Because the music business is a dirty, dirty animal. Patti was lucky enough to be given carte blanche by Clive Davis who had complete trust in her artistry and vision. Those kinds of people are few and far between in the music business. Commerce almost always usurps art in today's music.

i had this exact same recording on the b-side of a french patti smith 45. it was one of my favorite records from that period and it made my day to hear it again. seeing it was just an extra bonus. many thanks for posting this.
