The information about hermit crabs on expert village is mostly wrong. If you have any question about hermit crabs (purple pincher), please write me a message or comment on my page. I will be happy to help :)
I don't trust expert village when it comes to crabs they only tell you about the basics not details. I would advise you to talk to your local pet shop keeper they can give you a lot of care info and if they don't definitely do not buy hermies from them. good luck!! :)
DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS!!!!!!! You need a ten gallon tank, driftwood (things to climb on), one salt water dish and one fresh water dish, and a spray bottle that has NEVER had cleaning supplies in it for humidity. You need about 4 inches of substrate so they can burrow. NEVER EVER use painted shells. The inside sticks to the crab. They need more that a sponge because they need to submerge sometimes. Ask me if you have a question about a hermit crab.
@sarahhaspowers hey I'm thinking bout getting a hermit crab and i wanted to know how big a chance hermit crabs can get mites is cuz i don't really want mites scurrying all over the place in my house... so any tips on how to check for mites or get mites off hermit crabs? thanks, write back pleeeaaaassseee :)
@sbyahoo100 You will know if mites are in there. You should avoid any wood besides cork and make sure no kind of plant is growing. If you see a mite (you will see them very easily) clean the cage.
i have a question about how to tell if my hermit crab is a male or female.also is it ok if i dont have anything in the cage for them to climd on except for their coconut house
It's disturbing how many trusted sources for exotic animals get information wrong. A pet store that is local to me keps hermit crabs in BIRD CAGES. no sand, no humidity, improper heating. Don't trust expert village or any main stream pet store (petsco, petsmart). 70% of the time there wrong.
its good if u buy them from breeders,or a unpainted one, painted one r bad for ur hermies even though its pretty, they actually torture da hermies to get in da shells,i seen a video!plz plz dont support painted shells,i been postin this on all hermit crabs video!!
Best habitat for hermit crabs is where they came from - NATURE. I think it's a crying shame how millions, billions have been stolen from the wild (they do not breed in captivity) and exploited and marketed to their death. Sold to little kids as painted windup toys. Sold with tiny little plastic "critter keepers" as a home. Care sheets that suggest a sea sponge for their drinking needs. The sponges are to help with HUMIDITY in a tank not for drinking. They need fresh water!
i strongly agree if you are going to take them out of there habitat at least get them a big cage like a 50 gallon tank and put lots of plants and wood for them to clime on and there are some good live plants for them to have in there tank here is one of the plants that i can think of air plants
eh, ive only got 7 so i have one 40gal for my 3 big ones and a 30gal for my 4 small ones and they seem happy. i change things around though so they always have stuff to explore.
some people cant afford 50 gallons, u know that cost like $200. i have a 10 gallon tank and they love it. well i used to have one like 5 gallons but..ive come a long way. so do u think thats fine? i do agree that whatever the setup they have in that tank is too crowded
also to get them off you run them under warm water... but then again tap water is bad... so get luke warm water and have it handy when your handling these babies
Yes they do sometimes paint the shells then put them in there but other times they paint the shells with the hermits in there and then the hermit crabs are stuck in there and they cant get out to change shells. Also they dont always (if ever) put varnish on painted shells. They dont care about the health of the hermits all they care about is the buck.
i bought my hermit crab in a painted shell, and she is fine. they paint the shells when there is no crab in them (obviously=P) and wait for it to dry, so the hermit crabs cant possibly eat the paint. so its perfectly safe to buy hermit crabs w/ painted shells!
do not play with him yet (sorry if this sounds bossy lol) but newly bought hermit crabs need time to destress (about 1 or 2 weeks) during that time you need to leave them alone change their food and water but do not touch them or play with them. Also i sugest that you get him a friend they dont like to live alone.
Really? have you killed hermits by painting their shells? I doubt it, in truth providing the right non-soluble paints are used there are no serious issues to arise from hermits who choose to entre painted shells.
they dont paint the shells with hermies in them they paint the shells then shove the hermies in there and all the paint is toxic to hermies and the paint will chip and the hermits will eat it and they may die
i just want to point this out. they varnish the shells so the paint cant chip out. on that note, i dont enjoy the painted shells since they are stupid
sorry for the painted shell thing, btw ive had hermies with painted shells and their doing good even after months, well they've already switched them with a natural one. i'm just saying that mine have been ok in painted shells
