The undemocratic organization of industry and distributions of power which underlay modern western liberalism (the U.S. included) are the explanation for the antics of mainstream media.

Access and manipulation like this is a much bigger problem if you understand that it's a major factor in reporting larger issues and politics A reporter "embedded" with troops knows these rules and thus the "news" that the American public receives is not always the entire story. He can, of course, report the straight dope, even if it has negative elements, but if it's "too" much so, he'll be "back at the hotel" the next time they "roll out"!
