I've read on other DW vid postings that the NP Daleks were made bigger to accomodate their operators; as HD allows you to see everything, and the BBC didn't want the operators to be seen, they had the grills replaced, too.
But shouldn't there be enough room inside for some computer/radio controlled machinery, obviating the need for an operator? I don't see why in this modern age, computers couldn't control most if not all Dalek functions.
I think the main problem is that the new Daleks haven't been given a proper episode. They go through this big change and evidently have all these new features, but we haven't seen any of them. I understand the new writers wanted to give them a rest, but what the point of changing them at all if you're not going to use them after.
But personally, I have no problem with the new shape. It's the colors. They want five colors, fine. Why not white, black, silver, gold, and red.
I've been watching Doctor Who for most of my 41 years and I must say I DESPISE these Daleks. They look like plastic and I suspect this design was at least in part a very cynical attempt to sell more toys. Let's face it, that's what they look like (esp. w/the candy colours). I know the opening on the back is for special weapons, but it looks like the plastic covers you snap onto unused inputs on a smart phone. I also agree completely about the "neck grille"--it's completely ludicrous.
I hate people defending the fact that the daleks are fat because of some stored weopon behind it... for god sake people, this new daleks have made their appearence 2 years ago and have had a full story, a action game and a cameo ap, so far and never have we seen this. I hear enough people go mad and calling people "idiots" because they dont know about this but how the hell are we suposse to know,or be impressed by it? and why the hell does a dalek need such thing why ruin a perfect design model?

They could use a diet but the most damning things are the lack of the grill and the paint job. However I would say they just need to get someone in there that can paint better. The color choices aren't BAD per say, but whoever did it was lazy and didn't bother to mix the right paint or use the right techniques to give the new Daleks a metallic look.
@weepingangel7 The beeping sound is the "Dalek control room" sound effect (also known as the "Dalek Heartbeat" that's featured as background noise in almost all the TV Dalek tales from 1963 onwards. When you hear it, you know you're in the Daleks' domain!
The back thing stores weapons, like the assault daleks in series one with their claws, these daleks have stuff in those hatches, and the weapons come up on to the rail that goes around the midsection, and replace the plunger or gun with something more specific.
@mikeismad61 I think they will, the paradigm thing is probs just temporary. In the Doctor Who Experience the classic Daleks fight the new, so I hope that'll be carried into the show.
Also the Cybermen have already met the new Daleks, and won, in Doctor Who Live :)

I think these Daleks are WAY scarier than the other models. Although, they would look better if they were like battle droids from star wars and only had certain parts with the bright colours. And the "thing" on the back is an exaust vent. Don't you think that Daleks don't get all hot and sweaty inside that tank?

to be honest, i dont like Russles daleks much or the new ones, I like the classic renegade daleks from Resurrection of the Daleks and Genesis of the daleks. I like the grey look about them.
The head is low detailed. The colour is ridiculous. They are too tall. Their base is completely round. Their Shoulder section is too small. They're missing slats. They have less hemispheres. They have an odd pannel at the back (To replace the pannels?).
Personally, I dig the whole candy-colored retro Dalek look. But I agree that the "spine" is all wrong. They should've kept their backs straight, and their original height.

@clokkerfoot If you check up "derrieres" on "reverso,net", a free internet translation service, you'll get the translation "backs". But "derriere" can be used in various ways, i.e. "back" "behind" or "buttocks", (on a Dalek, they all amount to the same thing anyway!) depending on the context!
@TardisGeek ive seen pictures that the guy who designed the daleks, and some of his original drawings the daleks look the same but they have grills on the back and slightly bigger base.

Yes, it was played in the background as part of the "jolly holiday" atmosphere that concealed the murky goings-on in the colony! It was intended as a bright, superficial piece that I thought fitted tne New Paradigm Daleks perfectly!
@leopardgeckocrazy I agree. They looked better live than they did in the dreadful "Victory", one of the worst Dr Who stories ever, in my opinion. I have nothing against these new models. An update was inevitable. All I want is a decent story for them. "Victory" was comparatively a lot worse than the new Daleks themselves. Even traditional Daleks couldn't save a plot involving aeroplanes in space.
The back panel opens to reveal extra weaponery & the like. But don't worry. The old Daleks are coming back. St6even Moffat says that the new Daleks are simply an officer class, and that the time war design will be used as a lower ranking class of Dalek.
there are so many good dalek designs here on you tube doctor who fans are a so creative. the doctor who production team should take a serious look at the ideas offered here on you tube.
i think there colourful cas the old daleks(before 2005) were colourful aswell, so it would make
