Whenever I feel bad about my little job that doesn't pay very much, I just remember Manny, who wishes he could get a little job cleaning toilets or sweeping off cafeteria trays or mopping floors.
@7117Nate Best movie and performance of Jon Voight ever. It punches you right in the soul. A scene that demonstrates a hard but firm lesson from Manny, who probably landed up in jail because of his incompatability with the rule of The Man. But Manny IS The Man to all the lost souls and rebels of this world. He's so fucking cool.
@j80021 the scenario was written by a famous ex-convict, Edward Bunker. This scene really means something that transcend the movie. If all the kids that begin to turn out badly could see (I mean really see) this, it could change their point of view.
@wandererlain But I haven't seen McVicar (thanks). I think you would like films like "Bronson" and "Chopper" (two actual convicts). Did you know the Shakespeare quote given at the end of Runaway train was also the title of the first (and great I might add) Eddie Bunker novel "No beast so fierce". I strongly recommand you this one.
P.S. I think what makes this scene truly great is that Manny at the very end sadly admits he could never do what he's advising Buck to do. Without that part it wouldn't have the same impact.
That's Generation X (Voight) talking to Generation Y (Roberts), particularly what Manny says at the very end. In my own case, that's a rare moment when someone could rightly accuse me of not practicing what I preach.
An' I'ma partyy, EEUH! Yayuh. Sheeit.. I'magota Mardi Gras. I'magota Vegas. An' I'munna go wit enough money in mah pocket ta catch 'em faaahhyn bitches, y'knowhatahmean? Y'know - Ah spend almost every night of mah life dreamin' about this kinda sheeit.
Thanks for putting this up - perfect edit. I was talking to someone about the film and this scene stuck with us. Thanks to you, we were able to throw it onto the big screen and enjoy it instantly. Much appreciated Powerful film with superb acting throughout the entire cast, great soundtrack and beautiful cinematography
I think the true power of this scene is the fact that there is a little of Buck & Manny in all of us. We may be better at controling it, but it's there. Truly, it's the human condition............
One of the great mysteries of cinema is why Voight didn't get an Oscar for one of greatest acting performances of all time....Irving, Olivier, Gielgud?...they wouldn't have got through the audition.Vought inexplicably missed out to William Hurt and worse, the dire Out of Africa won Best Picture!
By the way people............clean that itty bitty spot........clean it for yourself, nobody else. If you don't, how will you explain that to your grandchildren?
@sjje11 Yes, Voight should have won! What a performance. A movie buff friend of mine went to see movie. We talked over phone and I remarked on how great Voight was. He said " Voight is in the movie"? Till this day we'll talk about it when movies come up. Thats acting as an art form. This was the same guy who played "Conrack"!
@BlueRoseRocketBand2 Think Jon Voigt made this movie really work his performance as the ruthless villian was so explosive and powerful, should got an Oscar.
I don,t think it,s a social statement but psychological. If you are willing to compromize your pride, ego, dreams and feelings then you evolve. But if you have the will to be yourself, unchanged under all circumstances you are walking your heroic way to a dead end
@achastos This is a hard lesson that i had to learn (and still am).
they say that free movies on the net damages movie production and earnings. I watched this movie when i was a toddler and the other day i streamed it. Today i got this movie on DVD at the store. My point is, if the film is worth it, we will pay. And this movie is like Manny said "GOLD.
I think the final scene is simply GENIUS!! I think it's impossible to see it and not feel real moved by it!! It should be watched from when they discover the train is going to a dead end - the powerful scene when he disconnects the wagon .... check the girl's face ..... IT SAYS IT ALL!!!!!
I love that scene is such a lesson from Manny.... what a great scene!!!! I love everything about this film!!! John Voight is the ultimate heroe .... such an actor! Erick Roberts proved his talent in this movie!
That might be,but it´s hilarious how some break their backs to blacklist him.And yes,it´s a disgrace that he supported Bush,Shame!.But he has SOME points in his criticism towards Obama.Fuck it!.So actingwise I don´t agree...After this movie he went under ground for unknown reasons fpr 10 years! He returned to film in Heat ´95.After that he never became BIG again, but he´s really good and i prefer the older Voight. The Rainmaker,M:I,Pride And Glory,Ali,Enemy O.T.S, U-Turn, And some crap, yes.
A powerful film with a couple of amazing performances and a soundtrack to match those final spectacular scenes of Jon riding on top of the engine, leaning all his weight into the wind and bitter cold, resigned to his fate -- a violent man all his life because that was what he did best. He couldn't get respect any other way. He lived violently, so he concluded he should go out violently -- especially if he could take out that sadistic warden who represented his life of few legit opportunities
Listen to me when Im talking motherfucker! You gonna clean that spot. you gonna clean that spot! Mores the pity youngster...
nice Im not the only one that loves this film-can still see the guy voight based his character on from the first prison scared straight doc. Peace! gobama!
@HangingTree Totally AGREE with you,,yes one of the greatest movies ever made..for this scene right here,,i have no words :) Awesome.Greetings to you HangingTree and to all Runaway Train fans :)Peace, love and understanding!!!

@dega723 Yes. That's why films like this and MCVICAR are the best prison-themed movies ever.
You get it right from the horse's mouth. That is, reality. Eddie Bunker also played of the RESERVOIR DOGS.
Mr. Blue.

@wandererlain Yes I knew that. He also plays the caracter Jonas in this one : the bald convict, best friend of Many

@dega723 I've seen Chopper. Not bad. Bronson is a tragic case. He got in more trouble in prison than out! Silly fool keep fighting all the time.
I'll have to read that book when I can find it. Money is scarce. Time is plentiful.

The Coca Cola Kid.
Just get it. It's a great film. Great.

One of Jon Voight's finest moments. You want a neat contrast? Compare this with the role he plays in the "National Treasure" films.
