as long as you arent cramming 3 extra people in the cabin and dont have full fuel, you should be able to deem if you are over gross or within CG range easily
first of all, this is not a C-172, it is a C-182.... If you look at the airplane from the rear, flaps seem to be fully extended.... in my opinion... lack of experience + poor weight & balance... sad to see this kind of news
It looks like to me that the pilot took off with his flaps down and he couldnt get altitude plus over load the plane, all the wrong things together ! That is really sad !
It wan't necessary to have the stick back so far. (OK it's not a stick) but this poor pilot just didn't have the feel for flying or he would have saved everyone by pushing forward and gaining some airspeed.
definately weight but the aircraft did get off the ground as was climbing. only just!!! if the pilot was able to keep the nose down who nknows he may have been able to get up and back down.
@pgden2 It doesn't look as though the plane was able to leave ground effect. The only thing the pilot could do was ditch or climb into a stall, then ditch harder.
@stepheng101 ground effect is in effect to a height of about 1-1.5xwingspan and yes the pilot may have been just at this height. Hovever he was well above the persons/obsticles below. He may have been able to hold his height just above evryone. As airspeed inc lift would have also center of pressure would have moved backwards and the higher airspeed would have meant more airflow over elevator meaning more controllability. We can only learn from ths pilots mistakes.
@bzubrod Easier said than done, look at flying instructors if they have 8 training flights a day it's impossible to sit down before each flight and do them. But in this case yes it should have been done...
@mattyccc2009 Instructors fly under the same conditions every day so they can do it in their head if they will be in balance or not. You always should atleast know for a fact you will be in CG and if there is ever a doubt do a W&B sheet. I can do them in less than a minute. Small price to pay for potentially saving your life.
Pure pilot error.

we can't call this guy a pilot... no words to describe this.
one thing is right...he isn't a pilot...at last a airplane pilot...i guess.
sorry...but is sad one situation like this one.
thanks

gotta keep in ground effect and get the speed up. some float time would have taught that. as long as we dont do it again. sad

I believe the plane is a C182, not a C172.

pilots fault. you have to pay attention to weight limitations.

It seems the airplane was overweight because it was overweight
