People have so much hate for Mike Love because he didn't go along with the SMiLE sessions. OK. But fact is, he wrote almost all the upbeat lyrics on what has been determined to be classic BB hits. No he didn't write any of the music, but he went out and toured when all Brian wanted to do is drugs and stay in bed. He might have told Brian not to "fuck with the formula" but it was because Brian, in about a year, tried to change the band from a pop group to an oriental-baroque set.
