i have 7 of those carburetors they are a pain in the neck to get exact that's why gm used holley on there performance engines holley is good edelbrock carbs are better.
No I don't have a divorced thermostat, its on an '86 olds. And i know there is no vacuum to the choke itself, only to lift the choke plate so its not flooding. As soon as the engine starts there will be vacuum and then a diafragm releases the coldstart funtion and the plate opens a dimes with.
@sajan67 You're thinking of the heat riser. It runs on vacuum. It closes when the engine starts if its cold, and then opens once it warms up. The choke on this carburetor does not run off any vacuum supply. The thermostatic spring does unwind allowing the choke plate to open while the engine is warming up. The choke setup on this carburetor is purely electronic. If I pull the pigtail to it, it will flood. If I pull all vacuum to the carb the choke will work. Next Comment

@TheYoshiClan Hello sir, Im going to try to help labartino1 out. He is my dad and doesnt know enough english to understand you in the video. What happened is that he took the car to get carburetor cleaned and now that he got it he has an issue with the choke plate. It seems to be open at all times which wont let him start up the car. He needs to pump it a lot b4 he gets it going. however i cant understand what is it that you do to get this plate to shut. can you explain please?

okay that makes a bit more sense. if it wasnt snowing a ton of snow right now id do a video tomorrow. Ill have to check to see what the plate is doing. When i first got the car it started no problem. then the more i drove it the worst starting and running got. I took it to a garage that a friend of the family works at to get it cleaned out. he has done lots of work on our fleet of cars and trucks but nothing this "like new" as my car is.
@thestuffz Youre getting snow right now, all the snow melted here today. Vacuum leaks and worn out spark plugs maybe a leaking spark plug wire is to blame if the car doesn't run good on the highway. If you do have to adjust it, dont send the car in, I know the small shops around here charge 70 bucks to adjust the choke. Notice fuel went up again eh? How much is fuel where you are must be over 6 bucks a gallon now.
@TheYoshiClan yup its coming down hard. was forecasted 6 inches over night. might get 2 feet now it sounds like. its just fricking miserable out.. snow was almost gone to!. ya the mileage when i first got it was very very good. was doing almost 30 on the highway and now its down to about 20 (well thats what i got last year to rushmore and back). fuel is 1.229/liter (4.67/us gallon)

It's not the thermostatic spring that opens up the plate so it doesn't flood, it's the vacuum after the engine starts!
But still a good video!
I wathced a few, because i have some trouble with my carb... seems someone not knowing what they were doing has don some fixing...
I'm starting to understand this carb now, so now i will try to get it right!

@sajan67 Your Carburetor may have a divorced choke, if it does then yeah yours probably runs off of a vacuum source, while mine does not.

I tried to answer from my phone earlier.. Turns out the answers ended up as comments instead...
Well, if you look at this video ( youtube dot com /)watch?v=MzCEcrj6aMM&feature=related
skip ahead to 7.03, because he talks too much :-P
But he shows you what i mean. The TECHNICAL term he's trying too hard to find is "cold start release" i think.
