This song is in my mind many times when I must take a long walk in a wide open area on an extremely cold and windy day and I ask myself: they were in cozy England and they desperately tried to find a route through the Arctic. WHY, WHY, WHY ???? They had to know that they could freeze to death.
In all the lyrics sources I find the chorus reads "Tracing one warm line through a land so WILD and savage." In this recording he clearly says "WIDE" and savage. I fixed wikipedia to reflect this recording's rendition.
@jaysidell That's because lyrics "sources" are just listening and copying what they think are the words. You are correct, it's WIDE and savage, and really if you think about it, that line makes more sense than using a superfluous word meaning the same thing.
and a long forgotten lonely cairn of stones....reflection of you you and me...rest soundly Stan, we hold you in the hand of our hearts. Our son.

I always thought the line was : through a land so WHITE and savage." That's how I hear it and it avoids the redundancy of both"wild" and "savage".
