaching ASL? I don't think so. I think she's the obnoxious one here. The rest of of us are trying to inform people so they are not tricked or fooled, nor embarrassed by what they "learn" from her.
@xktgx33. There's a saying. "It's not mean if it's true." Presenting the facts, and exposing her as false, isn't mean. It's just truthful. Personally, when someone bothers to inform me of the truth, rather than let me remain ignorant, I am grateful.
@Banerika But calling you a laughing stock in the progress of letting you know that you're wrong is okay with you? That's a little hard to believe. I highly doubt you'd appreciate that. And it's okay to let people know, but numerous times on a single video is a little much, especially with more than one person already confirming the same thing.
@xktgx33, when someone is blatantly and knowingly making money at other people's expense, while foolishly making numerous blatant errors, she is a laughing stock. Pointing it out saves others the embarrassment of believing in her false advertising. Few people look past the first few comments, so that's why it's necessary to keep commenting. Personally I think she is exploitative and should pull her videos from YouTube voluntarily.
@BYUFanatic I apologize for using the word 'it'. A very unspecific word that did not get my point across. I meant that you still have to pay to learn sign language as a whole from your website. I deserve to have the bad choice of words to be picked apart like that, but what I do not deserve is for you to shove assumptions in my mouth. I realize that sign language is a full-on language with it's own rules and history and that it should be respected as such.
xktgx33, what do you mean that he is "taking advantage of knowing" his language? Did you know that he has three degrees in the subject area, years of experience teaching ASL, and has dedicated his career to helping as many people as possible learn it? While Melissa is a broadcast personality/weather girl who is using *your* unfamiliarity with ASL to her advantage in order to make money. She's not teaching ASL, and BYUFanatic is doing EVERYONE a favor by informing them of this fact.
Don't learn from this "expert." Don't tell me it's an accent. Accept that she is often wrong and find a better reference out there. For the manual alphabet, I suggest CreativeHandsASL. You can find her on YouTube. She is a CODA, meaning child of deaf adults.
I learned sign language when I was 12, from my best friend whos parents were both deaf. It really helped. This isnt exactly the way I learned but I learned a long time ago. I could be wrong. Good luck!
yes that is not a k, a k looks more like a peace sign, and some others are of like g and h there the right shape but the person recieving the signs wouldnt be able to tell the difference
Although some of the signs are similar, they are completely different languages. One major difference is fingerspelling. In ASL every letter of the alphabet is done with one hand and in BSL every letter besides "C" is done with two hands. Also, most of the signs are completely different.

Don't learn from this "expert." Don't tell me it's an accent. Accept that she is often wrong and find a better reference out there. For the manual alphabet, I suggest CreativeHandsASL. You can find her on YouTube. She is a CODA, meaning child of deaf adults.

Sorry, that's CreativehandsASL. The video is entitled: Learn the manual alphabet in sign language (ASL)

AngelofJeath 3 years ago

Are BSL and ASL kind of the same or are they way different?
fritters2 3 years ago
bsl is Britain sign language i think and asl is american sign language but hey i dont know
candygurlnatasha 3 years ago
Although some of the signs are similar, they are completely different languages. One major difference is fingerspelling. In ASL every letter of the alphabet is done with one hand and in BSL every letter besides "C" is done with two hands. Also, most of the signs are completely different.

A, G, and H are all wrong. Close, but turned wrong. Good try and good for starters.

Apparently she's not fluent in ASL, since she's horrible and the alphabet should be the easiest to learn.
