However, the standard of living for those in employment did not improve in the same way that it had done during the 1920s. With the Nazis controlling the trade unions, wage-rates did not increase with productivity ... so wages were stagnant and even dropped as to value as war times production was going way up, but don't forget all those social programs that were being funded... they got paid in other ways...

This isn't some biblical punishment or environmental crisis (at least not on a major scale) Conservation is important, but with a growing population, how long do we expect this to last? 100 million is dramatically lower than anything we've known, but there's no humane way to go about lowering it to that level. If we were to do something, knowing what we are facing now, we should have done it thousands of years ago. We just have to push forward and face it as best as we can.
However, the Earth is much more independent than we give it credit for. Time is irrelevant to it, and so in a few thousand years, it would be as if we never existed in the first place. Also, in my belief, I don't think we are responsible for much of the changing climate. The Earth goes through it's cycles and we as humans need to realize that's it's not always about us.
A suggestion for all the viewers out there, go and check out the History channels program called "Life After People." It explains how drastically the world would change if suddenly every person disappeared. If any of you has watched "The Road," for the first 50-100 years, I could imagine it being something like that.

I should add that the main weak point in your argument is the notion that a footprint of 20 is a worthy goal for all. I think, in the near future we'll necessarily see a population contraction, but also a significant reduction in the footprint of the wealthy. In other words, people will live in much smaller land areas (building up instead of out). The argument about soil depletion is countered by trends toward sustainable agriculture and waste processing...
In the 1800s, the population was 1 billion. Our technology has advanced tremendously in that time, in all areas. Specifically, important quality of life areas like medical care, dramatic increases in agriculture, etc. I'd say at a minimum, we could sustain 1 billion people very comfortably with proper health care, nutrition and shelter for all. A better question in my opinion is, "How many people do we need?" Nevermind how many we could sustain. Why is 200 million better than 100?

Well, this is just one person's calculations, and I think there are some "variables" that are not being considered. I think what is really needed, is a change in the "average lifestyle". That is, how much the average person consumes and pollutes. However, the standard of living for those in employment did not improve in the same way that it had done during the 1920s. With the Nazis controlling the trade unions, wage-rates did not increase with productivity ... so wages were stagnant and even dropped as to value as war times production was going way up, but don't forget all those social programs that were being funded... they got paid in other ways...

However, the Earth is much more independent than we give it credit for. Time is irrelevant to it, and so in a few thousand years, it would be as if we never existed in the first place. Also, in my belief, I don't think we are responsible for much of the changing climate. The Earth goes through it's cycles and we as humans need to realize that's it's not always about us.

It explains how drastically the world would change if suddenly every person disappeared. If any of you has watched "The Road," for the first 50-100 years, I could imagine it being something like that.

I should add that the main weak point in your argument is the notion that a footprint of 20 is a worthy goal for all. I think, in the near future we'll necessarily see a population contraction, but also a significant reduction in the footprint of the wealthy. In other words, people will live in much smaller land areas (building up instead of out). The argument about soil depletion is countered by trends toward sustainable agriculture and waste processing...

In the 1800s, the population was 1 billion. Our technology has advanced tremendously in that time, in all areas. Specifically, important quality of life areas like medical care, dramatic increases in agriculture, etc. I'd say at a minimum, we could sustain 1 billion people very comfortably with proper health care, nutrition and shelter for all. A better question in my opinion is, "How many people do we need?" Nevermind how many we could sustain. Why is 200 million better than 100?

Its never going to happen, lets face it, humanity is like a virus, we will move to a new area, consume natural resources, this activity will draw people to the area to do the same, then when that area is depleted we would repeat cycle all over again until eventually the earth is on its last leg. At that point the problem will solve itself with the most powerful nations wage war of the remaining resources, it will eventually go nuclear, and most of the population will be atomized. @Kropotkin26 That number is loosely based on a figure from an old world religion, it was one of the commandments that the Babylonian god Enlil gave to the people ordering them to keep the population under a set amount.
As for there not being enough food, as it stands there is plenty but it is not equally available to all, for example how much food do you honestly waste either by it going off or you trowing it away? But if we are not all careful we may have a problem with pop. in the future.

Well, this is just one person's calculations, and I think there are some "variables" that are not being considered. I think what is really needed, is a change in the "average lifestyle". That is, how much the average person consumes and pollutes. Of course, we can't lower consumption and pollution, in our individual lives, until society-at-large ALLOWS us to break free of the "status quo standard of living". THAT is what needs to change.

The idea that more than 6 billion people need to die or be otherwise removed from existence in order to sustain the world is a joke. The only way to do this is to stop multitudes of individuals from breeding altogether.
The solution MUST be new farming techniques which make for abundant food supply (such as hydroponic farming) and increase in the research and development of alternate fuels. When populations reach a higher standard of living, birth rates decrease naturally.
