Don't forget the USS Ward, the US ship that fired the first shots of the Pacific War. Had the information about the submarine gotten to Admiral Kimmel sooner, the entire Japanese operation would've failed.

During the raid the Japanese destroyed almost all U.S. aircraft on the ground. The few in the air were like 7 P-40's, the B-17's coming in from the mainland, and the USS Enterprise, which wasn't at Pearl but was on it's way back sent like 18 of it's aircraft toward Hawaii like 12 SBD's and 6 F4F Wildcat fighters. Now most of those were shot down but only by friendly antiaircraft fire.

This battle scene is totally wrong. Pure Hollywood B.S. The portable wireless telephone used by a ground crew to talk to a pilot were NOT YET invented in those days ---- soldier-to-pilot communication were not technically possible until recently.

Why not equip the Japanese pilots with GPS and cruise missles to attack Pearl Harbour?  It would be even more dramatic.

If you want a good accurate movie, better watch "Tora! Tora! Tora!".

There were actually several people that managed to take off, and this story is based on 2 of them that managed to down several enemy planes. Of course, only like 35 enemy planes were downed total, so it was a pretty complete victory for the japs.

At first, Japaneese A6M2 in navy markings had white colour, not this green-grey camouflage. And on Pearl Harbor operated P 40 C version, which have 4 50.cal machineguns in wings and 2 30. cal machineguns in nose. This version vas D or later, beacause it have 6 50. cal machineguns in wings. Six P-40's got up but the events by Taylor and Welsh were remembered the most cause they shot down six planes...never flew over pearl harbor itself though. They hit an oncoming wave of dive bombers over the mountains. I believe they were given an air metal for their actions though.

The thing is that Operation Irene was such an incredible event that the movie doesn't require much emphasis on anything; not the combat, not the story.

Pearl Harbor however was so far back to most people that people don't need to (or want to) know everything that happened on that day.

The movie is pretty good but doesn't tell you much apart from the fact that Pearl Harbour happened. In fairness I've never seen a World War 2 movie which does inform you of it's history.

@danamiddleschool: Operation Irene was when US forces in Somalia attempted to capture 'the bad guy's leaders'. Just watch Black Hawk Down, it's probably the closest you'll ever be to combat.(Unless you serve)

Check out the 1970's 20th Century Fox film TORA TORA TORA -- it is as close to a documentary on what happened at Pearl Harbor as there is. This more recent film, unfortunately, seems to have been put together by a bunch of kids who see history through video games. With the budget they had, they really could have done something really neat, and a lot of the special effects are cool, but really missed the mark as far as history and the atmosphere of the time was concerned.

you're absolutely right. Jos Hartnett and Ben Affleck bsolutely suck, and Kate Beckinsale and the other women in this movie are absolutely worthless until the attack hospital scenes. The have modern day ships in the harbor and Battleship Row is a complete mish-mosh. They barely even tell the story of the Arizona, which is the most compelling story of the whole attack. This movie is nothing but specal effects and sub-par acting at best.

The aircraft that are actually flying in this movie WERE MADE for TORA TORA TORA, or similar reconstructions. Pretty much we bombed Japan back in the movie and hit them with only a few planes that lifted off from the carriar. They crash landed in Japan and Danny was killed. The movie ended with a little speech and then showed Danny's kid.
